The purpose of this experimental study was to evaluate the effect of immediate orthodontic loading on the stability at the bone-implant interface of titanium miniscrews in a rabbit model. Methods: Forty titanium miniscrews (1.6 mm diameter, 8 mm length) were inserted in the tibiae of 10 rabbits. Twenty test group miniscrews were subjected to continuous orthodontic forces of 200g immediately after implantation for a period of 6 weeks. The remaining 20 control group miniscrews were left unloaded for the same follow-up interval. Removal torque values were recorded using a digital torque gauge. An independent t-test was performed. Results: All the miniscrews were stable, and exhibited no mobility or displacement throughout the experimental period. Histologically, miniscrews were well-integrated into bone. No statistically significant differences in removal torque data were found between the loaded test and the unloaded control groups. Conclusions: These findings suggest that titanium miniscrews can be used as anchoring units for orthodontic tooth movement immediately after insertion.
Purpose : The aim of this study is to evaluate a possibility of clinical application for the effects of low intensity ultrasound stimulation (LIUS) in morphological characteristics (i.e., structure, bone mineral density) of bone on osteoporotic fracturesprevention. Materials and Methods : Eight virgin 14-week-old ICR mice (approximate weight 25g) were used and ovariectomized (OVX) to induce osteoporosis. Right tibia (US) for each mouse served as the LIUS (1.5MHz frequency, 1.0 kHz pulse repetition on frequency, $30mW/cm^2$ intensity, $200{\mu}s$ pulse length, and stimulation for 20 minutes a day and 5 days a week over a 6-week period). Left tibia (CON) for each mouse served as the non-stimulated controls. Structural parameters and bone mineral density ($g/cm^3$) on trabecular bone of tibiae were calculated and measured from images derived in-vivo micro computed tomography (micro-CT) at 0 week and after 6weeks. Results : The BV/TV and Tb.N in US group were significantly bigger than those in CON group. The Tb.Pf in US group, moreover, was significantly smaller than that in CON group (p<0.05).For the others structural parameters and BMD, however, there were no significant difference between US group and CON group (p>0.05). Conclusion : The LIUS might prevent bone loss and keep bone connectivity in osteoporotic bones. Therefore, the LIUS might prevent effectively the osteoporotic fractures in clinics.

Purpose: Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been shown to alter the properties of the bone and impair bone healing around a titanium implant. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), which has been known to stimulate the bone healing, improve the osseointegration of the titanium implant in tibia of DM-induced rats. Methods: 16 rats were received streptozotocin (60 mg/kg) for inducing diabetes. A total number of 32 titanium implants were placed bilaterally into both tibiae of these rats. The right tibia of each rat received LIPUS application (10 min/day) during 7 days post-operation, while the left side received no treatment. The study was carried on for six weeks and the rats were sacrificed at 1, 2, 4, and 6 weaks postoperatively (4 rats for each week) for histomorphometric and histologic analysis. Bone-implant contact and bone area were measured. Comparisons between the groups were made using statistical analysis on histomorphometric analysis. Results: The histomorphometry parameters showed that the bone-implant contact and the bone area values have decreased in the late osseointegration periods (4, 6 weeks) compared to the early osseointegration periods (1, 2 weeks) in both two groups. The bone-implant contact values of the LIPUS group were somewhat higher than those of controls at 1, 2 weeks, but the difference was not statistically significant. The bone area values of the LIPUS group were also higher than those of controls at 1, 2 weeks, but the difference was not statistically significant as well. Conclusion: Results of this study indicate that LIPUS may have positive effects on early osseointegration but could not improve the long term stability of dental implants.
