  • This research analyzed the current situation and problems with an environmental impact assessment to provide a rational ocean physics assessment technique for power plant thermal effluent. This research also tried to create an improvement plan for heated effluent diffusion impact assessment by examining the reporting regulations for environmental impact assessment, national and international evaluation guidelines, etc. In the case of evaluating the oceanographic impact of heated effluent discharged from power plants, a pre-investigation is necessary before a full-scale presentence investigation, to accurately predict and minimize power plant construction effects on the surrounding environments. Before this presentence investigation, moreover, an integrated presentence plan, which agrees with the business plan, effect prediction, and post-investigation, needs to be established. A sufficient summit investigation must be made, which considers climate changes, and new and additional power plant construction. For accurate long-term oceanic environmental change prediction, the credibility of effect prediction must be elevated by presenting an evaluation method that is categorized by numerical organization models, verification methods, result presentation, and other things. Furthermore, unproductive conflicts between the people involved in heated effluent evaluation should be reduced by these improvement plans.

  • Time-of-flight impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy (TOF-ICISS) was applied to study the geometrical structure of the epitaxially grown BaTiO₃ layers on the MgO(100) surface. Hetero-epitaxial BaTiO₃ layers can be deposited by the following steps: first thermal evaporation of titanium onto the MgO(100) surface in the atmosphere of oxygen at 400℃, secondly thermal evaporation of barium in the same manner, and finally annealing at 800℃. Well ordered perovskite BaTiO₃ was confirmed from the ICISS spectra and reflection high electron energy diffraction (RHEED) patterns. It was also revealed that BaTiO₃ had cubic structure with the same lattice parameter of bulk phase.

  • To examine the effect of thermal discharge from nuclear power plants, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the most important variables measured by satellite remote sensing. However, the study was not much comparison of field data and satellite SST from operational Landsat 8 Thermal Infrared Sensor(TIRS) and Landsat 7 ETM+. The Landsat 8 TIRS have 2 spilt Thermal Infrared channels but ETM+ uses one channel for extracting of SST. In spite of that this research carried out that Landsat 7 ETM+ have more profitable for correction of SST than Landsat 8 TIRS. The used 15 Landsat 7 and 8 Thermal Infrared data of path/row 114-36 were processed by SST algorithm of ENVI and IDL. The in-situ SST data from KHOA(Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration) compared with satellite SST and the accuracy of extracted SST were assessed by each field sites in-situ point data with time series satellite SST.

  • The present paper reports the impact of thermal treatment on the characteristics of core-sheath type hybrid technical yarns. The core-sheath type hybrid yams are prepared using DREF-III technology. Polyester and glass multifilaments are used as core components whereas the cotton and polyester staple fibers are the sheath components wrapped around the core filament with different proportions to form a hybrid structure. The thermal treatment is carried out both in dry and in wet state under relaxed condition and the thermal shrinkage, sheath-slipping resistance and tensile and bending properties of hybrid yarns have been studied. Thermal treatment markedly increases the thermal shrinkage and sheath-slipping resistance of hybrid yarns with polyester multifilament in core, but insignificant effect for yarns with glass multifilament in core. Breaking elongation of hybrid yams with polyester multifilament in core increases with treatment temperature. The hybrid yarns with glass multifilament in core are least affected by thermal treatment.

  • The morphology and impact strength of alloys of high density polyethylene(HDPE) and nylon-6(PA) with modified $ethylene-{\alpha}-olefin$ copolymer(OCP) as compatibilizer and impact modifier were measured by the scanning electron microscope(SEM) and the notched Izod impact test(and the high rate impact test), respectively. HDPE is incompatible with PA and specimens obtained from simple mechanical mixing show the inferior properties. However, it was indicated that OCP played roles of not only impact modifier but also compatibilizer. High rate impact test results were different from those of the notched Izod impact test, but in both tests OCP was effective for HDPE/PA blends. From SEM observation, the size of the dispersed phase in alloys prepared with OCP is much smaller than that of alloys without OCP and the interfacial adhesion of alloys prepared with OCP is also better. Toughening mechanism of polymer blends was discussed by combining the morphology analysis with mechanical and thermal properties.

