  • Many conventional multi-level inverters have detected switching faults by using the over voltage and current. However, fault detection of the switching elements is very difficult because the voltage and current due to each switching fault decrease more than the normal operation. Moreover, the dc-link unbalancing voltage causes a serious problem in the safety and reliability of system when the 3-level inverter faults occur Therefore, this paper proposes the simple fault diagnose method and the neutral-point-voltage control method that can protect the 3-level inverter system from the unbalancing voltage of the do-link capacitors when the faults of switching elements occur in the 3-level inverter that is very efficient in ac motor drives of the high voltage and high power applications. Through experiment results, the validity of the proposed method is demonstrated.

  • A new current controlled PWM technique with NPC structure is proposed in this paper. A current controlled PWM technique with neutral-point-clamped pulse-width modulation inverter composed of main switching devices which operates as switch for PWM and auxiliary switching devices to clamp the output terminal potential to the neutral point potential is described. The proposed current controller has a first and second current band. The switching pattern will be made by the first current band. According to the second current band, the output state of the switching pattern is changed into positive and negative state. This inverter output contains less harmonic content and lower switching frequency than that of conventional current controlled PWM technique at the same current limit. Two inverters are compared analytically and the performance is investigated by the computer simulation.

  • The neutral-point (NP) voltage of three-phase three-level NP-clamped converters is needed for balance. To maintain NP potential and suppress ripple, a novel NP voltage balancing strategy is proposed in this work. The mechanism of NP voltage variation is studied first. Then, the relationship between the disassembly of zero level (O level) and NP current is studied comprehensively. On these bases, two methods for selecting one of three output phases for the disassembly of its O level are presented. Finally, simulation and experimental results verify the validity and practicability of the proposed algorithms.

  • This study proposes a carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) method for leakage current reduction and neutral point (NP) current control in a three-phase three-level converter, which is a carrier-based PWM version of the previously proposed low-frequency common mode voltage PWM. Three groups of space vectors with the same common mode voltage are used. When the averaged NP current needs to be positive or negative, the specific groups are employed to produce low-frequency common mode voltages. The validity of the proposed PWM method is verified through experiments.

  • This paper proposes a simple control strategy based on the discontinuous PWM(DPWM) to balance the DC-link voltage of three-level Neutral-Point-Clamped(WPC) inverters at low modulation index. New DPWM methods in multi-level inverter are also introduced. The proposed DPWM method changes the path and duration to flow the neutral point current out of or into neutral point of the DC-link and it makes the overall fluctuation of the DC-link voltage zero during a sampling time of reference voltage vector. Therefore, the voltage of the DC-link can be balanced fairly well and also the voltage ripple of the DC-link is reduced significantly. Moreover, comparing with conventional methods, the proposed strategy is very simple. The validity of the proposed DPWM method is verified by experiment

  • In 22.9[kV]-y distribution systems, underground cables are provided with multiple-point ground in which each coaxial-neutral line of the distribution cable lines(A, B, C phases) is 3-wire common grounded. In the underground cable distribution systems, circulating current flows in the coaxial-neutral lines and its magnitude amounts to about $40{\sim}50[%]$ load currents, even though loads are balanced. Power loss due to the circulating current consequently reaches to about 76[%] total losses occurred in all conductor lines. This power loss provokes additional temperature rise of the underground cable lines and finally results in 20[%] reduction of the current capacity of the cables. This paper presents a new ground method to overcome such a problem. The proposed method eliminates the circulating current flowing in the coaxial-neutral line effectively. Measurement results confirmed from the practical site-test show validity and effectiveness of this research.

  • In 22.9kV underground distribution system, power cables are provided with multiple-point ground in which each neutral line of the distribution cable(A, B, C phases) and three-wire common grounded at every connecting section. But in such grounding methods, circulating current flows between the neutral wire and grounding wire. And power loss due to circulating current also occurs in all conductors. Therefore it is getting necessary reducing circulating current in underground distribution system. This paper presents improved grounding method to overcome such problems. The proposed grounding method eliminates circulating current in the neutral line effectively and is verified that there is no electrical problem or any ineffectiveness of operating protection systems. These analyses are carried out by EMTP/ATPDraw to compare each grounding methods in steady and transient state. This grounding method suggested in this paper can be applied on real distribution system after field tests considering elimination of circulating current was implemented.

  • In this paper, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) design for sensorless drive, considering magnetic neutral point shift according to magnetic saturation, has been proposed. Sensorless control was divided into a method based on inductance and a method based on back induced voltage. Because induced voltage is very small at zero or low speed, error in rotor initial position estimation may occur. Using the ratio of saliency addresses this problem. When using high-frequency injections at low speed, the rotor's initial position is estimated at the smallest portion of the inductance. IPMSM has the minimum inductance at the d-axis. However, if magnetic saturation leads to magnetic neutral point variation, following the load current change, there is a change in the minimum point of inductance. In this case, it can lead to failure of initial rotor position estimation. As a result, it is essential that the blocking design has an inductance minimum point shift. As such, in this study, an IPMSM design method, by blocking magnetic neutral point change, has been proposed. After determining the inductance profile based on the finite element analysis (FEA), the results of proposed method were verified.

  • This paper proposes a neutral-point voltage ripple reduction of high frequency injection sensorless control of IPMSM fed by a three-level inverter. The high frequency voltage injection method has been successfully applied to sensorless control for IPMSM at low speed region. In the process of high frequency voltage injection sensorless control for IPMSM, the neutral-point voltage ripple is increased. It should be reduced because it distorts the output current and decreases a life time of DC-link capacitor. The proposed method in this paper reduces the neutral-point voltage ripple by compensating the reference voltage, and the compensation value is calculated simply with reference voltages and currents. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation results.

  • This paper presents the countermeasure to present the main transformer of distribution substation from deteriorating and failing due to repeated magnetic force of the transformer winding by ground fault current in 22.9kV multi grounded distribution system. The Winding strength to the short circuit current is designed to be endurable to the stress of over current. But this design is related to the manufactures. In this paper we examine the application of shunt reactor to the neutral point of the low side of the transformer to reduce fault current due to the fault in the distribution lines we have analysed the fault characteristics of the system and calculated the optimum ohmic values of the neutral reactor.
