The finite element method is a practical tool to compute the response of the irregularly layered soil deposit to the base-rock motions. The method is useful not only in estimating the interaction between the structure and the surrounding soil as a whole and the local behavior of the contacting area in detail, but also in predicting the resulting behavior of the superstructure affected by such soil-structure interactions. However, the computation of finite element analysis is marched in the time domain (TD), while the site response analysis has been carried out mostly in the frequency domain (FD) with equivalent linear analysis. This study is intended to compare the results of the TD and FD analysis with focus on the peak response accelerations and the predominant frequencies, and thus to evaluate the applicability and the validity of the finite element analysis in the site response analysis. The comparison shows that one can obtain the results very close to that of FD analysis, from the finite element analysis by including sufficiently large width of foundation in the model and further by applying partial mode superposition. The finite element analysis turned out to be well agreeing with FD analysis in their computed results of the peak acceleration and the acceleration response spectra, especially at the surface layer.

The AutoForm previously used the membrane element and it accomplished sheet metal forming analysis. The membrane analysis has been widely applied to various sheet metal forming processes because of its saving time effectiveness. However, it's well known that the membrane analysis can not provides correct information for the processes which considerable bending effects. From this time research it tried to compare the formation analysis result which uses the shell element which is applied newly in the AutoForm and actual products. The shell element is compromise method between continuum analysis and membrane analysis. The Finite element method by using shell element is the most economical numerical method. From analysis results, FEA by using shell element can estimate accurately the problems happened in actual auto-body panel.
A new finite element equation is derived by applying quadratic and cubic time integration scheme to the variational formulation in time-integral for the analysis of the transient elastodynamic problems to increase the numerical accuracy and stability. Emphasis is focused on methodology for cubic time integration scheme procedure which are never presented before. In this semidiscrete approximations of the field variables, the time axis is divided equally and quadratic and cubic time variation is assumed in those intervals, and space is approximated by the usual finite element discretization technique. It is found that unconditionally stable numerical results are obtained in case of the cubic time variation. Some numerical examples are given to show the versatility of the presented formulation.
An automated procedure which allows adaptation of spatial and time discretization simultaneously in finite element analysis of linear elastodynamic problems is presented. For dynamic problems having responses dominated by high frequency modes, such as those with impact, explosive, traveling and earthquake loads high gradient stress regions change their locations from time to time. And the time step size may need to vary in order to deal with whole process ranging from transient phase to steady state phase. As the sizes of elements in space vary in different regions, the procedure also permits different time stepping. In such a way, the best performance attainable by the finite element method can be achieved. In this study, we estimate both of the kinetic energy error and stran energy error induced by spatial and time discretization in a consistent manner. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate the performance of the procedure.
This work presents a time-truncation scheme, based on the Lagrange interpolation polynomial, for the solution of the two-dimensional scalar wave problem by the time-domain boundary element method. The aim is to reduce the number of stored matrices, due to the convolution integral performed from the initial time to the current time, and to keep a compromise between computational economy and efficiency and the numerical accuracy. In order to verify the accuracy of the proposed formulation, three examples are presented and discussed at the end of the article.
A finite element program for elastic stress wave propagation is developed in order to investigate the shape of stress field and analysis the magnitude of stress wave intensity at time increment. Accuracy and reliance of the finite element analysis are acquired when the element size is smaller than the product of the stress wave speed and the critical value of increasing time step. In the finite element analysis and theoretical solution, the longitudinal stress wave is propagated to the similar direction of impact load, and the stress wave intensity is expressed in terms of the ratio of propagated area. The direction of shear wave is declined at an angle of 45 degrees compared with longitudinal stress wave and the speed of shear wave is half of the longitudinal stress wave.
The finite element method has been widely used in the analysis of ring rolling. For ring rolling it requires a high computational expense due to the non-steady state material flow characteristics of the process. The high computational expense causes the finite element analysis to be impractical for industrial applications. In the current study, we aim to develop a practical implicit finite element modeling method for ring rolling. This method uses a step-wise steady state assumption and is called the “Stepped method”. The stepped method divides the whole process time of unsteady-state flow model into a finite number of steady-state models. It then solves the process at several specific time steps until convergence is reached. In order to confirm the performance and validity of the newly proposed stepped method, the result from the stepped method were compared to the results from a Lagrangian finite element method and to results from experiments reported in the literature.
In this paper, we introduce a higher order split least-squares characteristic mixed element scheme for Sobolev equations. First, we use a characteristic mixed element method to manipulate both convection term and time derivative term efficiently and obtain the system of equations in the primal unknown and the flux unknown. Second, we define a least-squares minimization problem and a least-squares characteristic mixed element scheme. Finally, we obtain a split least-squares characteristic mixed element scheme for the given problem whose system is uncoupled in the unknowns. We establish the convergence results for the primal unknown and the flux unknown with the second order in a time increment.
