  • For a stable water supply, it is necessary to consider the present unusual change in the weather, seasonal variation of water use, and the frequency and duration of low flow. Therefore, in this study, a theoretical background of specific probability distribution type and the reliability of frequency analysis for the time series of low flow data was investigated and programmed to support the operation of multipurpose dam.

  • In this study, we report an investigation for the charging and collection of aerosol nanoparticles in an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) according to particle charging and diffusion effects. The competition between charging probability and diffusion effect determines the collection efficiency of nanoparticles in the ESP. In conclusion, collection efficiency continuously decreased with the reduction in the particle size. This indicates that poor partial charging effect of nanoparticles is more dominant than their diffusion effect in the ESP for the nanoparticles in the particle size range of 4-20 nm. Theoretical calculations using a unipolar diffusion charing theory were in good agreement with the experimental data for the nanoparticles less than 20 nm in diameter.

  • The fractal space is often associated with natural phenomena with many length scales and the functions defined on this space are usually not differentiable. First we define a $\sigma$-multifractal from $\sigma$-iterated function systems with probability. We introduce the measure derivative through the invariant measure of the $\sigma$-multifractal. We show that the non-differentiable function on the $\sigma$-multifractal can be differentiable with respect to this measure derivative. We apply this result to some examples of ordinary differential equations and diffusion processes on $\sigma$-multifractal spaces.

  • The operation and management of a plant require proper accounting for the constraints coming from reliability requirements as well as from budget and resource considerations. Most of the mathematical methods to decide the inspection time interval for plant maintenance by reliability theory are too complicated to be solved. Moreover, the mathematical and theoretical models are not usually cases in the practical applications. In order to overcome these problems, we propose a new the decision-making method of optimal inspection interval to minimize the maintenance cost by reliability theory and genetic algorithm (GA). The most merit of the proposed method is to decide the inspection interval for a plant machine of which failure rate $\lambda$(t) conforms to any probability distribution. Therefore, this method is more practical. The efficiency of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results obtained by GA-based method with the inspection model haying regular time interval.

  • This paper deals with cross impact analysis for technology assessment. The focus of the paper is to develop new technique of cross impact matrix using goal programming method. In this study, the idea of cross impact analysis based on scenario generation method especially SMIC-74 (2) is expanded. Critical literature review on SMIC-74 is presented to discuss the mathematical rationale of consistent probability in cross impact analysis. A new model of cross impact analysis using goal programming to overcome the shortcomings of the scenario generation technique especially SMIC-74 is developed. This new technique is also applied to the assessment of the air pollution problems in Seoul Metropolitan area in Korea. The results of analysis give us following findings 1) Cross impact analysis using goal programming produce more meaningful solutions comparing to those of SMIC-74 2) Theoretical rationale of the objective function in the newly developed technique is more appropriate than that of SMIC-74.

  • A very large floating structure has rather small motion characteristics as to the whole body, while the motion at end part of such structure becomes largest due to the elastic motion of the structure. This paper presents on the theoretical result on the relative motion characteristics and green water phenomena of VLFS in waves This phenomena affect not only to strength of the structure but also the determination of depth of structure. To predict motion responses of structure in regular waves, the source-dipole distribution method and F.E.M is used By irregular wave results, the probability of occurrence of green water and response of the structure were calculated.

  • In this paper, the normalized variable V=(log N-B)(log ${\Delta}{\sigma}-C$-C), as derived from the probabilistic S-N field of Castillo and Canteli, is taken as a reference for calculation of damage accumulation and probability of failure using the Miner number in scenarios of variable amplitude loading. Alternative damage measures, such as the classical Miner and logarithmic Miner, are also considered for comparison between theoretical lifetime prediction and experimental data. The suitability of this approach is confirmed for it provides safe lifetime prediction when applied to fatigue data obtained for riveted joints made of a puddle iron original from the Fao bridge, as well as for data from experimental programs published elsewhere carried out for different materials (aluminium and concrete specimens) under distinct variable loading histories.

  • We have studied the statistical properties of turbulence in molecular clouds identified in the Boston University - Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (BU-FCRAO) Galactic Ring Survey (GRS). Toward this end, the probability density function (PDF) and velocity distribution were measured for about 50 molecular clouds. We found there exists a good correlation between the PDF width and the velocity dispersion for these molecular clouds. In order to investigate how general properties of astrophysical turbulence depends on the plasma parameters such as magnetic field strength and sonic Mach number, we performed three-dimensional MHD simulations. We then examined if the observed characteristics of interstellar turbulence are consistent with theoretical results from MHD simulations.

  • In this paper the effect of specimen thickness on fatigue crack growth with the spatial distribution of material properties is presented. Basically, the material resistance to fatigue crack growth is treated as a spatial stochastic process, which varies randomly on the crack surface. The theoretical autocorrelation functions of fatigue crack growth resistance with specimen thickness are discussed for several correlation lengths. Constant ${\Delta}K$ fatigue crack growth tests were also performed on CT type specimens with three different thicknesses of BS 4360 steel. Applying the proposed stochastic model and statistical analysis procedure, the experimental data were analyzed for different specimen thicknesses for determining the autocorrelation functions and probability distributions of the fatigue crack growth resistance.

  • In this paper, an approach to reduce the common-mode voltage and to eliminate narrow pulse for implemented AC-DC matrix converters is presented. An improved space vector modulation (SVM) strategy is developed by replacing the zero space vectors with suitable pairs of active ones. Further, while considering the commutation time, the probability of narrow pulse in the conventional and proposed SVM methods are derived and compared. The advantages of the proposed scheme include: a 50% reduction in the peak value of the common-mode voltage; improved input and output performances; a reduction in the switching loss by a reduced number of switching commutations and a simplified implementation via software. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the correctness of the theoretical analysis, as well as the feasibility of the proposed strategy.
