  • We present a new procedure to evaluate the residual life of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel from reversible magnetic permeability. The method is based on the existence of first harmonics in the differential magnetization around the coercive force. The apparatus is based on the detection of the voltage induced in a coil using a lock-in amplifier tuned to the frequency of the exciting coil. Results obtained for the first harmonics and Vickers hardness on aged samples show that the peak interval of reversible permeability and Vickers hardness decrease as aging time increases. The correlation between Vickers hardness and the peak interval of the reversible permeability may be used to evaluate the residual life of 1Cr-lMo-0.25V steel, nondestructively.

  • This paper describes the measurement and location method of partial discharges in high voltage CV cables. Coupling capacitors were used to detect partial discharge signal. Impedance characteristic of the coupling circuit and an amplifier with a high Common Mode Rejection Ratio(CMRR) were studied to improve sensitivity of the circuit. From the calibration experiment, the sensitivity of the partial discharge detection circuit was about 100pC. Also, we confirmed that the location of partial discharges in cables can be estimated by calculation of time difference between the first pulse and the second one reflected from the other end of the cable.

  • The electromagnetic wave scattering from active objects has only recently attracted attention.$^{(1).(3)}$ Theoretical studies have considered normal-incidence plane-wave interactions with active dielectric cylinders with the prediction of large enhancements in the scattered field for bound mode structures. According to the theory of the electromagnetic wave scattering from a dielectric cylinder, the eigenvector solutions are discrete and have both guided (non-radiative) and leaky (radiative) mode solutions. By using an anti-guiding (leaky) structure instead of a guided structure and scattering at oblique incident angles near critical angle, the scattering resonances predicted by theoretical studies were obtained for the first time. A fine-grained scan of the plane-wave incident angle a reveals the existence of discrete scattering resonances. The diameter and real part of the index of refraction determine the resonant conditions and the imaginary part of the refractive index has a threshold value to make mode up for its radiation loss. The cross coupling between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes is clearly detected for both active and passive scattering as theoretically expected. (omitted)

  • Changes in breathing pattern and apnea both can be !he result of sleep disorders. The focus of this paper is to develop methodologies to monitor the breathing pattern and to detect apnea. An accurate recording of the respiratory phase can be carried out with different methods. One of these methods is the use of a thermocouple, which reacts to the variation in air temperature, placed in the nose and mouth of the patient. The K-type thermocouple was used because it has high reliability, thermo-stability, and good corrosion resistance. And also, it has a considerable long time constant that gives a low cut-off frequency, well below the respiratory frequency and thereby causing a large phase difference. The result showed that timing of respiration was accurately obtained with the AD595, amplifier for K-type thermocouple.

  • A PV system inverter test module using RTDS was developed and performance test of a commercial PV inverter was carried out. The developed module consists of one RTDS hardware rack, RTDS software models representing PV array and simple distribution system, and two power amplifiers that was specifically designed for generating power corresponding to signals from RTDS. Performance test results verified effectiveness and reliability of the test module. It is expected that the developed test module may help PV inverter manufacturers improve ana test their systems in the developing stage.

  • In this paper, the 10bit 20MHz pipelined analog-to-digital converter that is able to apply to WLAN system was modeled for ADC design. Each blocks in converter such as sample and hold amplifier(SHA), comparator, multiplyng DAC(MDAC), and digital correction logic(DCL) was modeled. The pipelined ADC with these modeled blocks takes 1/50 less time than the one of simulation using HSPICE.

  • In this paper, we newly introduce a wireless identification system using a solar cell and RF transceivers. The reader sends interrogating signal to a transponder using LED visible light, and the transponder responds to the reader using RF signal. The transponder consists of a solar cell, an amplifier, a microprocessor, and an RF transmitter. The solar cell receives the visible light from the reader and generates current to supply electric power to the other devices in the transponder. At the same time, the solar cell detects interrogating signal in the reader light. The microprocessor senses the interrogating signal and generates a responding signal. The RF transmitter radiates the responding signal to the reader. The transponder is a passive circuit because it operates without external power. In experiments, the maximum read distance between a reader and a transponder was about 1.6 meter.

  • A picosecond transient absorption kinetic spectrometer using a pump-probe method is presented and compared with other methods of picosecond transient absorption measurements. This constructed kinetic spectrometer detects the transient transmittance of sample using a lock-in amplifier as a function of delay time between pump and probe pulses generated from a picosecond mode-locked cw dye laser. Typical transient absorption and ground state bleach recovery kinetic profiles measured with this spectrometer are shown. Excellent kinetic curves of transient absorption or ground state bleach recovery may be obtained at single wavelengths with this spectrometer.

  • This paper presents the full wave analysis of microwave circuits with nonlinear device using the finite difference time domain method. The equivalent current source is used to model nonlinear device and all the electric field components at the nonlinear device are updated by FDTD algorithm. The currents and voltages of nonlinear device are calculated by the state equations and iteration method. To validate the proposed method, the S-parameters of NEC NE72089 MESFET in various conditions are analyzed and the results are compared with those of the ADS. The proposed method is applied to the analysis of a microwave amplifier, which includes NEC NE72089 MESFET. The analysis results obtained by the present method show good agreement with those of the ADS.

  • We investigate the gain dynamics of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers during single- and multi-channel amplification. Power transients due to the changes in the number of channels in the amplifier chain are measured. We successfully suppress power transients by using a fast pump control circuit with<$\mu$s response time.
