  • This study was conducted to investigate and compare species composition, stand structure, and growth pattern for two different sites in which silvopastoral system has been taking place. One site was the pasture area where a number of trees were removed and grasses were planted for cattle grazing, and the other site was the deciduous forest that has been established by ecological succession. The results were as follows: 1. Nine tree species were present equally in the pasture area and the deciduous forest. Of these species, seven tree species were growing in common for two sites. However, the species composition, including density and frequency, was varied by sites. 2. The number of stems per hectare in the pasture area was 71, and that in the deciduous forest was 1,433, having shown the big difference. It is estimated that, considering the growth rate, better grown trees were remained at the time of harvesting in 1996. 3. The growth of diameter, height, and basal area in the pasture area was superior to that in the nearby deciduous forest. In spite of higher values of diameter and height, the timber volume of pasture area per unit area was less than 15% of that in the deciduous forest. 4. Providing sufficient growing space, the pasture area supported higher values of diameter and height. The wider growing space also had influence on the expansion of crown of trees by the result of deliquescent growth pattern. From this point of view, more research would be needed to establish appropriate number of trees for silvopastoral system.

  • This study was executed to offer the basical data needed to the plywood industry as examining on the wood characteristics of veneer species that grow in Korea. According to the aggravation of log import from foreign countries caused by the gradual exhaustion of wood resources in recent years, the study on wood characteristics of veneer species growing in Korea should be carried out preferentially in promotion of the domestic timber utilization and development of it's processing technique for plywood industry. 50 commercial veneer species in this study were selected from 33 genuses, and general macroseopical wood characteristics for them were examined and described by the species. And also keys for the identification based on gross features were briefly prepared and presented by gymnosperm and angiosperm respectively.

  • This study was examined the vascular plants and their characteristics cited in 311 science textbooks of elementary and secondary schools used in the fifth to seventh curriculum. Vascular plants were composed of 129 families, 332 genera, 383 species, 2 subspecies, 47 varieties, 6 forma, and 3 hybrid, totaling 441 taxa. The herbs and trees were consists of 280 taxa (63.5%) and 161 taxa (36.5%), respectively. Native species (241 taxa) were more cited than non-native species (200 taxa). The number of species within a family were high ranked in 35 taxa of Compositae, and 26 taxa of Gramineae. Nine species including endemic genus Hanabusaya Nakai and Abeliophyllum Nakai among the 441 taxa were Korean endemic, and the 25 rare and 12 endangered plants were also included. Based on the list of the species of specially designated plants by the Ministry of Environment, 83 taxa were recorded in the investigated textbooks, and the naturalized plants were 16 taxa. 441 taxa listed consists of 185 taxa (41.9%) of edible plants, 148 taxa (33.5%) of medicinal plants, 139 taxa (31.5%) of ornamental plants, 87 taxa (19.7%) of pasture plants, 34 taxa (7.7%) of timber plants, 13 taxa (2.9%) of miscellaneous plants, 8 taxa (1.8%) of fiber plants, and 3 taxa (0.7%) of industrial plants.

  • Gwangchiryeong, located adjacent to the Korean DMZ, is a mountain pass connecting Yang-Gu, Gangwon-do with In-je. It reaches a height of 800m (2,624ft) and stands on the flank of Mt. Daeam-san, which has an elevation of 1,304m (4,278ft). It is important to survey the flora of Gwangchiryeong in that not only the area encompassing the waterfall and the valley along with dense old-growth forest has various plant species but also it is a way to make out what kind of plant species exist in the DMZ due to the geographical characteristics of Gwangchiryeong adjacent to the Korean DMZ. Therefore, this study was conducted to elucidate the distribution of vascular plants and their value in Gwangchiryeong. The vascular plants that were collected 9 times from April 2014 to September 2015, and consisted of a total of 513 taxa: 88 families, 297 genera, 441 species, 4 subspecies, 62 varieties and 6 forms. Among those observed species, the rare plant species designated by Korea Forest Service were 22 taxa including Hanabusaya asiatica, Paeonia japonica, Saxifraga octopetala, etc. Endemic species were 22 taxa containing Cirsium setidens, Heloniopsis koreana, Salvia chanryoenica, etc. 18 taxa were recorded as naturalized plants and their naturalized rate and urban index were noted as 3.5% and 5.6%. Among the surveyed 513 taxa, edible, medicinal, pasturing, ornamental, timber, dye, fiber and industrial plants were 197 taxa, 154 taxa, 180 taxa, 49 taxa, 24 taxa, 8 taxa, 4 taxa and 3 taxa, respectively.

  • A recent discovery of drywood termites (Cryptotermes domesticus) in a residential facility in Seoul has raised significant concern. This exotic insect species, which can damage timber and wooden buildings, necessitates an immediate investigation of potential infestation. In this study, we assessed the climatic suitability for this termite species using a species distribution modeling approach. Global distribution data and bioclimatic variables were compiled from published sources, and predictive models for climatic suitability were developed using four modeling algorithms. An ensemble prediction was made based on the mean occurrence probability derived from the individual models. The final model suggested that this species could potentially establish itself in tropical coastal regions. While the climatic suitability in South Korea was generally found to be low, a careful investigation is still warranted due to the potential risk of colonization and establishment of this species.

  • In this study, hybrid CLT research and development trends were analyzed to improve the low rolling shear strength of CLT, a large wooden panel used in high-rise wooden buildings. Through this, basic data that can be used in research and development directions for localization of CLT were prepared. As a way to improve the low rolling shear strength, the use of hardwood lamina, the change of the lamina arrangement angle, and the use of structural composite materials are mainly used. Rolling shear strength and shear modulus of hardwood lamina are more than twice as high as softwood lamina. It confirmed that hardwoods can be used and unused species can be used. Rolling shear strength 1.5 times, shear modulus 8.3 times, bending stiffness 4.1 times improved according to the change of the layer arrangement angle, and the CLT strength was confirmed by reducing the layer arrangement angle. Structural wood-based materials have been improved by up to 1.35 times MOR, 1.5 times MOE, and 1.59 times rolling shear strength when used as laminas. Block shear strength between the layer materials was also secured by 7.0 N/mm2, which is the standard for block shear strength. Through the results of previous studies, it was confirmed that the strength performance was improved when a structural wood based materials having a flexural performance of MOE 7.0 GPa and MOR 40.0 MPa or more was used. This was determined based on the strength of layered materials in structural wood-based materials. The optimal method for improving rolling shear strength is judged to be the most advantageous application of structural wood based materials with strength values according to existing specifications. However, additional research is needed on the orientation of CLT lamina arrangement according to the fiber arrangement of structural wood-based materials, and the block shear strength between lamina materials.
