Recently new rehabilitation techniques have been proposed with advanced composite materials like carbon fiber, aramid, glass fiber sheet and so forth. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of reinforced concrete columns confined with carbon fiber sheet and evaluate the degree of their strengthening effect. For the test, the specimen size of column is 15cm$\times$15cm$\times$90cm reinforced with 4 number of main bars of 10 mm diameter, tied bars of 6 mm diameter and slenderness ratio 20. Columns were wrapped with carbon fiber sheet along the column length. It is necessary to make some assumption regarding the confinement of carbon fiber sheet to apply to reinforced concrete columns under concentric loads. The strength gain effect of columns confined with carbon fiber sheet could be predicted using the proposed equation.

To analyze the effects of compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio on buckling behavior of columns, 36tied reinforced concrete columns with hinged ends were tested. The 100mm square cross section was used and the amount of eccentricity was 10mm. The compressive strengths of column specimens with slenderness ratios of 15, 30 and 50 were 202, 513 and 752 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The longitudinal steel ratio of columns with bending about a section diagonal and about a principal axis were 2.85%(4-D10). The ratio of ultimate load capacity to that of short column with the same eccentricity was much decreased at high slenderness ratio with increasing the compressive strength of concrete. And the lateral displacement of column at the ultimate load was decreased as the strength was increased. These are due to that at high slenderness ratio, the load capacity and behavior of column are affected by flexural rigidity. And, it was also found that for the same quantity of confining steel and level of axis load, there is little difference between the flexural strength for bending about a section diagonal and for bending about principal axis.
Effect of hyperosmotic pressure on growth of recombinant Chinese hamster 。 vary cells and Erythropoietin (EPO) production was investigated. Cells were cultivated in batch modes at various osmolalities. When the osmolality increased from 314 to 463mOsm/Kg, specific EPO productivity (qp) was increased up to 1.6-fold but cell growth was inhibited. EPO has a complex oligosaccharide structure that plays an important role in biological activity in vivo. To investigate the influence of hypoerosmotic pressure on the glycosylation, structural analysis of oligosaccharide was calTied out. Recombinant human EPO was produced by CHO cells grown under various osmotic pressure and purified from culture supernatants by heparin-sepharose affinity column and immunoaffinity column. N-linked oligosaccharides were released enzymatically and isolated by paper chromatography. The isolated oligosaccharides were labeled with fluorescent dye, 2-aminobenzamide and analyzed with MonoQ anion exchange chromatography and GlycosepN amide chromatography for the assignment of GU (glucose unit) value. Glycan analysis by HPLC showed that neutral (asialo) oligosaccharide was increased slightly with an increase in osmolality. In portion of sialylated glycan, total relative amount of mono- and di-sialyated glycan was increased but that of tri- and tetra-sialylated glycan decreased as osmolality was increased.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of transverse reinforcement in reinforced concrete tied columns subjected to monotonically increasing axial compression. Eighteen large-scale columns(260$\times$260$\times$1200 mm) were tested. Effects of main variables such as the concrete compressive strength, the tie configuration, the transverse reinforcement ratio, the tie spacing, and the spatting of the concrete cover were considered. High-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse reinforcement that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure There is a consistent decrease in deformability of column specimen with increasing concrete strength. Test results were compared with the previous confinement model such as modified Kent-Park, Sheikh-Uzumeri, Mander, and Saatcioglu-Razvi model. The comparison indicates that many previous models for confined concrete overestimate or underestimate the ductility of confined concrete.
A complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) binary image sensor is proposed for low-power and low-noise operation. The proposed binary image sensor has the advantages of reduced power consumption and fixed pattern noise (FPN). A gate/body-tied (GBT) p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (PMOSFET)-type photodetector is used as the proposed CMOS binary image sensor. The GBT PMOSFET-type photodetector has a floating gate that amplifies the photocurrent generated by incident light. Therefore, the sensitivity of the GBT PMOSFET-type photodetector is higher than that of other photodetectors. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor consists of a pixel array with $394(H){\times}250(V)$ pixels, scanners, bias circuits, and column parallel readout circuits for binary image processing. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor was analyzed by simulation. Using the dynamic comparator, a power consumption reduction of approximately 99.7% was achieved, and this performance was verified by the simulation by comparing the results with those of a two-stage comparator. Also, it was confirmed using simulation that the FPN of the proposed CMOS binary image sensor was successfully reduced by use of the double sampling process.
