Developing Active Role of Science Museum in Educating on Ethical Issues on Science and Technology: Four Case Studies

  • The purpose of this study was to examine a) each of the selected science museums for its role in educating on ethical issues in science and technology, b) what are the most frequently dealt ethical themes in science and technology; c) how were those themes presented (via exhibition, play, panel, movies, etc); and d) identify common characteristics in the selected science museums' presentations of ethical issues. The results indicated that selected museums present ethical issues related to technology development, mainly on biotechnology and environmental issues. The type of presentations dealing with ethical issues most frequently were exhibitions, panels and simulations, followed by demonstrations and lectures. All of the selected museums had common characteristics for actively taking an educational role in ethical issues in science. The study suggests that efforts to communicate the ethical issues in various areas should be reinforced to educate students and the public, and that it may be the museum's role to expose ethical aspects of technology related to human rights, dignity, health and development issues from the early stage of its development.

지역사회 협력기반 과학문화 활성화를 위한 과학관의 역할 제고 (Enhancing the Role of Science Museums to Promote Community Cooperation-Based Science Culture)

  • 이 연구는 과학관의 새로운 역할을 소개하는 것이다. 이 연구에 국내에서는 7개, 국외에서는 4개의 대표할만한 과학관의 과학문화 실무자들이 참여하여 설문에 응답하였다. 우선 과학관에서 실시하고 있는 과학문화프로그램은 무엇이 있는지, 그 프로그램이 성공적인지 실패인지, 실패라면 실패의 개선책이 무엇이 있는지 파악하였다. 이를 토대로 국내의 과학관의 이상적이고 현실적인 지역사회 협력기반 과학문화 프로그램을 개발하게 하였고 이로 인한 새로운 과학관의 역할을 탐색하였다. 현재 실시하는 과학문화 프로그램의 경우는 성공적인 것과 그렇지 않은 것은 홍보에 따른 관람객들의 참여가 가장 큰 변수였으며, 개선사항으로도 홍보의 중요성에 대해서 언급하였다. 성공적인 지역사회 협력기반 과학문화 프로그램을 위해서는 적극적인 홍보, 사전 운영팀, 전담 인력, 개방적 생각, 목적이 같은 타 기관의 선정, 양쪽 기관의 의지, 경제적인 지원 스폰서를 중요한 변수라 하겠다. 국내 과학관의 경우, 실질적으로 프로그램을 개발 및 운영한 결과 성공적인 협력기반 프로그램은 같은 지역의 타기관과의 협력, 서로 상생(win-win)연계, 그리고 이를 담당하는 전력인력이 중요한 변수로 작용하였고, 참여하는 과학관의 지역적 강점을 최대한 살린 것임을 보여주었다. 21세기에 기대되는 과학문화 프로그램은 지역 인적 물리적 인프라를 최대한 사용하고, 시민들의 요구를 반영하고, 지역사회에서 주도적으로 거점 역할을 하고, 협력기반 전문인력을 양성하며, 정부나 그 지역의 지자체와 원활한 소통을 할 수 있는 과학관에 의해 가능하다고 할 수 있겠다.

독일 현대미술관 연구 (A study of museum of contemporary art in Germany)

  • This research is on the characteristics and roles of important cities of Germany based on the history of the modern art museum and its possessions. Especially, it is focusing on the modern art museums in the western Germany including Dusseldorf, Koln, and Frankfrut that have shown economic recovery from the Miracle of Rhine; the capital city of Germany, Berlin, as well as Munich, the second capital city of Germany. Here, it harmonizes with the tradition of the past and simultaneously, it spreads the concept and role of the new museum as a forerunner. After the WWII, this is the most active of supporting investment for art museums and authors from the economic development. Also, it represents Germany with its national promotion of culture and arts. The modern art museums of Germany emphasize the mission that they exist for the people and the nation as well as creation of new art culture. These art museums working for national culture and art development do not simply collect and preserve arts. They induce active involvement from the public and keep in mind of national objectives. Here, art museums become and educational setting for the people and a room for new art culture. This research is on Germany modern art museum and it is composed of important 'public institutions' of Germany that critically influence the growth of world-renown authors. After the unification of Germany, Munchen and the western region became an important places centering around new Berlin modern art museum. They are the best places that show the national objectives and regional characteristics. Also, there are art museum educational curriculum and open space for the people by explaining exhibition plans and contents. Furthermore, there are two characteristics of German modern art museums that are noteworthy. Firstly, there are Berlin's Neue Nationalgalerie, Munchen's Pinakothek de Moderne, and Dusseldorf's 'K20' (Kunstsammlung N-Westfalen K20) that are the roots of modern art. These modern art museums exhibit popular author's collection repeatedly. This has a tendency to standardize audiences' view or to make audiences bored. It is becoming more like a trend for art work to appear and disappear. Despite these problems, German modern art museums play a critical role for a new cultural art creation and for the national identity by attempting to show the works of domestic authors as well as an intensive collection of world-renown authors' works. Secondly, there is a role as a new art museum to work together with people. It strives to continuously educate difficult modem arts, exhibits in an open space stimulating interest, participation, and conversations. From these roles, Hamburger Bahnhof Museum fur Gegenwart or Dusseldorf's 'K21, Frankfurt Museum $f\"{u}r$ Moderne Kunst, $Kf\"{o}ln$ Museum Ludwig are given new attention. Here, they emphasize the importance of communicating with the audiences and provides experiences that are different from the original spaces by showing the architecture tecture style of the art museum. In conclusion, German modern art museums attempt various changes by connecting to art education. With art museum activities, there forms a connection between arts and the lives of people, and from this, creative cultural art focused on the art museum borns. This is not only limited to Germany, the U.S., etc. We, too, should pay attention to new art culture creation from changes of role and function of modern art museums.

