Background: This study aimed to compare the effects of the Mulligan mobilization with movement and McKenzie exercise after applying conservative physical therapy to patients with knee pain. Methods: Patients were randomly allocatied into two groups: the Mulligan mobilization with movement (10 subjects) and the McKenzie technique (10 subjects). Each group was givenr conservative physical therapy and manual therapy sessions, three times week, for four weeks. The pain intensity was measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS). The cervical range of motion (ROM) was measured with a goniometer. Balance was measured using the modified Berg balance scale (BBS). Results: After four weeks of therapy, VAS (p<.05) decreased significantly, and ROM and balance increased siginficantly in both groups(p<.05). There was a significant improvement in knee extension (p<.05) in the McKenzie group compared to the Mulligan group. No intergroup differences were found with respect to the knee flex, VAS, and BBS (p>.05). Conclusion: The McKenzie exercises are more effective than Mulligan mobilization with movement for improving knee extension. Both interventions have the same effects on pain relief, in increasing knee flexion ROM and improving balance in patients with knee pain.

Purpose : Several studies have investigated the effects of dynamic stretching (DS) and self-mobilization (SM), however, studies comparing the two interventions are rare. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the effects of DS and SM on ankle strength, dorsiflexion range of motion (DFROM), and balance to determine which is superior. Methods : Thirty-two healthy young adults participated in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups (SM and DS). DS was performed for the purpose of stretching the medial gastrocnemius muscle. For the SM group, ankle joint SM was performed in three ways. For all participants, the following measurements were performed as pre- and post-tests: isometric strength of dorsiflexor and plantar flexor, weight-bearing lunge test (WBLT) to evaluate DFROM, Tetrax system to evaluate static balance, and y balance test (YBT) to evaluate dynamic balance. Differences before and after the intervention within each group were compared using paired t-test. Also, the variable's variation was compared between groups using an independent t-test. Results : Significant differences were found in ankle dorsiflexor strength, WBLT, YBT, weight distribution index (WDI) (pillow and opened eyes; PO), and stability index (ST) (normal and closed eyes; NC) before and after intervention in the SM group (p<.05). In the DS group, significant differences were found in ankle dorsiflexor and plantar flexor strength, WBLT, YBT anterior, WDI (normal and opened eyes; NO, PO), and ST (NO, NC, PO, pillow and closed eyes) before and after the intervention (p<.05). Ankle plantar flexor strength and WDI (PO) were significantly different between groups. Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, DS or SM can be considered as a possibility for selective use according to variables for improving ankle joint function (DFROM, muscle strength, balance).
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the immediate effects of different breathing training techniques on diaphragm excursion and vital capacity in healthy adults. Specifically, the study focused on comparing respiratory exercise without PNF, bilateral pattern respiratory exercise, and bilateral pattern with spiral pattern respiratory exercise. Methods: Twenty-seven healthy adults in their 20s participated in the study. Diaphragm excursion and vital capacity were evaluated under three different conditions. A one-way repeated ANOVA was used to analyze the differences in diaphragm excursion and vital capacity among the interventions. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed in diaphragm excursion among the interventions, comparing respiratory exercise without PNF, bilateral pattern respiratory exercise, and bilateral pattern with spiral pattern respiratory exercise. Similarly, statistically significant differences were found in vital capacity among the interventions without PNF respiratory exercise, bilateral pattern respiratory exercise, and bilateral pattern with spiral pattern respiratory exercise. Conclusion: The study demonstrated that incorporating the spiral technique in respiratory exercise led to increased diaphragm excursion and lung capacity compared to other interventions. These findings suggest that PNF respiratory exercise combined with the spiral pattern may have clinical implications for the treatment of respiratory diseases. Further research is warranted to explore the long-term effects and clinical application of these approaches.
Forward head posture (FHP) is a musculoskeletal disorder that causes neck pain. Several exercise interventions have been used in South Korea to improve craniovertebral angle (CVA) and relieve neck pain. There has been no domestic literature review study over the past 5 years that has investigated trends and effects of exercise intervention methods for CVA with neck pain. This domestic literature review aimed to evaluate the trends and effects of exercise interventions on CVA and neck pain in persons with FHP. A review of domestic literature published in Korean or English language between 2018 and 2022 was performed. Literature search was conducted on Google Scholar and Korea Citation Index by using the following keywords: "exercise," "exercise therapy," "exercise program," "forward head posture," and "neck pain." Ten studies were included in this review. All of the studies showed positive improvements after intervention programs that included exercises. Notably, four of these studies demonstrated significant differences in results between the experimental and control groups. Among the 10 studies, nine measured visual analogue scale or numerical rating scale scores and reported significant reductions in pain following interventions, including exercise programs. Five of these studies showed significant differences in results between the experimental and control groups. Furthermore, six studies that used neck disability index exhibited a significant decrease in symptoms after implementing intervention programs that included exercise, and significant differences in results were found between the experimental and control groups. This domestic literature review provides consistent evidence to support the application of various exercise intervention programs to improve CVA and relieve neck pain from FHP. Further studies are warranted to review the effects of various exercise interventions on FHP reported not only in domestic but also in international literature.
