  • This paper investigates the static buckling behaviours of Functionally Gradient Polymeric Material (FGPM) shells in the form of hemispherical segment. A new FGPM model based on experimental was considered to investigate the buckling problem of thin-walled spherical shells loaded by the external pressure. The spherical shells were formed by FGPM which was produced adding the two types of graphite powders into epoxy resin. The graphite powders were added to the epoxy resin as volume of 3, 6, 9, and 12%. Halpin-Tsai and Paul models were used to determine the elastic moduli of the parts of FGPM. The detailed static buckling analyses were performed by using finite element method. The influences of the types and volume of graphite powders on the buckling behaviour of the FGPM structures were investigated. The buckling loads of hemispherical FGPM shells based on Halpin-Tsai and Paul models were compared with those determined from the analytical solution of non-graphite condition existing for homogeneous material model. The comparisons between these material models showed that Paul model was overestimated. Besides, the critical buckling loads were predicted. The higher critical buckling loads were estimated for the PV60/65 graphite powder due to the compatible of the PV60/65 graphite powder with resin.

  • In the present study, the elasto-plastic analysis of prismatic plate structures subjected to pure bending is carried out using the finite strip method. The end cross-sections of the structure are assumed to remain plane during deformation, and the compatibility along corner lines is ensured by choosing proper displacement functions. The effects of both the initial geometrical imperfections and residual stresses due to fabrication are included in the combined geometrically and materially nonlinear simulation. The von-Mises yield criterion and the Prandtl-Reuss flow theory of plasticity are applied in modelling the elasto-plastic behavior of material. Newton-Raphson iterations are carried out as the rotation of the end cross sections of the structure is increased step by step. The parameter representing the overall axial strain of structure is adjusted constantly during the iteration process in order to eliminate the resulting overall axial force on any cross-section of the structure in correspondence with the assumption of zero axial force in pure bending. Several numerical examples are presented to validate the present method and to investigate the effects of some material and geometrical parameters.

  • In this paper, buckling conditions and retrofitting of cylindrical steel water storage tanks with different roof types and wall thicknesses were investigated by using finite element method. Four roof types of cylindrical steel tanks which are open-top, flat-closed, conical-closed and torispherical-closed and three wall thicknesses of 4, 6 and 8 mm were considered in FE modeling of cylindrical steel tanks. The roof shapes significantly affect load distribution on the tank shell under the seismic action. Composite FRP materials are widely used for winding thin-walled cylindrical steel structures. The retrofitting efficiency of cylindrical steel water tank is tested under the seismic loading with the externally bonded CFRP laminates. In retrofitting of cylindrical steel tank, the CFRP composite material coating method was used to improve of seismic performance of cylindrical steel tanks. ANSYS software was used to analyze the cylindrical steel tanks and maximum equivalent (von-Mises) and directional deformation were obtained. Equivalent (von-Mises) stresses significantly decreased due to the coating of the tank shell with FRP composite material. In thin-walled steel structures, excessive stress causes buckling and deformations. Therefore, retrofitting led to decrease in stress, reductions in directional and buckling deformation of the open-top, flat-closed, conical-closed and torispherical-closed tanks.

  • In this paper, a thoery for the static analysis of large plastic deformations of 3-dimentional frames, aiming at application to the collapse analysis of ship structures, is presented. In the frame analysis formulation, effects of shear deformations are included. A plastic hinge is inserted into the field of a beam and post-failure deformation of the plastic hinge is characterized by finite rotations and extensions. In order to model deep web frames of ship's structures into a framed structures, collapse of thin-walled plate girders is investigated. The proposed analysis method is applied to several ship structural models in the references.

  • Extruded Profiles of Aluminum alloys have been widely used as parts and frames in mechanical and construction structures. Nowadays, mechanical processing of extruded Al alloy profiles is often employed for various industrial applications. Especially, the bending process is more and more applied and the process is greatly influenced by the distributed mechanical properties in the extruded profiles. Due to large reduction of area or extrusion ratio in ordinary production of extruded profiles, anisotropy is naturally induced by large severe deformation during the extrusion process. Therefore, the anisotropy properties play a great role in the bending process, as a post processing of extruded profiles and errors will be involved when the extruded profiles are treated as isotropic material, ignoring the induced anisotropy in the thin-walled extruded product. In the present work, the anisotropic material change is simulated, as a simplified method, employing Barlats six-component yield criterion in the rigid-plastic finite element method. Finite element computations are carried out for extrusion of a thin-walled part.

  • The long-term behaviour of simply supported composite steel-concrete beams with deformable connectors subjected to skew bending and torsion is presented. The problem is dealt with by recurring to the displacement method, assuming the bending and torsional curvatures and the longitudinal deformations of each sectional part as unknowns and obtaining a system of differential and integro-differential equations. Some solving methods are presented, in order to obtain exact and approximate solutions and evaluate the precision of the approximate ones. A case study is then presented. For the sake of clearness, the responses of the composite beam under loads applied in different directions are studied separately, in order to correctly evaluate the effects of each load condition.

  • In this paper, a new thin-walled beam finite elcment is developed to overmome the difficulties in the analysis of real structures by existing beam elements. The element is formulated by extending Benscoter's assumption and also by adopting the concept of the curvature-based element. It is applicable to the analysis of the beams with arbitrary cross-sectional shapes. The results obtained show that the element is locking-free and the accuracy of the finite element solutions is remarkably improved.