Marketing for Real and Virtual Museums: A marketing Model to Explain Visitor Behavior in Real Museums and an Outlook on its Applicability to Virtual Museums

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain more insight into the explanation and prognosis of consumer behavior in real and virtual museums. The analysis focuses on the influence of the museum environment on the museum patrons (rather than on the influence of the art objects). On the basis of the emotional approach to environmental psychology by Mehrabian and Russell (1974), a behavior model has been developed for museums. The model, which is based on the emotional variables pleasure, arousal and dominance (PAD), is also enhanced by cognitive variabies (learning attractiveness, education standard and information demand). The enhancement of the classical model was necessary because cognitive variables play a major role in cultural institutions such as museums: One important objective of museums is the communication of cultural knowledge to visitors. The model is tested empirically using structural equation modeling. 301 visitors were interviewed individually. Two different museum environments were represented using visual stimuli. The theoretical model for museums can be proved empirically. The degree to which the model fits the empirical data was extensively tested. The model showed high compatibility with the data and could be accepted. The study proves that a model can be developed, which explains visitor behavior in museums. The model shows museum designers how museums should be designed to be both emotionally appealing and a learning environment. Based on empirical studies in virtual stores on the Internet, it is discussed whether the research findings in these environments may be applied to virtual museum environments. In order to create an emotionally appealing virtual museum, it is recommended that one uses a 3-dimensional representation to offer various possibilities for interaction and to create a multi-sensual environment that appears highly realistic.

디자인 진흥 기관으로서의 디자인 박물관 (The Design Museum as a Promoter)

  • 1852년 영국 런던에 세계 최초의 디자인 박물관이 설립된 이후, 디자인 박물관의 상업화와 권력화에 대한 비판에도 불구하고 서구 디자인 선진국들은 디자인 박물관을 중심으로 디자인 산업을 보호하고 육성함으로써 디자인 정체성을 확립하고 그 우수성을 홍보하며 국가 경쟁력과 삶의 질을 향상시켜왔다. 21세기 문화 경제 시대를 맞아 고부가 가치를 창출하는 디자인의 중요성에 대한 인식이 높아짐에 따라 한국 디자인 발전을 주도할 디자인 박물관 설립에 대한 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 본 연구는 디자인 박물관 관련 연구가 미비한 현 상황에 한국 디자인 박물관 설립을 위한 기초연구로서, 시간축을 중심으로 수직적인 통시적 접근을 통해 해외 디자인 박물관이 디자인 발전을 위해 어떠한 역할을 수행하여 왔는지를 살펴보고, 수평적인 공시적 접근을 통해 현재 디자인 박물관이 성공적인 역할 수행을 위해 어떠한 활동을 하고 있는지를 알아봄으로서 한국 디자인 박물관의 역할과 방향을 제시하였다.

과학관 수업 분석을 통해 알아본 예비 과학 교사의 비형식 교육에 대한 인식 (Discourse Analysis of Pre-service Science Teachers and Students in Science Museums and Its Implication for Teacher Education)

  • This study examined pre-service science teachers' perceptions of informal learning by adopting a discourse analysis method suggested by Mortimer and Scott(2003). The guiding research questions were: (1) What are some general patterns of the discourse occurring in science museums between a teacher and a student? (2) In what ways do the pre-service teachers perceive informal learning and teacher's role in informal settings? The 7 pre-service science teachers participated in this study. Each of them shepherd an elementary student around the museum and implemented their own instruction using a pre-planed lesson plan. Results indicated that even though the teachers had learned some characteristics of informal teaming in their college courses, they tended to implement their traditional view of science teaming into the instruction and the view affected them to set up their teaching purposes and contents, and to select communicative approach, patterns of discourse and ways of intervention.

