  • Thermally-stabilized fiber-optic current sensors are proposed and demonstrated. The sensor head is made of two coil formers combined perpendicularly. In this sensor head, bending-induced birefringences can be reduced to the level much smaller than those of the single former type because the eigen-axes of the two perpendicular coil formers are made orthogonal to each other. Moreover, thermal variation of the birefringence is also expected to be minimized by the orthogonality of the two polarization eigen-axes. We changed the temperature slowly in the range of 20~45$^{\circ}C$ during 100 minutes. The overall linearity of the sensor is better than 1.2% in the range of 0~1000A. The long-term fluctuation of the sensor is less than 1% when measured for 3 hours at 500A and room temperature. Two orthogonally-polarized laser diodes are combined together to make the incident beam unpolarized. In the signal processing, the signals are separated by two parts and normalized respectively, which minimize the efects of optical fluctuations coming from sources, connectors, etc.

  • A long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) system comprising over 700 sensors of sixteen types has been implemented on the Guangzhou Television and Sightseeing Tower (GTST) of 610 m high for real-time monitoring of the structure at both construction and service stages. As part of this sophisticated SHM system, 48 temperature sensors have been deployed at 12 cross-sections of the reinforced concrete inner structure of the GTST to provide on-line monitoring via a wireless data transmission system. In this paper, the differential temperature profiles in the reinforced concrete inner structure of the GTST, which are mainly caused by solar radiation, are recognized from the monitoring data with the purpose of understanding the temperature-induced structural internal forces and deformations. After a careful examination of the pre-classified temperature measurement data obtained under sunny days and non-sunny days, common characteristic of the daily temperature variation is observed from the data acquired in sunny days. Making use of 60-day temperature measurement data obtained in sunny days, statistical patterns of the daily rising temperature and daily descending temperature are synthesized, and temperature distribution models of the reinforced concrete inner structure of the GTST are formulated using linear regression analysis. The developed monitoring-based temperature distribution models will serve as a reliable input for numerical prediction of the temperature-induced deformations and provide a robust basis to facilitate the design and construction of similar structures in consideration of thermal effects.

  • Woolastonite from Susan occurs as intercalations in limestone beds of Lower Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup. It is a thermal metamorphic product of impure limestone. Electron microprobe analysis shows that it is considerably pure wollastonite. It has triclinic cell with a=7.932$\AA$, b=7.328$\AA$, c=7.069$\AA$, $\alpha$=89.995$^{\circ}$, $\beta$=$95.255^{\circ}$, and $ \Upsilon=103.367^{\circ}$.Dissolution behaviors of wollastonite have been studied conducting three different dissolution experiments; two different reactions with HC1 (one batch and one re-initialization experiment) and one traction with distilled water. In the batch type powder wollastonite-HCl reaction, pH of solution rapidly increases in the early stage and then its rate of increase slows down to reach plateau resulting in parabolic relationship with time. It is represented by the early rapid rise and fall in pH giving a sharp pH-edge and succeeding slow rise in the re-initialization experiment. The early rapid rise in pH is due to the rapid sorption of H- in solution to oxygens on the reactive surface of wollastonite and the fall in pH means that all reactive surface sites are occupied by H- ions and no more H- adsorption occurs. The slow rise in pH following the pH- edge is due to the dissolution of wollastonite as evidenced by the correlation of pH variation and cation concentration. Dissolution of powder wollastonite in HCl shows linear trend with time. Si is dissolved predominantly over Ca at a constant rate. Ca is dissolved predominantly in the very early stage. Dissolution rate of coarse-grained wollastonite fragments in distilled water is parabolic with times howing a rapid reaction in the early stage and a slow reaction in the advanced stage. The Ca/Si ratio in solution is high in the case of coarse-grained wollastonite fragment as compared with powder wollastonite. The coarse-grained wollastonite fragment-water (acid) reaction resulted in the solution with an elevated constant pH value (alkaline) giving an important significance on the environmental view point.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine airborne bioaerosols such as bacteria and fungi in the kitchens of restaurants, and to assess the effects of thermal factors on the levels of the bioaerosols. Methods: Air samples were taken from kitchens of nine restaurants. An Anderson type air sampler was used for sampling and measurements. Petri dishes filled with a microbiological culture medium (trypticase soy agar for bacteria and Sabouraud dextrose agar for fungi) were used as the sampling surface. Results: The levels of bacterial aerosol measured were $10-10^3CFU/m^3$ and fungal aerosol $10-10^2CFU/m^3$, respectively The mean values of air temperature and relative humidity in the kitchens were $24.6^{\circ}C$ and 46.4%, respectively. Overall, the levels of bacterial aerosol varied by the restaurant type, and fungal aerosol by the business period (p < 0.05). The main effect of air temperature and interaction effect of air temperature and relative humidity onto the bacterial level were significant (p < 0.05), whereas the effects were not significant onto the fungal level. Conclusions: The results indicate a wide variation in the levels of bioaerosols among different kitchens. The observed differences in bioaerosol levels in the kitchens reflect different periods of use. The interactions of air temperature and relative humidity onto the bacterial level suggest that constant attention should be paid to avoid peaks of contamination during the summer season.