An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the hysteretic behaviors of ultra-high strength concrete tied columns. The purpose of this study is to propose the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement for ultra-high strength concrete tied columns with 100 MPa compressive strength. Nineteen 1/3 scaled columns were fabricated to simulate an 1/2 story of actual structural members with the main variables of axial load ratio, configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. The results show that the deformability of columns are affected by the configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. Especially, it has been found that the behavior of columns are affected by axial load ratio rather than the amounts and the configurations of transverse reinforcement. To improve the ductility behavior of RC column using ultra high strength concrete in a seismic region, We suggested the amount of transverse reinforcement for all data that satisfy the required displacement ductility ratio over 4. It is means that the lateral confining reduction factor (${\lambda}^c$) considering the effective legs, configuration and spacing of transverse reinforcement and axial load ratio was reflected for the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement.
An improved unbonded-type column strengthening procedure using wire rope and T-shaped steel plate units was proposed. Eight strengthened columns and an unstrengthened control column were tested under concentric axial load. The main variables considered were the volume ratio of wire rope and the flange width and configuration of T-shaped steel plates. Axial load capacity and ductility ratio of columns tested were compared with predictions obtained from the equation specified in ACI 318-05 and those of conventionally tied columns tested by Chung et al., respectively. In addition, a mathematical model was proposed to evaluate the complete stress-strain relationship of concrete confined by the wire rope and T-plate units. Test results showed that the axial load capacity and ductility of columns increased with the increase of the volume ratio of wire rope and the flange width of T-plates. In particular, at the same lateral reinforcement index, a much higher ductility ratio was observed in the strengthened columns having the volume ratio of wire rope above 0.0039 than in the tied columns. A mathematical model for the stress-strain relationship of confined concrete using the proposed strengthening procedure is developed. The predicted stress-strain curves were in good agreement with test results.
Multi-storey precast concrete skeletal structures are assembled from individual prefabricated components which are erected on-site using various types of connections. In the current design of these structures, beam-to-column connections are assumed to be pin jointed. Welded plate beam to-column connections have been used in the precast concrete industry for many years. They have many advantages over other jointing methods in component production, quality control, transportation and assembly. However, there is at present limited information concerning their detailed structural behaviour under bending and shear loadings. The experimental work has involved the determination of moment-rotation relationships for semi-rigid precast concrete connections in full scale connection tests. The study reported in this paper was undertaken to clarify the behaviour of such connections under symmetrical vertical loadings. A series of full-scale tests was performed on sample column for which the column geometry and weld arrangements conformed with successful commercial practice. Proprietary hollow core slabs were tied to the beams by tensile reinforcing bars, which also provide the in-plane continuity across the connections. The strength of the connections in the double sided tests was at least 0.84 times the predicted moment of resistance of the composite beam and slab. The secant stiffness of the connections ranged from 0.7 to 3.9 times the flexural stiffness of the attached beam. When the connections were tested without the floor slabs and tie steel, the reduced strength and stiffness were approximately a third and half respectively. This remarkable contribution of the floor strength and stiffness to the flexural capacity of the joint is currently neglected in the design process for precast concrete frames. In general, the double sided connections were found to be more suited to a semi-rigid design approach than the single sided ones. The behaviour of double sided welded plate connection test results are presented in this paper. The behaviour of single sided welded plate connection test results is the subject of another paper.
Deformational characteristics of soils, often expressed in terms of shear modulus and material damping ratios, are important parameters in the design of soil-structure systems subjected to cyclic and dynamic loadings. In this paper, deformational characteristics of dry sand at small to intermediate strains were investigated using resonant column/torsional shear(RC 175) apparatus. Both resonant column(dynamic) and torsional shear (cyclic) tests were performed in a sequential series on the same specimen. With the modification of motion monitoring system, the elastic zone, where the stress strain relationship is independent of loading cycles and strain amplitude, was veri tied and hysteretic damping was found even in this zone. At strains above cyclic threshold, shear modulus increases and damping ratio decreases with increasing number of loading cycles. Moduli and damping ratios of dry sand are independent of loading frequency and values obtained from pseudostatic torsional shear tests are Identical with the values from the dynamic resonant column test, provided the effect of number of loading cycles is considered in the conlparison. Therefore, deformational characteristics determined by RC/TS tests may be applied in both dynamic and static analyses of soil-structure systems.