전시시나리오구조 유형별 관람행동특성에 관한 연구 - 자연과학계박물관을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Characteristics of Viewing Behaviors by the Composition Type Exhibition Scenarios - Focused on Natural Science Museums -)

  • The purposes of natural science museums are to educate the general public on the principles and application of science, and help them understand various aspects of science technology. Data should be analyzed by considering these educational aspects of exhibition, and the methods of presenting exhibits should be decided. Accordingly, the composition of exhibition contents with various exhibition elements has an important role at natural science museums. The relation and structure of exhibition themes are significant factors in helping visitors understand the principles of science and a system of viewing circulation can be used as an important tool for understanding the flow of exhibition. In other words, at the planning stage for the composition of exhibition contents, the relation of exhibition themes as well as the circulation patterns of viewers can induce active viewing behaviors. Therefore, centering on the patterns of viewing circulation as well as on the connectivity of exhibition themes at natural science museums, the purposes of this research are: 1) to conceptualize the composition of exhibition contents; and 2) to find elements that can induce active viewing behaviors by analyzing visitors' viewing behaviors. This research was establishing an analytical indicator of contact for viewing behaviors observed from the composition of exhibition scenarios, the active viewing patterns of engagement, first contact, and repeated contact were analyzed. First, a composition pattern with a high participation rate, in contact with exhibits, was found to induce an overall-viewing circulation and have a big ring of the composition of exhibition themes. Second, by inducing a partial-viewing circulation pattern, a high rate of first contacts was observed from a ring pattern of theme connection. Even for the structure with theme connection with depth, a high frequency of contacts with various exhibits was found when exhibition themes have a ring pattern. Third, the repeated contacts were mostly found in the form of scenarios, which has a successive structure of ring and cross patterns.

시민을 위한 공학교육 모델 개발에 대한 연구 - 이공계 대학과 과학관의 연계 프로그램을 중심으로 - (A Study on Engineering Education Model for Citizen - Focusing on the Connection Program Between Colleges of Science and Engineering and Science Museums -)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose a strategy model for engineering education for citizen through the connection between colleges of science and engineering and science museums as a way to achieve citizen science. For this model, the role of universities was redefined as social contributions through engineering education from the perspective of knowledge triangle and university entrepreneurship. In addition, the science museum was re-examined as an engineering education platform and selected as an institution that supports the contribution of colleges to society. For practical model development, the connection types of these two institutions were analyzed as case studies and interview to collect opinions from experts in the science museum. In this process, convergence education content development, reinforcement of college-science museum linkage, infrastructure construction, development of college resource utilization plans, and maintenance and expansion of educational programs diversification were derived as components for model development. Based on this, engineering education model for citizen was presented that matches educational programs according to the type of participation of colleges including key factors and considerations.

지역사회 기반 전국과학관 활성화를 위한 통합이용제도 개발 및 제언 (Development and Suggestion of Integrated Collaboration System to Revitalize Community-Based National Science Museums)

  • 과학관이 선진국형 국가발전 패러다임의 핵심인 국가 창의역량 강화를 위한 기반으로서의 역할을 수행하기 위해서는 국가 전체 과학관의 역량을 모으고, 공유된 가치체계 속에서 협력할 수 있는 플랫폼을 구축하는 것이 중요하지만 현재 국내 과학관은 독자적 운영체제로 국·공·사립 과학관간의 유기적인 연계가 부족한 상황이다. 이 연구에서는 과학관을 중심으로 하여 특정한 주제에 따라 자유학년제를 위한 프로그램을 개발하는 것과 과학관을 포함하여 지역의 문화기관 또는 문화장소 등을 연계한 과학문화 프로그램을 개발하기 위해 기존의 통합이용제도를 수행하고 있는 수개의 과학관에서의 개발 및 운영의 현황을 파악하고자 한다. 도출된 문제점을 기반으로 개선을 통해 과학관중심 또는 과학관포함의 지역사회 기반 통합이용제도를 제시하고자 한다. 이를 위해서 국내의 7개의 실무자를 대상으로 자료수집을 하였으며 개선사항을 제시하기 위해서 국외의 5개의 모범적인 통합이용제도 관련 자료를 수집하여 개선사항에 참고하였다. 지역적인 특성을 고려하여 과학관중심으로 자유학년제용 통합이용제도 또는 문화적인 특성을 고려한 과학관포함 과학문화 통합이용제도는 이 연구에 참여한 과학관 실무자들에 의해서 개발되어 일부는 실제 운영 되었으며 지역기반 국공사립의 과학관의 연계를 활성화 하는데 통합이용제도 프로그램이 결정적인 기능을 할 수 있음을 보여 주었다. 제언으로는 국가차원에서 또는 지방자치제에의 차원에서의 지원이 필수적이며, 교육과정과의 연계가 통합이용제도 프로그램, 이를 개발하고 해설을 하는 전문 인력 배치 또한 중요한 요소로 파악되었다.

Fusion of Library, Archive, Museum, Publisher (LAMP): the NTNU Library Experience

  • The convergence of libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) has garnered attention in recent years. Extending the tendency further, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) fuses the library, archive, museum, and publisher (LAMP) functionality together in its library. This article elaborates on the LAMP practices of the NTNU Library, which indicates that without creating new units in a university, its library can play a good role of curating invaluable university assets.
