  • This article studies the effects of heat generation/absorption and thermal radiation on the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Casson fluid flow past a vertical plate through rotating porous medium with constant temperature and mass diffusion. It is assumed that the plate temperature and concentration level are raised uniformly. For finding the exact solution, a set of non-dimensional partial differential equations is solved analytically using the Laplace transform technique. The influence of various non-dimensional parameters on the velocity are discussed, including the effects of the magnetic parameter M, heat generation/absorption Q, thermal radiation parameter R, Prandtl number Pr, Schmidt number Sc, permeability of porous medium parameter, Casson fluid parameter γ, on velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles, which are discussed through several figures. It is found that velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles in the case of heat generation parameter Q, Casson fluid parameter γ, thermal Grashof number Gr, mass Grashof number Gc, Permeability Porous medium parameter K, and time t have retarding effects. It is also seen that the magnetic field M, Thermal Radiation parameter R, Prandtl field Pr, Schmidt number Sc have reverse effects on it.

  • Functionally graded materials (FGMs) have gained substantial attention from researchers due to their exceptional strength and thermal resistance. Their utilization in the aviation and automobile industries has significantly improved the efficiency of various structural components. Moreover, stiffened panels find wide applications in aerospace and automobile structures and these panels are frequently exposed to extreme environments. It is from this perspective that our research is focused on analysing the vibroacoustic response of stiffened functionally graded panels subjected to external dynamic excitations in a thermal environment. In the present research work, a finite element model is developed to conduct the dynamic analysis of functionally graded stiffened panels using the first-order shear deformation theory. Subsequently, a boundary element based model is also developed and coupled with the finite element model to investigate the sound radiation behaviour of those panels in a thermal environment. The material properties of FG stiffened panels are considered as temperature dependent, while the thermal environment is assumed to be acting as linearly varying through the panel's thickness. The present investigation aim to compare the vibroacoustic responses of different panels due to stiffener orientations, material compositions, power law indices and plate thicknesses at various temperatures. The research findings highlight the significant impact of addition of stiffeners, its orientation and material compositions on the sound radiation characteristics of these panels under thermal environments. The present numerical model can easily be employed for analysing the sound radiation behaviour of other types of flat or curved stiffened panels having arbitrary geometry and boundary conditions.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) was crosslinked by UV irradiation in the presence of water soluble photoinitiators. The crosslinking of PVA films with 1,2,3,4-Butanetetracarboxylic acid(BTCA) and sodium phosphinate monohydrate(SPM) was also achieved via thermal curing. Different factors in the crosslinking including thermal and radiation methods were studied. Gel fraction of PVA films increased with increasing photoinitiator concentration. The maximum gel fraction on the crosslinking method was reached about 81%. The glass transition and maximum decomposition temperature improved by both thermal and radiation crosslinking.

  • The effects of crystallinity and radiation crosslinking on the physical properties of a microporous high density polyethylene (HDPE) film with Millad3988 as a nucleating agent were investigated. The pores of the HDPE film were affected by the crystallinity. The crystallinity of the HDPE films increased with increasing Millad3988 amount up to 0.1 wt% but decreased with further addition. The mechanical characteristics of the HDPE containing Millad3988 films improved with increasing irradiation dose up to 50 kGy, but decreased at 75 kGy due to severe degradation. The thermal shrinkage behavior of the HDPE films decreased with increasing radiation dose up to 50 kGy. The porosity of the stretched HDPEIMillad3988 films after ${\gamma}$-ray radiation increased with increasing y-ray radiation dose up to 50 kGy. The pores of the irradiated films were formed more easily by a stretching due to the formation of a crosslinked structure.

