This paper proposes a robust posture stabilization control method for wheeled mobile robots. To solve the robust posture stabilization, we introduce reference generation mode, reference tracking mode, and reference regulation mode. In reference generation mode, a kinematic time-invariant controller is used to generate the reference trajectory which starts from the initial posture of the actual robot to the desired posture. In reference tracking mode, a sliding mode position controller is employed in such a way that the actual robot can follow the reference trajectory in the desired forward or backward moving direction, even in the presence of the disturbances in the dynamics. In reference regulation mode, a sliding mode heading direction controller is used such that the actual robot can maintain the desired posture against the disturbances. In this way, robust posture stabilization can be achieved at almost all global regions.
The studies of the half active suspension have been performed using various suspension models. In the early days, the modeling considered the inputs to the active suspension as the linear forces. Recently, due to the development of new control theory, the forces input to the half car active suspension system has been replaced by an actual input to the hydraulic actuators. Therefore, the dynamic of the active suspension system now consists of the dynamic of half car suspension system plus the dynamic of the hydraulic actuators. This paper proposed a new modeling technique in integrating both dynamic models. The proportional integral sliding mode control technique is utilized to control the hydraulically actuated of the half car active suspension system. The performance of the half car hydraulically actuated active suspension system is simulated with a bump input. The results show that the proposed modeling technique and the proportional integral sliding mode controller are improved the ride comfort and ride handling of the half car active suspension system.
This paper proposes a new speed and flux estimation method which has the robustness against the variation of the electrical parameters of the motor and the superiority in the dynamic characteristics. In the proposed method, the stator currents and the rotor fluxes are observed on the stationary reference frame using the sliding mode concept. And the rotor speed is estimated using the current estimation errors and the observed rotor fluxes based on the Lyapunov stability theory. Also a design method of the observer gain is proposed to minimize the effect of the speed estimation error on the rotor flux observation. The experimental results are shown to verify that the proposed method shows the excellent performances under the variations of motor resistance and inductance.
Unlike normal wheels, the Mecanum wheel enables omni-directional movement regardless of the orientation of a mobile robot. In this paper, a robust trajectory tracking control method is developed based on the dynamic model of the Mecanum wheel mobile robot in order that the mobile robot can move along the given path in the environment with disturbance. The method is designed using the impedance control to make the mobile robot to track the path, and the integral sliding mode control for robustness to disturbance. The good performance of the proposed method is verified using the MATLAB /Simulink simulation and also through the experiment on an actual Mecanum wheel mobile robot. In both the simulation and the experimentation, we make the mobile robot move along a reference trajectory while maintaining the robot's orientation at a constant angle to see the characteristics of the Mecanum wheel.
In this paper, sliding mode control (SMC) is designed and applied to an elastic structure to suppress some of its vibration modes. The system is an elastic beam clamped on one end and the designed controller uses only the deflection measurement of the free end. The infinite dimensional mathematical model of the beam is reduced to an ordinary differential equation set to represent the behavior of required modes. Since the states of the finite dimensional model are not physically measurable quantities, an observer is designed to estimate these states by measuring the tip deflection of the beam. The performance of the observer is important because the observed states are used in the SMC design. In this study, by using the output information, an observer is designed and tested to estimate the states of the finite dimensional model of the beam. Then the designed SMC is applied to the experimental beam system which gives satisfactory suppressed vibrations.
A novel hybrid control scheme to actively control the endpoint position of a very flexible single-link manipulator is proposed. The control scheme consists of a motor mounted at the beam hub and a piezofilm actuator bonded to the surface of the flexible link. The control torque of the motor to produce a desired motion is firstly determined by employing the sliding mode control theory on the equation of motion of the rigid link having the same mass as that of the proposed flexible link. The torque is then applied to the flexible manipulator in order to activate the commanded motion. During the motion, undesirable oscillation is actively suppressed by applying a feedback control voltage to the piezofilm actuator. Consequently, the imposed desired position is accomplished. In order to demonstrate high control performances accrued from the proposed method, computer simulations are undertaken by treating both regulating and tracking control problems.

In this paper, the standard Dole, Glover, Khargoneker, and Francis (abbr. : DGKF 1989) H\ulcorner controller (H\ulcornerC) is extended to the nonlinear feedback linearization-H\ulcorner/sliding mode controller (NFL-H\ulcorner/SMC), to tackle the problem of the unmeasurable state variables as in the conventional SMC, to obtain smooth control as the linearized controller in a linear system, and to improve the time-domain performance under a worst scenario. The proposed controller is obtained by combining the H\ulcorner estimator with the nonlinear feedback linearization-sliding mode controller (NFL-SMC) and it does not need to measure all the state variables as in the traditional SMC. The proposed controller is applied as a nonlinear power system stabilizer (PSS) for the improvement of the power system damping characteristics of an single machine infinite bus system (SMIBS) connected through a double circuit line. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified by nonlinear time-domain simulation in case of a 3-cycle line-to-ground fault and in case of the parameter variations for the AVR gain K\ulcorner and for the inertia moment M.
This paper presents a dynamic modeling and a sliding mode controller for the high-speed/high-accuracy position control system. The selected target system is the wire bonder assembly which is used in the semiconductor assembly process. This system is a reciprocating one around the pivot point that consists of VCM(voice coil motor) as an actuator and transducer horn as a bonding tool. For the modeling elements, the sys-tem is divided into electrical circuit, magnetic circuit and mechanical system. Each system is modeled using the bond graph method and united into the full system. Two major aims are considered in the design of the controller. The first one is that the horn must track the given reference trajectory. The second one is that the controller must be realizable by using the DSP board. Computer simulation and experimental results show that the designed sliding mode controller provides better performance than the PID controller.
