  • The effect of Ba substitution for Sr on the lattice parameters and the temperature dependence of the thermoelectric power and electrical resistivity has been investigated for Y(Sr$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$)Cu$_{2.7}$Mo$_{0.3}$O$_z$ (x=0${\sim}$2.0). Both a and c lattice parameters increase as the Ba content, x increases. The correlation between Tc and the carrier concentration estimated from the thermoelectric power data indicates that the change of hole concentration is negligible for x ${\le}$ 1.0 in contrast to the large change for x > 1.

  • New cuprates with the nominal composition $(Pb_{0.75}Sn_{0.25})Sr_2(Ca_{1-x}Lu_x)Cu_2O_z(x=0.4{\sim}1.0)$ have been synthesized. These materials exhibit superconducting properties for 0.4 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.7. It is also observed that the superconductivity of the as-prepared sample is enhanced by post-annealing at high temperature followed by quenching. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the c lattice parameter decreases as x increases whereas the a lattice parameter is nearly independent of the value of x for both the as-prepared and the post-treated samples. The thermoelectric power measurements indicate that the post-heat-treatments result in an increase in the hole carrier density which account for the observed increase of $T_c$. Bulk superconductivity with a $T_c$ value of 60 K is observed in this system.

  • A solid state chemical approach to discover new mateials with enhanced thermoelectric properties is described. The aim is to construct three-dimensional bismuth chalcogenide framework structures which contain tonically interacting alkali or alkaline earth atoms. The alkali atoms tend to have soft "rattling" type phonon modes which result in very low thermal conductivity in these materials. Another desirable feature in this class of compounds is the low crystal symmetry and narrow band-gaps. Several promising materials such as BaBiTe3, KBi6.33S10, K2Bi8S13, β-K2Bi8Se13, K2.5Bi8.5Se14, Ba4Bi6Se13, Eu2Pb2Bi6Se13, Al1+xPb4-2xSb7+xSe15 (A=K, Rb), and CsBi4Te6 are described.

  • The photoelectronic properties of CdTe films sintered with various amounts of $CdCl_2$ and $CuCl_2$ have been investigated by measurements of dark electrical resistivity, photocurrent, thermoelectric power, optical transmission and by observation of microstructure. The grain size and optical transmission of sintered CdTe films increase with increasing amount of $CdCl_2$ indicating that $CdCl_2$ acts as a sintering aid. The photoconductivity gain(A-$cm^2/W$) increases and resistivity($\Omega$-cm) decreases with increasing amount of $CuCl_2$ up to 100ppm due to the occurance of Cu-doping during sintering. The dark resistivity could be reduced farther by post heat treatments. The dark resistivity was still high($10^3{\Omega}$-cm) so that the accurate determination of the hole concentration by Hall measurement or by thermoelectric power measurement was not possible. From the analysis of electrical activation energy, however it can be concluded that the hole concentration is less than $10^{14}/cm^3$ and all grains are depleted of carrier by the trapping centers at grain boundaries.

  • Peltier cells have low efficiency, but they are becoming attractive alternatives for affordable and environmentally clean cooling. In this line, the current article develops closed-form and semianalytical solutions to improve the temperature distribution of Bi2Te3 thermoelements. From the distribution, the main objective of the current work-the optimal electric intensity to maximize cooling-is inferred. The general one-dimensional differential coupled equation is integrated for linear and quadratic geometry of thermoelements, under temperature constant properties. For a general shape, a piece-wise solution based on heat flux continuity among virtual layers gives accurate analytical solutions. For variable properties, another piece-wise solution is developed but solved iteratively. Taking advantage of the formulae, the optimal intensity is directly derived with a minimal computational cost; its value will be of utility for more advanced designs. Finally, a parametric study including straight, two linear, barrel, hourglass and vase geometries is presented, drawing conclusions on how the shape of the thermoelement affects the coupled phenomena. A specially developed coupled and non-linear finite element research code is run taking into account all the materials of the cell and using symmetries and repetitions. These accurate results are used to validate the analytical ones.