  • The objective of the present study is to investigate thermal diffusion and radiation effects on unsteady MHD flow past a linearly accelerated vertical porous plate with variable temperature and also with variable mass diffusion in presence of heat source or sink under the influence of applied transverse magnetic field. The fluid considered here is a gray, absorbing/emitting radiation but a non-scattering medium. At time t > 0, the plate is linearly accelerated with a velocity $u=u_0t$ in its own plane. And at the same time, plate temperature and concentration levels near the plate raised linearly with time t. The dimensionless governing equations involved in the present analysis are solved using the closed analytical method. The velocity, temperature, concentration, skin-friction, the rate or heat transfer and the rate of mass transfer are studied through graphs in terms of different physical parameters like magnetic field parameter (M), radiation parameter (R), Schmidt parameter (Sc), Soret number (So), Heat source parameter (S), Prandtl number (Pr), thermal Grashof number (Gr), mass Grashof number (Gm) and time (t).

  • This study is about the passive cooling effects of three outdoor solar shading facilities as trees, pergola with wistaria vine and membrane shading structure, which are expected to provide cool spots in the summer. Field observations of measuring thermal environment of selected facilities is executed. Thermal environment measuring was categorized as short wave radiation, long wave radiation, net radiation, globe temperature, surface temperature measured by infrared camera. Heat transfer mechanism is analyzed with overall data from field measurement. Results from this study are as below; 1) Radiation balance measured on shaded surface under membrane shading structure was 17%($86W/m^2$) of the unshaded surface radiation balance($511W/m^2$). 2) Surface temperature comparison between vegetation and membrane of the shading structure is performed at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Surface temperature of vegetation was same as air temperature and that of membrane was $5^{\circ}C$ higher than air temperature. Vegetation transpiration is considered as the causing factor which make those differences. 3) Results from this study could be used as fundamental data for reducing heat island phenomena and continuos research on this subject would be needed.

  • A novel synthetic route has been developed to prepare $\alpha$-cobalt hydroxide with intercalated nitrate anions. It was successfully synthesized by $\gamma$-ray irradiation under simple conditions, i.e., air atmosphere, without base. Under $\gamma$-ray irradiation, it leads to the formation of layered cobalt hydroxynitrate compounds which have small crystalline size and have the role of a generator of hydroxyl anion. Structural and morphological characterizations were performed by using power X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The component and thermal stability of the sample were respectively measured by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and thermal analyses, including thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA).

  • Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers have been widely used due to their unique chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. Electron beam irradiation has been extensively employed as means of altering properties of polymeric materials. Electron beam irradiation can induce chemical reactions in materials without any catalyst. Electron beam irradiation may be useful in accelerating the thermal compression stabilization of PAN nanofibers. To investigate the irradiation effect on PAN fibers, PAN nanofibers were irradiated by electron beam at 1,000~5,000 kGy. Irradiated and non-irradiated PAN nanofibers were heated at 180 and $220^{\circ}C$ without applying pressure for 15 min. Then 1 metric ton has been applied for 5 min. SEM images have been found that the fiber kept its morphological behavior after the hot pressing up to electron beam irradiated 1,000 kGy. DSC thermograms showed that the peak temperatures of the exothermic reactions were found to decrease with increasing electron beam irradiation doses and temperature. FT-IR spectra have been found to decrease $C{\equiv}N$ stretch band with increasing the electron beam irradiation dose. These results indicate that the modification of PAN via reactions such as cyclization is significantly enhanced by electron beam irradiation and thermal compression technique.

  • W-K-TiC alloys with different titanium carbide concentrations (0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2) wt.% were fabricated through Mechanical Alloying and Spark Plasma Sintering. The effects of the addition of nano-scaled TiC particles on the relative density, Vickers micro-hardness, microstructure, crystal information, thermal shock resistance, and tensile strength were investigated. It is revealed that the doped TiC nano-particles located at the grain boundaries. The relative density and Vickers micro-hardness of W-K-TiC alloys was enhanced with TiC addition and the highest Vickers micro-hardness is 731.55. As the TiC addition increased from 0.05 to 2 wt%, the room-temperature tensile strength raised from 141 to 353 MPa. The grain size of the W-K-TiC alloys decreased sharply from $2.56{\mu}m$ to 330 nm with the enhanced TiC doping. The resistance to thermal shock damage of W-K-TiC alloys was improved slightly with the increased TiC addition.
