  • Cells express several antioxidant enzymes to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for oxidative damages and various human diseases. Therefore, antioxidant enzymes are considered biomedicine candidates. Among them, extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD3) had showed prominent efficacy against asthma and inflammation. Despite its advantages as a biomedicine, the difficulty in obtaining large quantity of active recombinant human SOD3 (rhSOD3) has limited its clinical applications. We found that a significant fraction of over-expressed rhSOD3 was composed of the inactive apo-enzyme and its potency against inflammation depended on the rate of metal incorporation. Also, purified rhSOD3 was unstable and lost its activity very quickly. Here, we suggest an ideal preparative method to express, purify, and store highly active rhSOD3. The enzymatic activity of rhSOD3 was maximized by incorporating metal ions into rhSOD3 after purification. Also, albumin or polyethylene glycol prevented rapid inactivation or degradation of rhSOD3 during preparative procedures and long-term storage.

  • There was a Golden Age of Fantasy novels in the United Kingdom in the 19th Century, which had the major writers, Lewis Carroll and George MacDonald. These writers pushed the boundaries of imagination and created a new world in which explore their own selves and societies. Fantasy novels flowered in the 1860s when a group of writers including Carroll and MacDonald published their works. These writers used the trait of dream framing to create their own fantasy world in which they took the action against the complicated and oppressive Victorian reality. Carroll's fantasy worlds of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass were an insane and chaotic world where the certainty of the real world was overturned. MacDonald's dream worlds of At the Back of the North Wind and the Princess books including The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie were ideal societies in which imaginative characters could create harmony between fantasy and reality. Fantasy writers engaged in making journey to other lands to do philosophical and moral discussion critiquing Victorian society and to find insights into those problems in their works. Thus, their fantasy journey traverses time and place can produce some suggestive answers to the questions that lie in other times and realities as well as theirs.

  • Postburn scar contracture of sole can cause musculoskeletal deformity, restricted range of motion, and decreased quality of life. It is very important to exhibit similar characteristics of the sole when reconstructing the sole because it has to resist shearing force and weight bearing. In this case, we performed medialis pedis free flap for the postburn scar contracture of the sole and the flap survived without complication. The patient satisfied with functional and aesthetic outcomes. Medialis pedis free flap, which is harvested adjacent to the sole, can show similar characteristic of the sole and maintain adequate contour. Moreover, this flap can be harvested without sacrifice of major vessel or nerve. Due to these advantages, medialis pedis free flap can be an ideal option for the reconstruction of the sole.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the energy intake and energy expenditure of obese children. The body weight and height were measured, and the daily energy intake and activity pattern assessed for one day, using the 24 hour recall method and interviews in 83 elementary school children (59 boys and 24 girls). The average age, height, weight, ideal body weight and obesity index in boys and girls were 11.8 years, 144.8 cm, 54.2 kg, 39.9 kg and 35.9% and 11.5 years, 140.8 cm, 48.9 kg, 36.9 kg and 33.7%, respectively. The mean daily energy intakes of boys and girls were 1,670.5 and 1,656.5 kcal; these being 76.4 and 88.5% of estimated energy requirement for Koreans, respectively. The energy intake ratio from carbohydrates, proteins and fats in boys and girls were 61.5:14.7:23.6 and 62.0:14.7:23.7, respectively. The resting energy expenditure, as estimated by the Harris-Benedict, WHO/NAO/FAO and Korean DRI formulae in boys and girls were 1,452.7, 1,239.2 and 1,629.2 kcal and 1,323.9, 1,156.0 and 1,252.4 kcal, respectively. The activity coefficient for both the boys and girls was 1.39. The daily energy expenditure of boys (1,990.7 kcal) was significantly higher than that of girls (1712.1 kcal). No significant correlations were found between the obesity index, energy intake and energy expenditure. These results suggested that a nutrition and exercise program is required to increase the energy expenditure of elementary school children. Further research will be needed to assess multiple dietary factors and dove]lop a standard method for assessing the energy expenditure of obese children.

  • The purpose of this study was to understand children's viewpoints on their fathers from a phenomenological perspective. Sixty nine elementary school children (2nd and 5th grade) were asked to write poems about their fathers. Through the poems, they described their feelings towards their fathers in their own words. Results indicated that the most prominent and popular description for the father was in terms of the provider of the family. Because of the excessive emphasis on the provider role, fathers are very busy and tired, and can not Participate actively in their children's daily life. As a result, many fathers are in an on-looker position in their homes, and their children are spoiled. On the other hand, children described their fathers as warm, kind- hearted, respectable and great images that gave everything to their children. They liked and sincerely appreciated these aspects of their fathers. Because of the gap between the ideal image of the father and the actual provider image of the father, children experience conflict and a psychological deficit of a father. We believe that this problem will be improved through the fathers' own awareness of their role which pays more attention to our children's wellbeing and a reform of the existing social system.