A large increase in the use of thin film coating of hydroxyapatite(HA) in implant dentistry is driven by the desire to take advantage of the excellent biocompatibility and high strength of HA coating. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of HA-coated implants by ion Beam Assisted Deposition(IBAD) method in comparison to the sand-blasted and machined surfaces. Osteoblast culture test, removal torque test and histomorphometric analysis were performed and the following results obtained; 1. Examination of the osteoblast cultures displayed no difference in the secretion of alkaline phosphatase between the various specimen, but IBAD with pure HA specimen showed low alkaline phosphatase secretion(p<0.05). 2. Removal torque tests showed HA-coated implants by IBAD method to be similar in high value to the implants with sand-blasted surface than the implants with machined surface. And the ovariectomized group showed low mechanical test value than the normal group(p<0.05). 3. Histomorphometrical comparisons were performed on undecalcified ground sections. HA-coated implants by IBAD method demonstrated the highest mean bone-to-metal contact ratio on all threads and 3-best consecutive threads, and the implants with sand-blasted surface and implants with machined surface was in the next consecutive order(p<0.05). HA-coated implants showed slightly higher bone-to- metal contact ratio than sand-blasted implants, but no statistically significant difference was obtained between the two materials. The ovariectomized group showed lower value of bone-to-metal contact ratio than the normal group, but no statistically significant difference was obtained between the two groups. 4. Evaluation of bone volume on all threads and 3-best consecutive threads showed no statistically significant difference among the different surface treatment groups, but showed lower bone volume in ovariectomized group than in the normal group(p<0.05). According tn these results, thin film coated implants with HA showed high bone contact ratio, bone volume and removal torque strength in the short term, but long term observation is needed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the titanium implant soaked in saline after RBM surface treatment on the initial osseointegration by comparing the removal torque and the surface analysis compared to the titanium implant with only RBM surface treatment. Materials and methods: The control group was RBM surface treated implants (RBM), and the test group was implants soaked in saline for 2 weeks after RBM surface treatment (RBM+Sal). The control and test group implants were placed in the left and right tibiae of 10 rabbits, respectively, and at the same time, the insertion torque (ITQ) was measured. After 10 days, the removal torque (RTQ) was measured by exposing the implant site. FE-SEM, EDS, Surface roughness and Raman spectroscopy were performed for the surface analysis of the new implant specimens used in the experiments. Results: There was no significant difference in insertion torque and removal torque between RBM surface treated titanium implants and saline-soaked titanium implants after RBM surface treatment. Conclusion: Saline soaking after RBM surface treatment of titanium implants did not positively affect the initial osseointegration as compared to titanium implants with only RBM surface treatment.
Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of plant phytase (Phytazyme$^{(R)}$) in corn-soybean meal based diets on utilization of phytase-bound phosphorus in laying hens and evaluate nitrogen(N) digestibility and phosphorus(P) availability in breeders. In the experiment one, three levels of the Phytazyme$^{(R)}$(0.05, 0.1, and 0.2% of diet) were added to diets containing a half of control TCP level(0.96%) for 4 wks. Feed consumption, egg production rate, egg weight and eggshell quality were recorded weekly. At the end of experiment, 8 birds per treatment were sacrificed, liver weight were weighed and right tibiae were removed for determination of P content. The second experiment was conducted to evaluate the P availability and nitrogen digestibility in breeders fed same diets for 2 wks. Feed and excreta were collected to determine the P and N contents for the last three days of experiment two. Addition of Phytazyme$^{(R)}$ resulted in no effects on feed intake, egg product rate, egg weight and egg shell quality. P excretion decreased and its availability enhanced as phytase supplementation increased in diets. Dietary supplementation of Phytazyme$^{(R)}$ above 0.1% level in corn-soybean meal based diets did not have an adverse effect on production and decreased level of phosphorus in excreta.

Platelet-rich plasma(PRP) has been known to increase the rate and degree of bone formation by virtue of growth factors in concentrated platelets. Although its great healing effect on bone defect or pre-implantation site preparation in conjunction with bone substitute has been reported, the effect associated with implant is unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of PRP on rapid osseointegration of endosseous dental implants in the rabbit tibiae. Twenty two adult female New Zealand white rabbits, weighing approximately 2.7-3.3kg, were used for this study. Twelve of the 22 animals were used for histomorphometric analysis and ten of the 22 were for removal torque test. Each animal received two implants in each tibia (two treated with PRP and two as control) and was given fluorochrome intramuscularly. For histomorphometric analysis, rabbits were divided into four groups according to the healing period. At 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks postoperatively, each three animals were sacrificed serially and the amount and rate of bone formation around dental implant were examined on the undecalcified sections under fluorescent microscope, polarized microscope and light microscope connected to a personal computer equipped with image analysis system. For removal torque test, rabbits were divided into two groups and removal torque tests were performed at 4 weeks, 10 weeks after implant placement. In total, 88 screw shaped, commercially pure titanium implants (Neoplant, Neobiotech, Seoul, Korea) were used in this study. Labeling pattern reflected differences of two groups in bone formation rate at each period. Histomorphometrically, PRP group showed significantly higher bone volume within threads compared to control group at 2 weeks ($70.30{\pm}4.96%$ vs. $50.68{\pm}6.33%$; P < .01) and 4 weeks ($82.59{\pm}5.94%$ vs. $72.94{\pm}4.57%$; P < .05 ). PRP group at 1, 2 and 4 weeks revealed similar degree of bone volume formation comparable to control group at 2, 4 and 8 weeks, respectively. On the other hand, while PRP group showed higher bone-implant contact ($47.37{\pm}8.09%$) than control group ($33.16{\pm}13.47%$) at 2 weeks, there were no significant differences between PRP group and control group for any experimental period. Removal torque values also showed no significant differences between PRP group and control group at any experimental period (P > .05). These findings imply that PRP could induce rapid, more bone formation around implant during early healing period and get faster secondary stability for reducing healing period, though it has not induced bone maturation enough to resist functional loading.