  • Thermoelectric properties of the p-type $(Bi,Sb)_2Te_3$, hot-pressed with the $(Bi,Sb)_2Te_3$ powders fabricated by melting/grinding method, were characterized with variation of the hot-pressing conditions. Thermoelectric characteristics of the hot-pressed $(Bi,Sb)_2Te_3$ were also analyzed with addition of $ZrO_2$ as nano inclusions. With increasing the hotpressing temperature from $350^{\circ}C$ to $550^{\circ}C$, Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity decreased from 275 ${\mu}V$/K to 230 ${\mu}V$/K and 6.68 $m{\Omega}$-cm to 1.86 $m{\Omega}$-cm, respectively. The power factor decreased with addition of $ZrO_2$ nano powders more than 1 vol%, implying that the optimum amount of $ZrO_2$ nano inclusions to get a maximum power factor would be less than 1 vol%.

  • Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect is known to be the physical origin for various exotic magnetic phenomena in the low-dimensional systems. Recently, SOC also draws lots of attention in the study on magnetically doped thermoelectric alloys to determine their properties as the thermoelectric application as well as the topological insulator via the exact electronic structures determination near the Fermi level. In this research, aiming to investigate the spin-orbit coupling effect on the structural properties such as the lattice constants and the bulk modulus of the most widely investigated thermoelectric host material, $Bi_2Te_3$, we carried out the first-principles electronic structure calculation using the all-electron FLAPW (full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave) method. Employing both the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), the structural optimization is achieved by varying the in-plane lattice constant fixing the perpendicular lattice constant and vice versa, to find that the SOC effect increases the equilibrium lattices slightly in both directions while it markedly reduces the bulk modulus value implying the strong orientational dependence, which are attributed to the material's intrinsic structural anisotropy.

  • $Bi_2Te_3-Bi_2Se_3$ alloy which is typical n-type thermoelectric material were grown by traveling heater method (THM) technique. We investigate the effect of the composition of $100-x(Bi_2Te_3)-x(Bi_2Se_3)$ and doping of n-type dopants such as $SbI_3$ and $CdCl_2$. Maximum figure of merit of $Bi_2Te_3-Bi_2Se_3$ alloy was observed with $CdCl_2$ 0.1 wt% (Z: $2.73{\times}10^{-3}/K$) and $SbI_3$ 0.05 wt% (Z: $2.29{\times}10^{-3}/K$). Deviation along the length of $Bi_2Te_3-Bi_2Se_3$ ingot grown by THM method is low, which indicates that the ingot is very homogenized. Also we observed the close relationship of between anisotropy ratio and dopant in the $90(Bi_2Te_3)-10(Bi_2Se_3)$ alloys. And we confirmed the fact that anisotropy ratio exerts thermoelectric performance in $Bi_2Te_3$ based n-type thermoelectric material.

  • Bi-doped n-type PbTe thermoeletric materials were fabricated by mechanical alloying and hot pressing. The intering characteristics and thermoelectric properties of the hot- pressed PbTe were characterized and compared with the properties of the specimens prepared by meltingigrinding method. The hot-pressed PbTe specimens fabricated by mechanical alloying exhibited more negative Seebeck coefficient, higher electrical resistivity and lower thermal conductivity. compared to ones prepared by meltingigrinding. The maximum figure-of-merit increased and the temperature for the maximum figure-of-merit shifted to lower temperature for the specimens fabricated by mechanical alloying. When hot pressed at $650^{\circ}C$, 0.3 wt% Bi-doped PbTe fabricated by mechanical alloying and meltingjgrinding exhibited maximum figure-of-merits of $1.33\times10^{-3}/K$ at $200^{\circ}C$ and $1.07\times10^{-3}/K$ at $400^{\circ}C$ respectively.

  • In this study, Bi-Sb-Te thermoelectric materials are produced by mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). To examine the influence of the milling atmosphere on the microstructure and thermo-electric (TE) properties, a p-type Bi-Sb-Te composite powder is mechanically alloyed in the presence of argon and air atmospheres. The oxygen content increases to 55% when the powder is milled in the air atmosphere, compared with argon. All grains are similar in size and uniformly, distributed in both atmospheric sintered samples. The Seebeck coefficient is higher, while the electrical conductivity is lower in the MA (Air) sample due to a low carrier concentration compared to the MA (Ar) sintered sample. The maximum figure of merit (ZT) is 0.91 and 0.82 at 350 K for the MA (Ar) and MA (Air) sintered samples, respectively. The slight enhancement in the ZT value is due to the decrease in the oxygen content during the MA (Ar) process. Moreover, the combination of mechanical alloying and SPS process shows a higher hardness and density values for the sintered samples.
