Derivation procedures of exact dynamic stiffness matrices of thin-walled straight beams subjected to eccentrically axial forces are rigorously presented for the spatial free vibration analysis. An exact dynamic stiffness matrix is established from governing equations for a uniform beam element with nonsymmetric thin-walled cross section. First this numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem by introducing 14 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Thus, the displacement functions of displacement parameters are exactly derived and finally exact stiffness matrices are determined using element force-displacement relationships. The natural frequencies of nonsymmetric thin-walled straight beams are evaluated and compared with analytical solutions or results by thin-walled beam element using the cubic Hermitian polynomials and ABAQU's shell elements in order to demonstrate the validity of this study.
Hydroforming of a non-axisymmetric thin-walled tubular component with variable cross sections was analyzed. In order to solve the sealing problem which occurred due to the thin and non-axisymmetric shape, the use of a lead patch on the punch, which had been successful in hydroforming of thin tubes, was evaluated. A lead patch was attached to the punch to solve the sealing problem, which was caused by the stress gradient in the non-axisymmetric shape. FEM and experiments were also performed to analyze these sealing problems associated with the punch shape and non-axisymmetric shape. Finally, the lead patch was attached at tube surface where intensive local strain concentration would occur to enhance the hydroformability. These methods were successfully used to fabricate non-axisymmetric thin-walled tubular component with variable cross sections that had previously failed during traditional hydroforming.

Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) has excellent mechanical properties and high specific strength; therefore, it is widely used in aerospace, automobile, defense, engine parts, and bio fields. Particularly in the aerospace field, as it has a low specific gravity and rigidity, it is used for the purpose of increasing energy efficiency through weight reduction of parts, and most have a thin-walled structure. However, it is extremely difficult to machine thin-walled shapes owing to vibration and deformation. In the case of thin-walled structures, the cutting forces and vibrations rapidly increase depending on the cutting conditions, significantly affecting the surface integrity and tool life. In this study, machining experiments on thin-wall milling of a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) were conducted for each experimental condition with different axial depths of cut, radial depth of cut, and machining sequence. The machining characteristics were analyzed, and an effective machining method was derived by a comprehensive analysis of the machined surface conditions and cutting signals.

The thick open section composite beams are used extensively as load carrying members and stiffeners of structural elements. However, most of studies on thick composite beams are limited only to closed section beams. In this study, an open cross-section thick-walled composite beam model which includes coupled stiffness, transverse shear, and warping effects is suggested and the deflections associated with the thick-walled composite beams and thin-walled composite beams are obtained and compared with the finite element analysis results. The correlation between thin and thick walled composite beam was achieved for two different layup configurations which are the circumferentially asymmetric stiffness (CAS) and circumferentially uniform stiffness (CUS) beams.

Thin-walled die casting of aluminum notebook computer housing with less than 1mm thickness was investigated by using computational solidification simulation and actual casting experiment. Three different types of gate design, finger, tangential and split type, were used and the results showed that sound thin-walled die casting was possible with tangential and split type gating design because those gates allowed aluminum melt flowed into the thin-wall cavity uniformly and split type gating system was preferable gating design than tangential type at the point of view of soundness of casting and distortion generated after solidification. Also, solidification simulation agreed well with the actual die-casting and the casting showed no casting defect and distortion.
This paper presents the experimental and numerical study on the distribution of transverse and longitudinal residual stresses in cold-formed thick-walled structural steel rectangular hollow sections manufactured by indirect technique. Hole-drilling method is employed to measure the magnitude of the transverse and longitudinal surface residual stress distribution, and the effects of the residual stresses are evaluated qualitatively by sectioning method. It is shown that compared to normal cold-formed thin-walled structural hollow sections (SHS), the cold-formed thick-walled SHS has similar level of residual stress in the flat area but higher residual stresses in the corner and welding areas. Both the transverse and longitudinal residual stresses tend to open the section. In order to predict the surface residual stresses in the corners of the cold-formed thick-walled SHS, an analytical model is developed. 2D finite element simulation of the cold bending process is conducted to validate the analytical approach. It is shown that in analyzing bending for thick-walled sections, shifting of neutral axis must be considered, since it would lead to nonlinear and non-symmetrical distribution of stresses through the thickness. This phenomenon leads to the fact that cold-formed thick-walled SHSs has different distribution and magnitude of the residual stresses from the cold-formed thin-walled SHSs.
An experiment was conducted to determine whether there were any apparent differences in the microbial population, colonization pattern and digestion of guinea grass in situ, between cattle and swamp buffalo. Percentage losses in dry matter (DM), nitrogen (N) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) of guinea grass were significantly (p<0.01) higher when incubated in the rumen of buffalo than in cattle. Buffalo also showed significantly (p<0.05) faster degradation rates than cattle for each grass component (DM, N, DNF). Light microscopy and SEM examination of the incubated grass materials showed that there were no apparent differences in the pattern of bacterial and fungal invasion and colonization of the grass materials between cattle and buffalo. Attachment of bacteria and fungal zoospores on the grass fragments occurred at 15 min after rumen incubation. After 3 h of rumen incubation, dense population of bacteria was observed in the thin-walled mesophyll and parenchyma tissues, whereas root-like fungal rhizoids were observed in both thin-walled and thick-walled cells. By 6 h, eroded zones were apparent in the thin-walled tissues and in thick-walled tissues with profuse rhizoids. After 24. 48 and 72 h of rumen incubation, most thin-walled tissues were degraded leaving mostly the thick-walled tissues. The predominant bacteria were the curved rods resembling Butyrivibrio sp., the thick rods resembling Fibrobacter sp., the diplococcoids resumbling Ruminococcus sp. And spirochetes. Fungi were predominantly those with spherical or oval sporangia. Fusiform sporangia with acuminate apices which resembled Ruminomyces sp. Were of lesser occurrence. Few protozoa were found on the grass fragments at all incubation times.

In this paper, the porous metal PM-35 is proposed as the filler material of filled thin-walled tubes (FTTs), and a series of experimental study is conducted to investigate the dynamic behavior and energy absorption performance of PM-35 filled thin-walled tubes under impact loading. Firstly, cylinder solid specimens of PM-35 steel are tested to investigate the impact mechanical behavior by using the Split Hopkinson pressure bar set (SHP); Secondly, the filled thin-walled tube specimens with different geometric parameters are designed and tested to investigate the feasibility of PM-35 steel applied in FTTs by the orthogonal test. According to the results of this research, it is concluded that PM-35 steel is with the excellent characteristics of high energy absorption capacity and low yield strength, which make it a potential filler material for FTTs. The micron-sizes pore structure of PM-35 is the main reason for the macroscopic mechanical behavior of PM-35 steel under impact loading, which makes the material to exhibit greater deformation when subjected to external forces and obviously improve the toughness of the material. In addition, PM-35 steel core-filled thin-wall tube has excellent energy absorption ability under high-speed impact, which shows great application potential in the anti-collision structure facilities of high-speed railway and maglev train. The parameter V0 is most sensitive to the energy absorption of FTT specimens under impact loading, and the sensitivity order of different variations to the energy absorption is loading speed V0>D/t>D/L. The loading efficiency of the FTT is affected by its different geometry, which is mainly determined by the sleeve material and the filling material, which are not sensitive to changes in loading speed V0, D/t and D/L parameters.
