  • External social support for family can be an important resource for families to overcome economic pressure, and can be a way to understand the concept and process of family resilience in the context of Korean economic crisis. To explore the role of external social support that alleviates the negative effects of economic pressure on marital satisfaction, the buffering effects were tested in two ways. First, the interaction effect between external social support and economic pressure on marital satisfaction was tested using hierarchical linear regression model. Second, the scores of marital satisfaction were plotted by the median scores of economic pressure and external social support. Results from the analyses of 191 couples (382 husbands and wives) indicated that external social support help families by buffering the negative effects of economic pressure on marital satisfaction by interacting with economic pressure.

  • This study discusses whether conflict-coping types of marital couples affect marital satisfaction. There are 5 conflict-coping types of husbands and wives which can be distinguished from each other by attitudes based on partners' answers. Women's conflict-coping types are : compromisors passives apathetics attackers and blamers. Men's conflict-coping types are : reasoners passives jubeniles attackers and volatiles. Each type of husband and wife affects their marital satisfaction. All married coulpes are categorized again by the index of withdraw/demand. As result there is a difference among 3 groups : resoner-husbadn/ any type of wife demand-husband/ withdraw-wife and demand-husband/ demand-wife. In other words when a husband is resoner-husband regardless of the type of wife their marital satisfaction is the highest. And the demand-husband / withdraw-wife type shows a more positive effect on marital satisfaction than the demand-husband/ demand-wife type.

  • Objectives: The aims of this study are to examine the associations between marital satisfaction and life satisfaction among Korean retirees in later life and to test whether the degrees of associations increased over time. Method: Nationally representative Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing data from wave 1 (in 2006) to wave 4 (in 2012) was utilized and retirees in later life (65-89 years old, N=402) were analyzed. Latent growth modeling (LGM) and model constraint were applied using Mplus 7.3. Age, sex, household income, subjective health, depressive symptoms and elapsed time after retirement were included as control variables. Results: Linear unconditional LGM fitted the data well and showed gradual decrease in life satisfaction. Conditional LGM revealed significant associations between marital satisfaction and life satisfaction from time 1 to time 4. According to model constraint test, the size of associations between marital satisfaction and life satisfaction did not change with time. Conclusions: To sum up these results, the associations between marital satisfaction and life satisfaction were significant and relatively stable over time among retirees in later life. This study suggests one's spouse is a fundamental component of social convoy among Korean retirees in later life. Therefore, intervention programs targeted toward enhancing marital relationships among retirees' couples will help them to live a better life.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine whether the Marital Satisfaction Scale(M.S.S) is properly applicable to Korean couples and further to be devoted to the designed of a marital satisfaction scale for Korea. The scale employed in this study was a Korean adaptation of the M.S.S., which originally included 73 items but was reduced to 48 through a study of its validity by Bowden. This scale was administered to 420 couples. One kindergarten, two elementary schools, one middle school, and four high schools, all of them located in Seoul or its satellite cities were selected for the present study. The results of the study were as follows. 1) Through item analysis, 85.4% of the total items showed a high index of discrimination, i.e, of more than +.40, which all was significant discrimination (P<0.001) excluding two items. 2)Factor analysis, which was oriented toward combining factors proper to theory, showed that the M.S.S. consisted of 6 factors and its total variance was 50.18%. The 6 factors were marital satisfaction (factor 1), marital social psychological companionship (factor 2), obstacles to marriage (factor 3), dissatisfaction of marital relationship (factor 4), attitude of the reasonable marital relationship (factor 5), and cognition of married life (factor 6), 3) internal consistency reliability of the M.S.S. was 0.951 and the reliability of the total items after excluding two through item analysis 0.956 and 0.949 respectively, which showed a high internal consistency 4) The marital satisfaction examined by the M.S.S showed significant differences according to sex, education , income, the duration of marriage, the number of children but no significant differences according to age, and family type. From these results, it will be concluded that the M.S.S is a reliable and valid psychological scale for examining marital satisfaction of Korean couples. The limitations of this study were as follows. 1) It can not be generalized to all Korean couples because the subjects was sampled from Seoul or satellite cities. 2)The factor analysis in this study was oriented toward combining factors proper to theory. However, it was very difficult to find out the factors because the components of the M.S.S. was more or less abstract. Thus, from these results some suggestions follow for developing the marital satisfaction scale proper to Korean couples systematically and scientifically. 1) The subjects must be sampled form urban as well as rural areas 2)Factor analysis in this study is oriented toward finding out factors of the M.S.S. Thus, it is needed to analyze the factor validity or construct validity by multitrait - multimethod of the scale with more theoretical conceptualization. 3) It is necessary to examine whether marital satisfaction shows difference according to couples and psychological variables besides objective demographic variables. 4) More research is needed before the M.S.S. con be adapted into a turely useful marital satisfaction scale for Korea.

The paper conducted a survey of 62 patients who visited the general hospital in K area. The survey was conducted from February 5 to April 18, 2024. The difference between sexual life satisfaction and marital intimacy was analyzed by t-test. After ANOVA, Stepwise mulitple regression was performed on the variables affecting the intimacy and satisfaction of the couple's sex life. The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, couples' satisfaction with sex life was significantly higher than the average of 22.6 points for high school graduates, with an average of 31.8 points for college graduates or higher(F=4.96, p=.03). Secondly, the main variable affecting marital intimacy was sexual life satisfaction, which was 30.47% explanatory power. Next, monthly income and postoperative period were shown in order. Thirdly, when the above variables were added, 42.58% of the marital intimacy was explained. Therefore the results will contribute to improving marital satisfaction and quality of life after hysterectomy

The subjects consisted of 237 mothers with young children. Data were analyzed by means of multiple regression analysis, T-test and one way ANOVA. The results included that 1) There were clear differences in terms of the mother's level of education, her monthly income in household, and job satisfaction when it came to the subjective well-being of mothers. 2) The mother-child relationship and marital satisfaction were both positively correlated with the cognitive and affective factor (positive affects) of subjective well-being, whereas there were negative correlations with regard to affective factors (negative affects) of subjective well-being. 3) The mother-child relationship and marital satisfaction accounted for 32.5% of subjective well-being. More specifically, marital satisfaction was the most influential variable when it came to determining the level of life satisfaction (which is also a cognitive factor of subjective well-being), whereas the mother-child relationship was the most influential variable when it came to the affective factor of subjective well-being.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the characteristics of the Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale(KMSS). KMSS was designed as a short and direct assessment of marital satisfaction. The scale consists of three items where respondents are directly asked how satisfied they are with their marriage, with their partner as a spouse, and with their relationship with their spouse. 1) Through item analysis, three items were significant discrimination for husbands and wives. 2) The KMSS consisted of 1 factor for husbands and wives. 3) Cronbach alpha estimates of internal consistency reliability of 93 for husband and of 89 for wives. 4) For wives, the item means between satifaction with their marriage and satisfaction with their relationsphip with their husbands were significantly different, even though the items were highly correlated. For husbands, three item means weren't significantly different. 5) The distribution of responses to the scale for husbands and wives departed si nificantly from normality in terms of skewness and kurtosis. 6) The scale was correlated, in expected directions, with the Marital Comparison Level Index (MCLI) and Marital Instability Index(MII), for husbands and wives. In conclusion, the scale offers promise for use in clinical evaluation and survey research where a brief but reliable measure of marital satisfaction is required.