The main objectives of this study was to observe the effects of Hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the healing processes of mandibuar fracture of normal rats & streptozotocin - induced diabetic rats. Author used 120 rats (Sprague - Dawley Strain) dividing into controf (60) & experimental group (60) of normal & diabetic rats. Complete fracture was produced on the left mandibular body of 120 rats, rendered hyperbaric oxygen therapy (2 hrs, daily at 2.5 atm) on experimental group and observed effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy microscopically. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The experimental group of HBO in normal rats had the good effect until 6th week, especially the better effect at 3rd week, because of decrease of inflammatory cell infiltration, heavy proliferation of fibroblast & capillary and active callus formation. 2. The hyperbaric oxygen therapy in mandibular fracture of diabetic rats influenced especially on the healing process at 5th week, because there were much decrease of inflammatory cell infiltrations, heavy proliferation of fibroblast, capillary, osteoblasts, moderate fibrous callus formation, osteocastic activity and mild bony callus formation.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of lumbar stabilization exercise therapy on low back pain patients' lumbar spinal function. Identify the effect of stabilization exercise therapy, this study attempted to determine lumbar spinal functions, using spinoscopy, for 20 patients with low back pain This study applied lumbar stabilization exercise to 20 low back pain patients without a control group for 8 weeks and 4 times a week, and examined their spinal functions before and after the application. Data collected from the test were analyzed using Wilcoxon signed ranked test, a nonparametric test. Absolute index, functionality and performance increased significantly compared to them before treatment. FE loads and velocity control while conducting exercise tasks increased significantly compared to them before treatment. Test item ROL and ROM, which indicate the change of angle, both showed significant differences. Of stiff spine, stiff pelvic score and sprain score, which indicate the effects of the conduct of exercise tasks on the movement of the spine, stiff spine score and sprain score showed significant differences. According to the results as presented above, lumbar stabilization exercise may be greatly helpful in improving low back pain patients' lumbar spinal functions.
Purpose : To exam the effects of active ankle range of motion(ROM) exercise on sciatic nerve movement and provide the evidence that use it to patients with hypomobile sciatic nerve as a nerve mobilization technique. Methods : The subjects consist of 32 asymptomatic healthy adults(male; 15, female; 17) who have limited passive straight leg raising(PSLR) ranges below 70 degrees. First, examiner measures PSLR angles at three times. Then, subject was instructed perform the active ankle ROM exercise(dorsiflexion and plantarflextion) at limited angle. After each subject completed the active ankle ROM exercise, return the starting position and examiner measures the PSLR angles at three times again. Results : First, PSLR range was no significant differences between dominant and non-dominant leg(p >.05). Second, active ankle ROM exercise significantly increased PSLR range by mean of degrees(p <.05). Third, there was no learning effects among the measurement trials(p >.05). Conclusion : These data show that active ankle ROM exercise can mobilize the sciatic nerve. Therefore, it can be applied to patients with hypomobile sciatic nerve(sliding dysfunction) as a neural mobilization technique.
Background: The new type of diabetes treatment, SGLT2 inhibitors, has been approved for monotherapy and combination therapy, but medical insurance is only allowed in combination therapy with metformin, which is the first choice for type 2 diabetes treatment. Methods: The SGLT2 inhibitors prescribed in Korea are dapagliflozin, empagliflozin and ipragliflozin. A review was conducted using Pubmed to evaluate efficacy and safety for these medications with metformin combination therapy. 10 studies were selected by searching for keywords and related references and were reviewed in full. The mechanism of action, pharmacokinetics, and the economics of treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors were examined. Results: SGLT2 inhibitors had moderate glycemic control when added to the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes who were not being regulated by metformin monotherapy. They also showed positive effects such as weight loss, as well as the lowering of blood pressure. Hypotension and serious side effects were relatively low. However, the risk of genital infection was increased. Conclusion: The SGLT2 inhibitors are a new class of drugs that promote glucose excretion in the urine. They are a good choice for combination therapy with metformin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, with weight loss and very low risk of serious side effects.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of laughter therapy on mood, state anxiety, and serum cortisol based on a Stress-Coping Model for preoperative breast cancer patients. Methods: The study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 40 breast cancer patients who were admitted to one general hospital for surgery in 2009 (experimental group 23, control group 17). The experimental group received one hour laughter therapy consisting of dance, lots of laughter techniques, and meditation. Results: The mean ages were 47 years (experimental group) and 49 years (control group). There were no significant differences in demographic and disease-related characteristics between the two groups. After the intervention, the scores of mood and state-anxiety of experimental group were significantly improved than those of control group. However, no difference was found in serum cortisol. Conclusion: The laughter therapy was partially effective in improving stress response in patients with breast cancer. Further research is needed to develop and evaluate the longer periods of interventions to testify the effects on serum cortisol, and other biochemical variables.
This study was performed that how phonophoresis using ultrasound for piroxicam affects transdermal permeation and anti-inflammative effects. Transdermal permeation study conducted by using hairless mouse had two categories: control group and ultrasound group. Transdermal permeation was observed according to duty cycle and intensity. Anti-inflammatory effects were determined using in Sprague-Dawley rat. The subjects were divided into three groups of six SD rat each 24 hour, 48 hour, 72 hour. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Transdermal permeation of piroxicam was measured according to ultrasound duty cycle. This research demonstrates that ultrasound group retains more transdermal permeation than control group, and that pulsed ultrasound group holds a little more transdermal permeation than continuous ultrasound group. 2. The transdermal permeation of piroxicam is closely related with ultrasound intensity. Effect of each group of transdermal permeation was significant rises in proportion to ultrasound intensity. 3. By observing inflammation of the tissue caused by trauma, phonophoresis group showed more significant of anti-inflammatory effect. The conclusion of phonophoresis was found to improve significantly the transdermal permeation and the anti-inflammatory effect.
