  • The purpose of this study was to examine the bidirectional relationship between the negative emotionality of 0-to 3-year-old and maternal parenting styles, focusing on warmth and reactivity. Four waves of panel data from the Korean Children Panel Study(KCPS) were analyzed in this study by means of autoregressive cross-lagged modeling. The results of this study were as follows. First, negative emotionality and maternal parenting styles were consistently stable for 0-to 3-year-old. Second, a bidirectional relationship between negative emotionality and maternal warmth parenting styles was confirmed according to the appearance of both parent and child effects. In other words, higher levels of negative emotionality was associated with lower maternal warmth parenting styles across time and in both directions. Additionally, the relationship between negative emotionality and maternal reactivity parenting styles were partially identified as being bidirectional in nature, whilst also being related to age. These findings suggested that parent education aimed at strengthening parenting skills, and programs designed to relieve negative emotionality of 0-to 3-year-olds are clearly needed.

  • The relation of children's stress-coping styles to Risk of Internet Gaming Addiction(RIGA) was examined in 662 4th, 5th and 6th grade subjects. Results showed that active coping styles were negatively but aggressive and passive/avoidant coping styles were positively related to RIGA. In male students, coping styles of "active" and "passive/avoidant", "aggressive" influenced RIGA factors of "maladaptive behaviors" and "negative emotional experience". In female students, coping styles of seeking social support related positively to RIGA; coping styles of "active", "passive/avoidant", and "aggressive" influenced "maladaptive behaviors", "negative emotional experience", and coping styles of "active" and "passive/avoidant", "seeking social support" influenced "low academic attitude", RIGA factors, respectively. Coping styles of "active", "passive/avoidant", "aggressive", and "seeking-social-support" influenced "psychological absorption and fixation".

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parenting styles between generations and the comparative effects of grandfathers' and grandmothers' parenting styles on the parenting styles of parents. The subjects were 299 mothers and fathers of children aged between 2 and 5 years old who attend 9 preschools in Seoul. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficients and multiple regressions. The results show that a strong relationship exists between grandparents' parenting styles and the parenting styles of parents as grandparents' parenting styles predict parents' positive and negative parenting styles. It was also found that the influence of grandmothers' parenting styles on the parenting styles of mothers is stronger than that of grandfathers' parenting styles, but less influence of grandfathers' parenting styles on fathers' parenting styles exists.

  • The present study investigated maternal parenting stress trajectories, using data gathered from the Korean Children Panel Survey. Four factors-monthly income, maternal depression levels, infants' negative emotionality, marital conflict-which were taken from reports made by the mothers' used in this study, were examined as predictors of maternal parenting stress trajectories. The effects of maternal parenting stress trajectories, parenting styles and toddlers' peer interruptive behaviors were also examined. The findings were as follows: First, maternal parenting stress trajectories somewhat increased from the 1st year period to the 4th year period. Second, infants' negative emotionality and marital conflict within the first year were observed to have a connection to the initial level and slope of maternal parenting stress trajectories. Third, maternal parenting stress trajectories predicted positive parenting styles, and parenting styles had a longitudinal impact on toddlers' peer interruptive behaviors at the 5th year period.

  • This study examined how the attachment styles of married mothers influence their marital conflicts and caring behavior and the behavior problems of their children. Subjects were 60 mothers and their 60 elementary school children. Data were analyzed with correlation, multiple analysis of variance and path analysis. Mothers with unstable attachment styles had more children with behavior problems and they had more serious marital conflicts. Mother's with preoccupied attachment styles experienced more marital conflict than all other styles. Seriousness of marital conflict was related to negative caring behavior and negative caring behavior was related to behavior problems in children. There were direct paths between the attachment style of mothers and both externalized and internalized behavior problems of children in the clinical group.

There were significant differences on four variables according to the satisfaction of a nursing major. Stress had a significant positive correlation with depression, and a negative correlation with problem focused coping and satisfaction of clinical practice. Depression had a significant negative correlation with satisfaction of clinical practice. Emotional focused coping had a significant positive correlation with depression, and problem focused coping had a significant negative correlation with depression. • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between ego- resilience and stress coping styles of adolescents. The study also tried to identify differences on stress coping styles based on the level of ego- resilience of adolescents. Ego-resilience showed positive correlations with problem-focused and social support seeking coping styles and a negative correlation with an emotion-focused coping style. Canonical Correlation analysis revealed that self-confidence among four sub-domains of ego-resilience made the most outstanding contributions in predicting stress coping styles of adolescents. The problem-focused coping style had the highest correlation with ego-resilience among the four coping styles. The group of adolescents who had a higher level of ego-resilience reported more problem-focused and social support-seeking coping styles in stressful situations. The results of this study suggested that development of ego-resilience of adolescents who were in the midst of transitions and adjustment problems was important for effective coping strategies.

  • This study examined the relationships between parenting styles, academic achievement, and behavioral adjustment of adolescents in Korea. Using a sample of 181 parents and their children (13-15 years old), parents completed the Parental Authority Questionnaire and adolescents filled out the Youth Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and provided their school grades. Factor analysis was conducted on the PAQ to confirm the psychometric properties. Hierarchical regression analysis was computed to determine the relationship between maternal and paternal parenting styles, academic performance, and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Regression analysis revealed that mother's authoritative parenting style was positively related with adolescents' grades in English. However, father's permissive was negatively related with adolescents' grades in English, Mathematics, and Science. Mother's permissive parenting styles showed negative effects of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems whereas father's permissive parenting styles showed positive effects of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems.