An 8 week feeding trial was conducted with 864 ISA Brown laying hens, 48 weeks old, to determine if microbial phytase $(Natuphos^{(R)})$ supplementation can reduce non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) level in laying diets. The experiment consisted of four dietary treatments: T1, control diet with 0.26% NPP (0.55% total P) wand no supplementary phytase; T2, 0.21% NPP (0.50% total P) diet with 250 U of phytase/kg of diet; T3, 0.16% NPP (0.45% total P) diet with 250 U of phytase/kg of diet; and T4, 0.11% NPP (0.40% total P) diet with 250 U of phytase/kg of diet. T3 showed the highest egg production and egg weight and the lowest feed conversion while T4 gave the lowest egg production and the highest feed conversion and mortality. Daily feed consumption ranged from 130.4 g (T4) to 132.7 g (T2). T1 and T2 were not significantly different in the production parameters. Eggshell strength, egg specific gravity, and eggshell thickness were not significantly different among treatments. However, broken egg ratio was significantly lower in T2 and T4 than in T1. Retentions of Ca, P, Mg, and Cu were greater in phytase supplemented treatments (T2, T3, and T4) than the control (T1), and those in T3 and T4 were greater than in T2. Excretions of P in phytase supplemented treatments (T2, T3, and T4) were significantly (p<0.05) smaller than in T1 but excretions of N were not significantly different among the treatments. Contents of ash in tibiae were not significantly affected by treatments, but contents of Ca, P, Mg, and Zn was increased and that of Cu decreased by phytase supplementation. It is concluded that the NPP concentration in the diet of Brown layers consuming about 130 g/d of feed can be safely lowered from 0.26% (0.55% total P) to 0.16% (0.45% total P). The excretion of P was reduced by the inclusion of 250 U phytase/kg of diet.
Objective: Broilers show clear preference towards red color light (RL). However setting of an optimum light intensity is difficult since dim intensities that favor growth reduce welfare. This experiment was conducted to test the most effective RL intensity regimen (Dim [5 lux; DI] vs high [320 lux; HI]) in combination applied at different growth stages that favors for both performance and welfare. Methods: Complete randomize design was adopted with 6 replicates. Treatments were; T1 = early DI (8-21 d)+latter HI (22-35 d); T2 = early DI (8-28 d)+latter HI (29-35 d), T3 = early HI (8-21 d)+latter DI (22-35 d), T4 = early HI (8-28 d)+latter DI (29-35 d) and T5 = control (white light; WT) (8-35 d) at medium intensity (20 lux). Body weight (BW), weight gain (WG), water/feed intake and ratio, feed conversion ratios (FCR) were assessed. Common behaviours (15) were recorded by scan sampling method. Lameness, foot pad dermatitis, breast blisters, hock burning damage were assessed as welfare parameters. Fear reactions were tested using Tonic Immobility Test. Ocular and carcass evaluations were done. Meat and tibiae were analyzed for fat and bone ash respectively. Results: On 35 d, the highest BW ($2,155.72{\pm}176g$), WG ($1,967.78{\pm}174g$) were recorded by T2 compared to WT ($BW_{WT}=1,878.22{\pm}155$, $WG_{WT}=1,691.83{\pm}160$). But, application of RL, either DI, or HI during early/latter stage had no significant effect on FCR. Under HI, birds showed much higher active behaviours. DI encourages eating. Though LI changed from DI to HI, same trend could be seen even under HI. The highest leg strength ($218.5{\pm}120s$) was recorded by T2. The lowest leg strength ($64.58{\pm}33s$) and the highest ocular weight ($2.48{\pm}1g$) were recorded by T1. Significantly (p<0.05) the highest skin weight ($162.17{\pm}6g$) but the lowest fat% in meat ($13.03%{\pm}5%$) was recorded by T2. Conclusion: Early exposure to DI-RL up to 28 days followed by exposure to HI-RL is the most favorable lighting regimen for optimizing production, better welfare of broilers and improving health benefits of meat.
The therapeutic effect of safflower seed powder on experimental osteoporosis in the rat induced by ovariectomy was evaluated. Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats were ovariectomized at the age of 12 weeks. Seven weeks postovariectomy, rats were divided into two groups: control and safflower seed powder treated group. Five animals from each group were sacrificed at the following time points: 1, 3, and 5 weeks. Scanning electron microscopic observation and morphometric analysis of the tibiae epiphysis showed that the administration of safflower seed powder significantly prevented reduction of cortical bone width and bone volume compared with the control group. In conclusion, safflower seed powder contains something that prevent bone loss due to estrogen deficiency, and was effective in preventing the osteoporotic decrease of bone mass.
