An experimental study of steam condensation on a subcooled thick water layer (0.018 ~0.032 m) in a countercurrent stratified flow has been performed using a nearly horizontal circular pipe. A total of 103 average interfacial condensation heat transfer coefficients were obtained and parametric effects of steam and water flow rates and the degree of subcooling on condensation heat transfer were examined. The measured local temperature and velocity distributions in the thick water layer revealed that there was a thermal stratification due to the lack of full turbulent thermal mixing in the lower region of the water layer Two empirical Nusselt number correlations, one in terms of average steam and water Reynolds numbers, and the water Prandtl number, and the other in terms of the Jakob number in place of the Prandtl number, which agree with most of the data within $\pm$ 25%, were developed based on the bulk flow properties. Comparisons of the present data with existing correlations showed that the present data were significantly lower than the values predicted by existing correlations.
The well-crystalline hydroxyapatite($Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6(OH)_2$ ; HAp) layer having a biocompatibility was successfully coated onto titanium substrate using a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering, and effects of sputtering gas and the thickness of HAp film on a crystal growth of the HAp layers were investigated. The deposition rate of the layer sputtered with water-vapour gas was slower than that of the layer sputtered with argon gas. The results of X-ray diffraction demonstrated that the about $0.8\mu\textrm{m}$ thick HAp film under water-vapour gas was an amorphous phase, the about $1.2\mu\textrm{m}$ thick film was (100) plane-oriented HAp, and the about $1.5\mu\textrm{m}$ thick film was (001)plane-oriented HAp. FT-IR analysis proved that hydroxyl group of the layer sputtered with argon gas was defected, but that of the layer sputtered with water-vapour gas was not defected. From these results, it was favorable to use water-vapour gas on the HAp coatings onto metal surface.
Recently, an autotrophic single-stage nitrogen removal (ASSNR) process based on the anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) reaction has been proven as an economical ammonia treatment. It is highly evident that double-layered gel beads are a promising alternative to the natural biofilm for ASSNR because of the high mechanical strength of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/alginate structure and efficient protection of ANAMMOX bacteria from dissolved oxygen (DO) due to the thick outer layer. However, the thick outer layer results in severe mass transport limitation and consequent lowered bacterial activity. Therefore, the effects of the thickness of the outer layer on the overall reaction rate were tested in the biofilm model using AQUASIM for ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and ANAMMOX bacteria. A thickness of 0.5~1.0 mm is preferred for the maximum total nitrogen (TN) removal. In addition, a DO of 0.5 mg/L resulted in the best total nitrogen removal. A higher DO induces NOB activity and consequent lower TN removal efficiency. The optimal density of AO B and NO B density was 1~10% for a 10% ANAMMOX bacterial in the double-layered PVA/alginate gel beads. The real effects of operating parameters of the thickness of the outer layer, DO and concentrations of biomass balance should be intensively investigated in the controlled experiments in batch and continuous modes.
The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the migration of fine granular materials into overlying layers under cyclic loading using a modified large-scale triaxial system as a physical model test. Samples prepared for the modified large-scale triaxial system comprised a 60 mm thick gravel layer overlying a 120 mm thick subgrade layer, which could be either tailings or railway sand. A quantitative analysis of the migration of fine granular materials was based on the mass percentage and grain size of migrated materials collected in the gravel. In addition, the cyclic characteristics, i.e., accumulated axial strain and excess pore water pressure, were evaluated. As a result, the total migration rate of the railway sand sample was found to be small. However, the total migration rate of the sample containing tailings in the subgrade layer was much higher than that of the railway sand sample. In addition, the migration analysis revealed that finer tailings particles tended to be migrated into the upper gravel layer easier than coarser tailings particles under cyclic loading. This could be involved in significant increases in excess pore water pressure at the last cycles of the physical model test.
A grooved surface with anisotropic wettability was fabricated on a silicon substrate using photolithography, reactive ion etching, and a KOH etching process. The contact angles (CAs) of water droplets were measured and compared with the theoretical values in the Cassie state and Wenzel state. The experimental results showed that the contact area between a water droplet and a solid surface was important to determine the wettability of the water. The specimens with native oxide layers presented CAs ranging from $71.6^{\circ}$ to $86.4^{\circ}$. The droplets on the specimens with a native oxide layer could be in the Cassie state because they had relatively smooth surfaces. However, the CAs of the specimens with thick oxide layers ranged from $33.4^{\circ}$ to $59.1^{\circ}$. This indicated that the surface roughness for a specimen with a relatively thick oxide layer was higher, and the water droplet was in the Wenzel state. From the CA measurement results, it was observed that the wetting on the grooved surface was anisotropic for all of the specimens.

Water molecules on a Ru(0001) surface are anomalously acidic compared to bulk water. The observation was made by conducting reactive ion scattering, reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption measurements for the adsorption of ammonia onto a water layer formed on Ru(0001). The study shows that the water molecules in the first intact $H_2O$ bilayer spontaneously release a proton to NH3 adsorbates to produce $NH_4{^+}$. However, such proton transfer does not occur for $H_2O$, OH, and H in a mixed adsorption layer or for $H_2O$ in a thick ice film surface.
Graphene, one single atomic layer of graphite, has attracted extensive attention in various research fields since its first isolation from graphite. Application in the future electronics requires better understanding and manipulation of electronic properties of graphene supported on various solid substrates. Here, we present a study on charge doping and morphology of graphene prepared on atomically flat and highly polar mica substrates. Ultra-flat single-layer graphene was prepared by micro-exfoliation of graphite followed by deposition on cleaved mica substrates. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed presence of ultra-thin water films formed in a layer-by-layer manner between graphene and mica substrates. Raman spectroscopy showed that a few angstrom-thick water films efficiently block electron transfer from graphene to mica. Hole doping in graphene caused by underlying mica substrates was also visualized by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM).
The pore size of nickel (Ni) bottom electrode layer (BEL) for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells embedded with ultrathin-film electrolyte was controlled by changing the substrate surface morphology and deposition process parameters. For ~150-nm-thick Ni BEL, the upper side of an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) substrate with ~65-nm-sized pores provided ~1.7 times smaller pore size than the lower side of the AAO substrate. For ~100-nm-thick Ni BEL, the AAO substrate with ~45-nm-sized pores provided ~2.6 times smaller pore size than the AAO substrate with ~95-nm-sized pores, and the deposition pressure of ~4 mTorr provided ~1.3 times smaller pore size than that of ~48 mTorr. On the AAO substrate with ~65-nm-sized pores, the Ni BEL deposited for 400 seconds had ~2 times smaller pore size than the Ni BEL deposited for 100 seconds.
