Actual buckling curves are always characterised by the erosion of ideal buckling curves. In case of compact sections this erosion is due to the imperfections, while for thin-walled members, a supplementary erosion is induced by the phenomenon of coupled instabilities. The ECBL approach- Erosion of Critical Bifurcation Load - represents a practical and convenient tool to characterise the instability behaviour of thin-walled members. The present state-of-art paper describes the theoretical background of this method and the applications to cold-formed steel sections in compression and bending. Special attention is paid to the evaluation methods of erosion coefficient and to their validation. The ECBL approach can be also used to the plastic-elastic interactive buckling of thin-walled members, and the paper provides significant results on this line.
This paper presents the experimental and numerical study on the distribution of transverse and longitudinal residual stresses in cold-formed thick-walled structural steel rectangular hollow sections manufactured by indirect technique. Hole-drilling method is employed to measure the magnitude of the transverse and longitudinal surface residual stress distribution, and the effects of the residual stresses are evaluated qualitatively by sectioning method. It is shown that compared to normal cold-formed thin-walled structural hollow sections (SHS), the cold-formed thick-walled SHS has similar level of residual stress in the flat area but higher residual stresses in the corner and welding areas. Both the transverse and longitudinal residual stresses tend to open the section. In order to predict the surface residual stresses in the corners of the cold-formed thick-walled SHS, an analytical model is developed. 2D finite element simulation of the cold bending process is conducted to validate the analytical approach. It is shown that in analyzing bending for thick-walled sections, shifting of neutral axis must be considered, since it would lead to nonlinear and non-symmetrical distribution of stresses through the thickness. This phenomenon leads to the fact that cold-formed thick-walled SHSs has different distribution and magnitude of the residual stresses from the cold-formed thin-walled SHSs.
Thin walled steel bridge-piers/columns are vulnerable to damage, when subjected to earthquake excitations. Local buckling, global buckling or interaction between local and global buckling usually is the cause of this damage, which results in significant strength reduction of the member. In this study new innovative design concepts, "thin-walled corrugated steel columns" and "thin-walled cellular steel columns" are presented, which allow the column to undergo large plastic deformations without significant strength reduction; hence dissipate energy under cyclic loading. It is shown that, compared with the conventional designs, circular and stiffened box sections, these new innovative concepts might results in cost-effective designs, with improved buckling and ductility properties. Using a finite element model, that takes the non-linear material properties into consideration, it is shown that the corrugations will act like longitudinal stiffeners that are supporting each other, thus improving the buckling behavior and allowing for reduction of the overall wall thickness of the column.
In this paper a computer program is developed for the determination of geometrical and material properties of composite thin-walled beams with arbitrary open cross-section and any arbitrary laminate stacking sequence. Theory of thin-walled composite beams is based on assumptions consistent with the Vlasov's beam theory and classical lamination theory. The program is written in Fortran 77. Some numerical examples are given, with complete information about input and output.

Inelastic buckling stress of Welded Thin-Walled Steel Sections was investigated by - using Spline Finite Strip Method. Several types of membrane residual stress and nonlinear stress-strain relationship were considered to produce reasonable fits to test results. A simple formula for the inelastic local buckling stress of welded sections was also proposed and compared with Korean Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges.
The purpose of this paper is to provide and verify an analytical method, based on the spline finite strip method, which can be used to investigate the buckling mode and stress of thin-walled steel sections. Geometric imperfection and initial stress of plates and plate assemblies, which are resulted from various preloadings and may cause prebuckling deformations before buckling, are included in the analysis. Material nonlinearity and residual stress are also considered. It can be applied to sections with simple or non-simple boundary conditions and arbitrary loading. The method has been applied to investigate the buckling behavior of plates and plate assemblies which are subjected to compression with initial imperfections and residual stresses.

In literature for thin-walled sections with L, [, +, I, and ${\Box}$- shapes the approximate torsion equations for stiffness are used which were proposed by Bach (Hsu 1984), p.30. New formulae for torsional stiffness of bars with L, [, +, I, and ${\Box}$ cross section valid not only for thin-walled sections are presented in this paper. These formulae are obtained by appropriate polynomial approximation of stiffness results obtained by means of method of fundamental solutions. On the base of obtained results the validity of Bach's formulae are verified when cross section is not thin-walled.

An efficient algorithm automatically determining cross sectional properties of thin-walled beams is developed using the minimum information about geometry of the cross section. This scheme is applied to automatic calculation of normal and shear stress distribution corresponding to stress resultants as well as sectional constants for complex open and closed thin-walled sections. Numerical examples evaluating section constants and stress distributions is presented and compared with the available reference's results.
This study focuses on the experimental evaluation of the flexural-torsional performance of high strength thin-walled composite members. A series of tests on composite members with various sectional aspect ratios subjected to eccentric cyclic loads were conducted. Test results show that the composite member's torsional strength could be approximated using a series of linear segments and evaluated using the superposition of the component steel and reinforced concrete responses. It is also validated from the tests that the strength deterioration of members subjected to combined loads is closely related to the aspect ratios of the sections. An interaction expression between the bending and torsion for high strength thin-walled composite members is proposed for engineering practice references.

In order to trace the lateral-torsional post-bucking behaviors of thin-walled space frames with non-symmetric cross sections, a geometrically non-linear finite element formulation is presented by applying incremental equilibrium equations based on the updated Lagrangian formulation and introducing Vlasov's assumption. The improved displacement field for non-symmetric thin-walled cross sections is introduced based on inclusion of second order terms of finite rotations, and the potential energy corresponding to the semitangential rotations and moments is consistently derived. For finite element analysis, tangent stiffness matrices of thin-walled space frame element are derived by using the Hermition polynomials as shape functions. A co-rotational formulation in order to evaluate the unbalanced loads is presented by separating the rigid body rotations and pure deformations from incremental displacements and evaluating the updated direction cosines and incremental member forces.