  • There are at least three effects of the non-thermal particle bombardment on the solar atmosphere: (1) non-thermal ionization and excitation; (2) proton-hydrogen charge exchange; (3) impact line polarization. Due to the non-thermal ionization and excitation effects of electron bombardments in flares, H$\alpha$ line is widely broadened and shows a strong central reversal. Significant enhancements at the line wings of Ly$\alpha$ and Ly$\beta$ are also predicted. In the case of proton bombardment, less strong broadening and no large central reversal are expected. However, due to proton-hydrogen charge exchange, the enhancements at the red wings of Ly$\alpha$ and especially of Ly$\beta$ lines at the early impulsive phase of flares are significant. Electron beam can also in some cases generates visible and UV continuum emission in white-light flares. However, at the onset phase, a negative 'black' flare may appear in several seconds, due to the increase of the $H^-$ opacity. The impact polarization of atomic lines can provide complementary information on the energetic particles, the energy transport and deposit in the solar chromosphere. New results of spectropolarimetric analysis for the major flare on July 23, 2002 are also given in the paper.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/epoxy composites are prepared by a vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) method. The mechanical properties, fracture surface morphologies, and thermal stabilities of these nanocomposites are evaluated for epoxy resins with various amounts of MWCNTs. Composites consisting of different amounts of MWCNTs displayed an increase of the work of adhesion between the MWCNTs and the matrix, which improved both the tensile and impact strengths of the composites. The tensile and impact strengths of the MWCNT/epoxy composite improved by 59 and 562% with 0.3 phr of MWCNTs, respectively, compared to the epoxy composite without MWCNTs. Thermal stability of the 0.3 phr MWCNT/epoxy composite increased compared to other epoxy composites with MWCNTs. The enhancement of the mechanical and thermal properties of the MWCNT/epoxy nanocomposites is attributed to improved dispersibility and strong interfacial interaction between the MWCNTs and the epoxy in the composites prepared by VARTM.

  • Buildings in the city acts as a cause of distorted wind direction, wind speed, causing the stagnation of the air flow. In the recent trend of climate change can not but consider the temperature rise of the urbanization. This study was aimed to analyze the thermal comfort of planetary boundary layer in different artificial constructions areas which has a direct impact on urban climate, and estimating the warming phenomena. Envi-met model was used to consider the urban structure associated with urban growth in order to precisely determine the impact of the building on the city weather condition. The analyzed values of thermal comfort index were temperature, wind speed, horizontal and vertical turbulent diffusivity. In particular, analysis of the PPD(Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied) represents the human thermal comfort. In this study, by adjusting the arrangement and proportion of the top floor building in the urban it was found that the inflow of the fresh air and cooling can be derived low PPD. Vertical heat flux amount of the city caused by climate change was a factor to form a high potential temperature in the city and the accumulation of cold air does not appear near the surface. Based on this, to make the city effectively respond to climate change may require a long-term restructuring of urban spatial structure and density management.

  • The effects of (1) phonon dispersion on thermal conductivity model and (2) differentiation of group velocity and phase velocity are examined for germanium. The results show drastic change of thermal conductivity regardless of the same relaxation time model. Also the contribution of transverse acoustic (TA) phonon and longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon on the thermal conductivity at high temperatures is reassessed by considering more rigorous dispersion model. Holland model, which is commonly used for modeling thermal conductivity, underestimates the scattering rate for TA phonon at high frequency. This leads the conclusion that TA is dominant heat transfer mode at high temperatures. But according to the rigorous consideration of phonon dispersion, the reduction of thermal conductivity is much larger than the estimation of Holland model, thus the TA at high frequency is expected to be no more dominant heat transfer mode. Another heat transfer mechanism may exist at high temperatures. Two possible explanations we the roles of (1) Umklapp scattering of LA phonon at high frequency and (2) optical phonon.

  • A study was made to examine the effects of postweld heat treatment(PWHT) on the toughness and microstructures in the weld heat affected zone(HAZ) of Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steel. The Gleeble thermal/mechanical simulator was used to simulate the weld HAZ. The details between toughness and PWHT of HAZ were studied by impact test, optical microscopy(O.M.), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The decrease of HAZ toughness in single thermal cycle comparing to base plate is ascribed to the coarsed-grain formed by heating to 1350.deg.C. The increase of HAZ toughness in double thermal cycle comparine to single thermal cycle is due to the fine ferrite(.alpha.) grain transformed from austenite(.gamma.)formed by heating to .alpha./.gamma. two phase region. Cu precipitated during aging for increasing the strength of base metal is dissolved during single thermal cycle to 1350.deg.C and is precipitated little on cooling and heating during subsequent weld thermal cycle. It precipitates by introducing PWHT. Thus, the decrease of toughness in triple thermal cycle of $T_{p1}$ = 1350.deg.C, $T_{p2}$ = 800.deg.C and $T_{p3}$ = 500.deg.C does not occur owing to the precipitation of Cu. The behaviors of Cu=precipitates in HAZ is similar to that in base plate. PWHT at 550.deg.C shows highest hardness and lowest toughness, whereas PWHT at 650.deg.C shows reasonable toughness, which improves the toughness of as-welded state.state.
