In this paper, we estimated the degree of pipe thinning by using two accelerometers. It uses measured velocity of flexural wave traveling along the pipes. If the thickness of the wall decreases because of pipe thinning, flexural stiffness of the pipes decreases and accordingly, traveling velocity of flexural wave decreases. Thus, if we install two vibration sensors outside of the pipes and measures traveling velocity of flexural waves regularly, we can estimate and monitor the degree of pipe thinning quickly. In order to test the method we experimented with pipes, and get the result that group velocity varies according to the degree of pipe thinning. It verified this method can be used to monitor the pipe thinning.

The thickness of pipe can be locally reduced during operation due to wall thinning. Due to its significance on structural integrity, many non-destructive detecting techniques and assessment methods are available. In this study, the elastic bending compliance of local wall-thinned pipe is presented in terms of the wall thinning geometry: wall thinning depth, circumferential angle and longitudinal length. Elastic finite element (FE) analysis further shows that the presented equation can be used for any wall thinning shape. The proposed solution differs from FE results by less than 6% for all cases analyzed. The bending compliance increases linearly with increasing longitudinal thinning length and non-linearly with increasing thinning angle and depth.

The wall thickness of the Ti-6Al-4V Large-Diameter Seamless Tube, which is supposed to be a very important parameter in a system design, was measured during $360^{\circ}$ cold bending processes. The factors or processes affecting the wall thickness include 1) primary bending, 2)secondary or finishing step of the $360^{\circ}$ bending, 3)cleaning processes in CERO TRUTM(CT)process. But thinning effects of the wall thickness during the cleaning processes are negligible compared to those during the formers. The variations in the percentages of the change in wall thickness were found to be from -14% to +16%.

Local wall thinning in pipelines affects the structural integrity of industries, such as nuclear power plants (NPPs). In the present study, a development of pulsed eddy current (PEC) technology that detects the wall thinning of pipelines covered with insulation is reviewed. The methods and experimental results, which have two kinds of probe with a single and double core, were compared. For this purpose, the single and double core probes having one and two excitation coils have been devised, and the differential probe with two Hall sensors has been fabricated to measure the wall thinning in insulated pipelines. The test sample is a stainless steel having different thickness, laminated by plastic insulation to simulate the pipelines in NPPs. The excitation coils in the probe is driven by a rectangular current pulse, the difference of two Hall sensors has been measured as a resultant PEC signal. The peak value of the detected signal is used to describe the wall thinning. The double core probe has better performance to detect the wall thinning covered with insulation; the single core probe can detect the wall thinning up to an insulation thickness of 18 mm, whereas the double probe can detect up to 25 mm. The results show that the double core PEC probe has the potential to detect the wall thinning in an insulated pipeline of the NPPs.
Elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film is measured under the condition of viscosity index improver added to base oil. In-situ optical contact method using the interference principle make the measuring resolution of ~5 nm possible and enables the measuring range all over the contact area of up to ~300 $\mu\textrm{m}$ diameter. What is more important to the developed method by the author is that the measurement of EHL film thickness is possible in the range from 100 nm to 2 $\mu\textrm{m}$, which is the regime of worst contact failures in precision machinery. Viscosity index improver (VII) is one of the major additives to the modem multigrade lubricants for the viscosity stability against temperature rise. However, it causes shear thinning effects which make the film thickness lessened very delicately at high shear rate (over $10^5 s^{-1}$) of general EHL contact regime. In order to exactly verify the VIIs performance of viscosity stability at such high shear rate, it is necessary to make the measurement of EHL film thickness down to ~100 nm with fine resolution for the preliminary study of viscosity control. In this work, EHL film thickness of VII added lubricant is measured with the resolution of ~5 nm, which will give very informative design tool for the synthesis of lubricants regarding the matter of load carrying capacity at high shear rate condition.

The objective of this study is to classify the geometry of wall-thinning defect that causes a circumferential crack in the pipe elbows subjected to internal pressure. For this objective, first of all a criterion to determine the occurrence of circumferential cracking at wall-thinned area was developed based on finite element simulation for burst tests of pipe elbow specimens that showed axial and circumferential cracking at wall-thinned area. In addition, parametric finite element analysis including various wall-thinning geometries, locations, and pipe geometries was conducted and the wall-thinning geometries that initiate circumferential crack were determined by applying the criterion to the results of parametric analysis. It showed that the circumferential crack occurs at wall-thinning defect, which has a deep, wide, and short geometry. Also, it is indicated that the pipe elbows with larger radius to thickness ratio are more susceptible to circumferential cracking at wall-thinned area.
The accelerated corrosion by Flow Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) has caused unexpected rupture of piping, hindering the safety of nuclear power plants (NPPs) and sometimes causing personal injury. For the safety, it may be necessary to select some pipes in terms of condition monitoring and to measure the change in thickness of pipes in real time. Direct current potential drop (DCPD) method has advantages in on-line monitoring of pipe wall thinning. However, it has a disadvantage in that it is difficult to quantify thinning due to various thinning shapes and thus there is a limitation in application. The machine learning approach has advantages in that it can be easily applied because the machine can learn the signals of various thinning shapes and can identify the thinning using these. In this paper, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed by applying direct current to a carbon steel pipe and measuring the potential drop. The fundamental machine learning was carried out and the piping thinning model was developed. In this process, the features of DCPD to thinning were proposed.
Pipe wall-thinning by flow-accelerated corrosion and various types of erosion is significant damage in secondary system piping of nuclear power plants(NPPs). All NPPs in Korea have management programs to ensure pipe integrity from degradation mechanisms. Ultrasonic test(UT) is widely used for pipe wall thickness measurement. Numerous UT measurements have been performed during scheduled outages. Wall-thinning rates are determined conservatively according to several evaluation methods developed by Electric Power Research Institute(EPRI). The issue of reliability caused by measurement error should be considered in the process of evaluation. The reliability analysis method was developed for single and multiple measurement data in the previous researches. This paper describes the application results of reliability analysis method to real measurement data during scheduled outage and proved its benefits.
As part of continuing efforts to investigate nonlinear dynamics and stability of film casting process, our earlier results obtained by Lee et al. (2001b) have been extended in the present study to cover the film casting of both extension thickening and extension thinning fluids. The same instability mechanism and draw resonance criterion previously derived have been found valid here, and a rather complex dynamic behavior of film width in contrast to that of film thickness has also been confirmed. The effect of fluid viscoelasticity on draw resonance, however, exhibits opposite results depending on whether the fluid is extension thickening or thinning, i.e., it stabilizes film casting in the former while destabilizing in the latter. The encapsulation extrusion method which recently has been successfully employed to stabilize industrially important paper coating process, has been theoretically explained in the present study as to why such stabilization is possible.