  • Portland cement production-1.5billion tonnes yearly worldwide-contributes substantially to global atmospheric pollution($\sim$7% of total of CO$_2$ emissions). Attempts to increase the utilization of fly ash, a by-products from thermal power plant to partially replace the cement in concrete are gathering momentum. But most of fly ash is currently dumped in landfills, thus creating a threat to the environment. Therefore, In this study, influence of curing temperature(30, 60, 90$^{\circ}$C) on the strength of properties fly ash based cement ZERO mortar was investigate, measured a weight change and pH change according to each care of curing temperature. The test results that a curing at 90$^{\circ}$C is appropriate in case of the high strength concrete is required in the early-age of the curing and 60$^{\circ}$C is efficient for the case of requiring high strength at age 28 days. Furthermore pH variation and value of compressive strength are judged to correlate but change of weight is not the case.

  • In general, an error budget of monopulse radar is proposed by manufacturer who assuming that all of external enviromental error resources such as multipath, glint, dynamic lag variation are removed. So until now, a measurement uncertainty of monopulse radar can be discussed including external enviromental error resources. In this paper, it is described that which kinds of error resource can effect on monopulse radar measurement uncertainty for different target property. To prove it experimentally, at first a simulation result is described assuming that all of external enviromental error resources are removed. It only includes receiver thermal noise. And then, monopulse radar measurement uncertainty estimation results tracking on calibration target which is fixed on specific position, calibration sphere which is moving slowly, weapon systems firing test which is moving fast are described quantitativly. All of these targets have different dynamic property.

  • Electrical conductivity of$50Li_2O-xTiO_2-(50-x)P_2O_5$ glasses has been studied with an increase of the intermediate$TiO_2$content. Thermal properties were observed from TG-DTA measurement and the variation of glass structure was investigated by FT-IR. The density and glass transition temperature increased with an increase of the $TiO_2$ content. These results were attributed to the fact that bond strengthening was occurred because of the formation of P-O-Ti cross linkages in the glass. The ionic conductivity increased with $TiO_2$ content and a maximum value, $1.2{imes}10^{-6}$S/cm showed at x=20. The ionic conductivity showed a large increasement as a result that the pyrophosphate group become the predominant structural unit. This result can explain that Li ions mobility increased as a number of non-bridging oxygen on phosphate units increased.

  • In this work, a PWR reactor core dynamics is identified online by a recursive least squares method. Based on this identified reactor model consisting of the control rod position and the core average coolant temperature, the future average coolant temperature is predicted. A model predictive control method is applied to design an automatic controller for thermal power control in PWRs. The basic concept of the model predictive control is to solve an optimization problem for a finite future at current time and to implement as the current control input only the first optimal control input among the solutions of the finite time steps. At the next time step, the procedure to solve the optimization problem is then repeated. The objectives of the proposed model predictive controller are to minimize both the difference between the predicted core coolant temperature and the desired one, and the variation of the control rod positions. Also, the objectives are subject to maximum and minimum control rod positions and maximum control rod speed. Therefore, the genetic algorithm that is appropriate to accomplish multiple objectives is used to optimize the model predictive controller. A 3-dimensional nuclear reactor analysis code, MASTER that was developed by Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), is used to verify the proposed controller for a nuclear reactor. From results of numerical simulation to check the performance of the proposed controller at the 5%/min ramp increase or decrease of a desired load and its 10% step increase or decrease which are design requirements, it was found that the nuclear power level controlled by the proposed controller could track the desired power level very well.

  • In this study, we demonstrate that ZnO deposited onto $SiO_2$ substrates by magnetron sputtering produces p-type ZnO at higher $O_2$ pressure and n-type ZnO at lower $O_2$ pressure. We also report the effect of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) on the stability of undoped ZnO thin films. The films were immersed in 30% $H_2O_2$ for 1 min at $30^{\circ}C$ and annealed in $O_2$at $450^{\circ}C$. The carrier concentration, mobility. and conductivity were measured by a Hall effect measurement system. The Hall measurement results for ZnO films untreated with $H_2O_2$ but annealed in $O_2$ indicate that oxygen fraction greater than ~0.5 produces undoped p-type ZnO films, whereas oxygen fraction less than ~0.5 produces undoped n-type ZnO films. This is attributed to the fact that the oxygen vacancies ($V_o$) decrease and the oxygen interstitials ($O_i$) or zinc vacancies ($V_{Zn}$) increase with increasing oxygen atoms incorporated into ZnO films during deposition and $O_2$ post-annealing.

  • This paper describes the machining characteristics of the MoSi$_2$--based composites through the process of electric discharge drilling with various tubular electrodes. In addition to hardness characteristics, microstructures of Nb/MoSi$_2$laminate composites were evaluated from the variation of fabricating conditions, such as preparation temperature, applied pressure, and pressure holding time. MoSi$_2$-based composites have been developed in new materials for jet engines of supersonic-speed airplanes and gas turbines for high-temperature generators. These high performance engines may require new hard materials with high strength and high temperature-resistance. Also, with the exception of grinding, traditional machining methods are not applicable to these new materials. Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a thermal process that utilizes a spark discharge to melt a conductive material. The tool electrode is almost -unloaded, because there is n direct contact between the tool electrode and the work piece. By combining a non-conducting ceramic with more conducting ceramic, it was possible to raise the electrical conductivity. From experimental results, it was found that the lamination from Nb sheet and MoSi$_2$ powder was an excellent strategy to improve hardness characteristics of monolithic MoSi$_2$. However, interfacial reaction products, like (Nb, Mo)SiO$_2$and Nb$_2$Si$_3$formed at the interface of Nb/MoSi$_2$, and increased with fabricating temperature. MoSi$_2$composites, with which a hole drilling was not possible through the conventional machining process, enhanced the capacity of ED-drilling by adding MbSi$_2$, relative to that of SiC or ZrO$_2$reinforcements.
