A wireless sensor with data-fusion algorithm for structural tilt measurement

  • Tilt is a key indicator of structural safety. Real-time monitoring of tilt responses helps to evaluate structural condition, enable cost-effective maintenance, and enhance lifetime resilience. This paper presents a prototype wireless sensing system for structural tilt measurement. Long range (LoRa) technology is adopted by the sensing system to offer long-range wireless communication with low power consumption. The sensor integrates a gyroscope and an accelerometer as the sensing module. Although tilt can be estimated from the gyroscope or the accelerometer measurements, these estimates suffer from either drift issue or high noise. To address this challenging issue and obtain more reliable tilt results, two sensor fusion algorithms, the complementary filter and the Kalman filter, are investigated to fully exploit the advantages of both gyroscope and accelerometer measurements. Numerical simulation is carried out to validate and compare the sensor fusion algorithms. Laboratory experiment is conducted on a simply supported beam under moving vehicle load to further investigate the performance of the proposed wireless tilt sensing system.

  • We propose a novel method for object recognition using the smart tag system with a stereo vision on a pan-tilt mechanism. We developed a smart tag which included IRED device. The smart tag is attached onto the object. We also developed a stereo vision system which pans and tilts for the object image to be the centered on each whole image view. A Stereo vision system on the pan-tilt mechanism can map the position of IRED to the robot coordinate system by using pan-tilt angles. And then, to map the size and pose of the object for the robot to coordinate the system, we used a simple model-based vision algorithm. To increase the possibility of tag-based object recognition, we implemented our approach by using as easy and simple techniques as possible.

  • This paper studies the method to extend the sensing range of a fiducial maker using a tilt camera. In the system that uses a fiducial marker to estimate their position on a map, the sensing range of the marker is an important issue. Although there are markers around, a robot with a fixed camera often misses nearby markers in the case that the viewing angle of the camera does not cover the sensing range of the marker. If the robot adjusts the viewing angle of a camera by adjusting the position information of the markers, this problem will be solved. The contribution of this paper is as follows. 1) Structural considerations for the tilting module of cameras attached to robots. 2) Tilting module control method considering the position of a marker and a robot. 3) Finally, verification of the differences in the sensing range of markers between the proposed system and the previous system.

Study of Capacitive Tilt Sensor with Metallic Ball

  • In this paper, a new, simple capacitive tilt sensor with a metallic ball is proposed. The proposed tilt sensor has only two electrodes and a metallic ball, and this design assists in managing the inherent contact problem in measuring tilt angles. Capacitive sensing, compared with other types of tilt sensor, has many advantages such as simplicity, noncontact measurement, long-throw linear displacement, and sub-micron plate spacing. Its design and fabrication process are significantly simpler than previous types of tilt sensors. The dimensions of the prototype tilt sensor are $20mm{\times}20mm$, and the diameter of the polystyrene tube is 5 mm with a tube thickness of 0.15 mm. An analytical study of the prototype capacitive tilt sensor was undertaken, and the experimental results demonstrate the relationship between the tilt angles and measured capacitances compared with the analytical study.

  • The performance characteristics of a satellite imager using a Time Delay and Integration(TDI) Charge Coupled Device (CCD) with fixed integration time is investigated for the variation of satellite altitude and tilt angle. In consequence of the investigation TDI synchronization using tilt imaging is proposed as a solution to compensate geometric performance degradation due to altitude decrease. The tilt angle optimized for the TDI synchronization at decreased altitude is presented. This result can be used for a TDI CCD imager with variable integration time in a certain range as well.

  • In recently years, the research and application for sensor has increased in each field. In this paper, the system which can perceive and detect using 3-axis accelerometer sensor and serial communication is proposed. Also, the user has GUI environment for monitor in real-time. In order to reduce unstable data and error defect of electronic rechargeable liquid tilt sensor used digital 3-axis accelerometer sensor which has AD convertor. Therefore, this system provide exact data and a problem of objects for user more easier.

  • A spherical Earth surface is used fur realistic analysis of the geometrical performance characteristics about the variation of satellite altitude and 2-dimensional line-of-sight(LOS) tilt angle in a satellite imager using Time Delay and Integration(TDI) technique with fixed integration time. In the spherical Earth surface model TDI synchronization using LOS tilt is investigated as a solution to compensate geometric performance degradation due to altitude decrease.   • In order to produce a convenient robot for the aged and the lower limb disabled, it is needed for the research detecting implicit walking intention and controlling robot by a user's intention. In this study, we developed sensor module system to control the walking- assist robot using FSR sensor and tilt sensor, and analyzed the signals being acquired from two sensors. The sensor module system consisted of the assist device control unit, communication unit by wire/wireless, information collection unit, information operation unit, and information processing PC which handles integrated processing of assist device control. The FSR sensors attached user's the palm and the soles of foot are sensing force/pressure signals from these areas and are used for detecting the walking intention and states. The tilt sensor acquires roll and pitch signal from area of vertebrae lumbales and reflects the pose of the upper limb. We could recognize the more detailed user's walking intention such as 'start walking', 'start of right or left foot forward', and 'stop walking' by the combination of FSR and tilt signals can recognize.

  • Database is constructed according to the development of information contents technology. But the construction of database using bio-information has not been developed. because it is difficult to collect bio-information. This paper presents how to construct database about sensing temperature and tilt of cow based on bio-information using RF communication. The system consists of 8bit micro-controller, tilt sensor, temperature sensor and RF module.

  • A spherical earth surface is used for realistic analysis of the geometrical performance characteristics generated by 2-dimensional line-of-sight (LOS) tilt of the satellite imager using the Time Delay and Integration(TDI) technique. A 2-dimensional LOS tilt ever the spherical Earth surface is proposed to compensate geometric performance degradation caused by the satellite altitude decrease below the normal operation altitude. The compensation can be achieved by TDI re-match without degradation of modulation transfer function and with ground sample distance slightly increased. Effective methods of LOS tilt for the compensation are investigated. This study can be useful for mission assurance and flexibility in imager operation.
