  • In this study, dynamic response of a vertical shaft subjected to seismic loads was evaluated by three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) approach. The emphasis was on quantifying the ground conditions, input motions and direction of motions. A series of parametric analyses were carried out. From the results of FE analysis, more than 1.7 times increase in shear force and bending moment is obtained when the stiff layer was thinker than the soft layer. And all of the maximum values were occurred near the interface between the soil layers. The dynamic behavior of vertical shaft was significantly influenced by the different frequencies of the input motion, and normalized acceleration of surrounding soil was 3 times larger than vertical shaft.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of joint kinetics and coordination on within-individual differences in maximum vertical jump. 10 male subjects aged 20 to 30 performed six trials in maximum vertical jump and with based on jump height the good(GP) and bad(BP) performances for each subject were compared on joint kinetics of lower extremity and coordination parameters such as joint reverse and relative phase. The results showed that maximum moment, power, and work done of hip joint and maximum moment of ankle joint in GP were significantly higher than that in the BP but no significant differences for the knee joint. We could observe a significant difference in joint reverse timing between both conditions. And also the relative phase on ankle-knee and ankle-hip in GP were significantly lower than that in the BP, which means that in GP joint movements were more in-phase synchronized mode. In conclusion, mechanical outputs of hip and ankle joints had an effect on within-individual differences in vertical jump and the inter-joint coordination and coordination including sequence and timing of joint motion also might be high influential factors on the performances within individual.

  • Vertical axillary muscle sparing thoracotomy is newly appeared and excellent alternative method of standard posterolateral thoracotomy. It has many advantages compared to standard posterolateral thoracotomy , less postoperative pain, well preserved thoracic muscle strength, full range of motion of the shoulder girdle and attractive cosmetic results. We performed vertical axillary muscle sparing thoracotomy in 36 patients from November 1993 to July 1994. The ages of the patients ranged from 6 months to 71 years[mean 45.1 years , and the patients consisted of 20 males and 16 females. The preoperative diagnosis were as follows : lung cancer in 17 patients, tbc destroyed lung in 7, bronchiectasis in 3, bullous emphysema in 3 and the others are mediastinal tumor, bronchogenic cyst, lung abscess, empyema, esophageal diverticulum, and CCAM [congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation . The operative procedures were as follows : lobectomy and bilobectomy in 16 patients, segmentectomy in 4, wedge resection in 3, penumonectomy in 7, and the others were open biopsy, lobectomy with diaphragm excision, sleeve right upper lobectomy, decortication, mediastinal mass excision, and esophageal diverticulectomy. We had 6 complications : postoperative bleeding in 2 cases, operative wound infection, arrrhythmia[atrial fibrillation , Horner`s syndrome, hoarseness. The subcutaneous seroma occurred in 4 cases but did not require drainage and relieved within 4 weeks spontaneously. We concluded that vertical axillary muscle sparing thoracotomy could be done in most of all thoracic surgery with safety. Comparing to standard posterolateral thoracotomy vertical axillary muscle sparing thoracotomy has many advantages such as less postoperative pain, well preserved muscle strengths and good cosmetic results.

  • The linear traffic model(Vertical queueing model) that is adopted widely in traffic flow estimation assumes that all vehicles have the identical motion before joining a queue at the stop-line. Thus, a queue is supposed to form vertically not horizontally. Due to the simplicity of this model, the departure time of the leading vehicle is assumed to coincide with the start of effective green time. Thus, the delay estimates given by the Vertical queueing model is not always realistic. This paper explores a microscopic traffic model(a Kinematic Car-following model at Signalised intersections: a KCS traffic model) based on the one dimensional Kinematic equations in physics. A comparative evaluation in delay and sensitivity of delay difference between the KCS traffic model and the previously known Vertical queueing model is presented. The results show that the delay estimate in the Vertical queueing model is always greater than or equal to the KCS traffic model; however, the sensitivity of delay in the KCS traffic model is greater than the Vertical queueing model.

  • In this paper, the localized finite element method(LFEM) is applied to 3-dimensional ship motion problems in water of infinite depth. The LFEM used here is based on the functional constructed by Bai & Yeung(1974). To test the present numerical scheme, a few vertical axisymmetric bodies are treated by general 3-dimensional formulation. The computed results of hydrodynamic coefficients for a few vertical spheroids and vertical circular cylinders show good agreement with results obtained by others. The advantages of the present numerical method compared with the method of integral equation are as follows; (i) The cumbersome existence of irregular frequencies in the method of conventional integral equation is removed. (ii) The final matrix is banded and symmetric and the computation of the matrix elements is comparatively easier, whereas the size of the matrix in the present scheme is much larger. (iii) In the future research, it is possible to accommodate with the nonlinear exact free surface boundary condition in the localized finite element subdomain, whereas the linear solution is assumed in the truncated(far field) subdomain.

  • The motion of a fluid in the closed annular cavity formed by two concentric vertical cylinders with externally finned tube has been analysed by a numerical solutions of the equation of momentum and energy. For the calculation procedure, the fluid is assumed to have constant thermo-dynamic and transporties except for the density, which is temperature-dependent in the buoyancy term of the vertical momentum equation (Boussinesq approximation). The govern ins equations for velocity and temperature are solved by a finite difference technique which incoorporates a scheme for treating the coupled variables. Results are presented for a range of the Rayleigh number and for various values of the fin height and the number of fins.

  • Stress distribution under a driving lugged wheel was obtained by photoelastic method. The distribution showed two distinct parts, one part is due to sinkage and other due to compression. Results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. The tangential reactions of sinkage as well as compressing parts were directly proportional to tangential load to the driving wheel, that's appeared to be thrust of the driving wheel. The normal reactions of both sinkage and compressing parts were directly proportional to the vertical load to the driving wheel, that's appeared to be resistance against wheel motion. 2. When the tangential load was constant, changing the vertical load did not show any significant thrust variation of the driving wheel. 3. Under the condition of this experiment, the ratio of vertical load to tangential load (T.L/V.L) must be greater than 1.0 in order for the wheel to roll.
