The purpose of this study was to investigate teachers' perceptions of gender differences in students' mathematics and science learning ability. The sample included 289 elementary and secondary school gifted teachers. The teachers filled out the survey, asking their perceptions of gender differences in mathematics and science learning ability, as well as of the reasons of the differences. The results were as follows: 1) 65% of the teachers responded that gender differences existed in students' mathematics and science learning ability, 2) 63% of the teachers perceived that the differences began around higher elementary or middle school ages, 3) 57% of the teachers thought that gender differences existed in the high-achieving student group. Teachers perceived the reasons of differences were 1) differences in inborn ability, 2) the different expectation, and 3) the different ways of parental cares. Since teachers' perceptions of students' ability would impact teachers' attitudes on students, implications and suggestions were included in this article to provide teachers insights that promote students' better learning.
The purpose of this study was exploring instructive methods to make each gifted child's ability develop as more by selecting the dynamic method instead of existing static method in teaching and evaluating science-gifted students in elementary school and by analyzing conceptual change of electric circuit. In this research, 11 science-gifted students in primary school were chosen, and Dynamic Science Assessment(DSA) intended to comprehension of scientific electric circuit concept was performed as focusing on scaffolding aspects in order to find the transition process. And then, the features on transition process of students' concept were analyzed in quality. The results of the study were checked that the features of useful scaffolding input with respect to comprehending concepts of science gifted-students by using DSA. The less familiar to approach the subjects, the more presented numbers of scaffolding showed. As coming toward transition and same questions, scaffoldings (interactions) were declined because their level of transition was higher than before. Various ways were used in helping the students comprehend the concept on the method of connecting electric circuit and the emitting amount of current, which acted to adapt to daily life.
This study intends to analyze open-ended inquiry activities of elementary science-gifted students in terms of how similar they are to authentic science inquiry and suggest desirable ways to make more effective programs for the gifted. For this study, we selected a small group with five elementary science-gifted students who had participated in the open inquiry program of summer camp held in the Institute for Science Gifted Education and collected data through recording and video-taping their discussion and performance from planning to coordinating inquiry results. The data was analyzed in terms of epistemological features and cognitive process in authentic science inquiry. The results is as follows. In terms of epistemology, students' inquiry methods were theory laden and they constructed knowledge in collaborative groups. For example, the students often discussed about performing the thought experiment and scientific concept related to inquiry task or their opinion. And in terms of cognitive process, their designing inquiry was similar to authentic science inquiry especially selecting variables, planning procedures, controlling variables, planning measures.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the research ethics elementary and secondary gifted students enrolled in science-gifted education center of university and to get the implications of research ethics education. 180 elementary and secondary gifted students and 180 general students were participated. The results obtained from this study were as follows: First, the item, such as 'The researchers must have self-esteem and responsibility in their study', both the gifted students and the general students showed the highest perception. On the contrary, the item 'I think that it is right to exclude the person who didn't participate in research' both the gifted students and the general students showed the lowest perception. And gifted students' perception on research ethics was higher than the general students' on the whole. There was a statistically significant difference between two groups(p<.05). Second, the scientifically gifted students' research ethics in 'basic attitude of the researchers' was significantly higher than mathematically gifted students' and IT gifted students' (p<.05). Third, there was a statistically significant difference between the elementary gifted students and secondary gifted students in 'ethics of thought and expression' (p<.05). Fourth, experience in research ethics education and the number of research experience was significantly effect on perception of research ethics. There was a statistically significant interaction effect between gifted students and general students in 'science, technology, biomedical research ethics' items(p<.05).
The purpose of this study was to explore a more useful identification method by comparing diverse selection approaches for the gifted education programs at the each elementary school. Diverse selection methods examined in the study include 'written examinations', 'mixed evaluation', 'achievement test scores', and 'self-recommendation'. For the study, each identification group's gifted students' characteristics, such as intelligence, creativity, motivation and self-regulated learning strategies, were compared. The subjects of the study were a total of 594 gifted and normal students. The results of this study were as follows: First, there were no statistically significant differences between students in each gifted education class and gifted students who belong to the regional gifted education programs which are considered higher level of gifted education programs. While, there were statistically significant differences between two groups of gifted students and general students in all aspects examined, such as intelligence, creativity, motivation and learning strategies. In addition and most importantly, diverse identification method utilized in each school showed differences in gifted students' characteristics. Especially, students who were selected through the self-recommendation showed significantly lower intelligence, creativity, motivation and learning strategies. The implications of the study related to the identification and education for the gifted at each elementary school were discussed in depth.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of science gifted students who participated in science gifted activity using rainbow. For this purpose, the science gifted activity using rainbow was developed and applied to 23 seventh grade science gifted students. The results indicated that gifted students had various concepts and ideas of optics. For example, some gifted students thought that there was rainbowshaped light at the place of rainbow, and another considered the process of dispersion of light in a waterdrop would be same as the process of the dispersion in the prism. Also, various rainbow theories and scientific imagination of gifted students were found. For devising new rainbow, gifted students used two strategies, 'changing the features' and 'changing conditions'. In addition, we discussed effective methods of applying this activity and implications to science gifted education.
The purpose of this study was to explore the differences in perfectionism and stresses between the scientifically gifted middle school students and general students and the relationships between perfectionism types and stresses in these two groups. One hundred and forty three scientifically gifted middle school students and 148 students from K middle school in Seoul were participated in this study as subjects. In case of the gifted group, overall perfectionism and self-oriented perfectionism were higher than the comparative group. However, the socially prescribed perfectionism of the comparative group was higher than the gifted group. The gifted groups felt less stresses than the comparative group. There were correlations between the socially prescribed perfectionism and school life stresses in the gifted students.
This study is a report about the two summer camps of 2009 and 2010, which were held by some gifted classes of Liberal Arts areas in Chungnam Province. The students' self- directed methods, making an own project topic and an outline plan for that by students themselves before the camp, raised up the students' satisfaction of the camp effectively. Staying with their peer students and teachers for 3 days gave the gifted students a chance for relationship, self-confidence, and self-sufficiency. These joint summer camps provided the students with cognitive development, motivations and a chance to meet other gifted students. Teachers' preparation for the camp, their concrete feedback to each student's project, and students' time spending on one's own camp project were correlated with the students' satisfaction of the camp program. Experience of teacher training in gifted education made significant differences in understanding gifted students and expectations of students' social and emotional development throughout and after the camp.
The purpose of this study was to explore why gifted students drop out of school by examining two gifted students who chose to drop out their schools. The result of triangulation interviews, observations, and analysis of the available documents revealed the following: first, in regular classrooms they were bored due to the long periods of time they had to wait and they were even unsatisfied at the gifted education programs in which they had high expectations for either; second, they did not have any friends to share the same interests; third, they had a hard time due to their emotional sensitivity and a sense of a justice that most other students overlooked; fourth, they had tough experiences with teachers who did not understood their educational and social needs; and finally, they had parents who did their best and tried to support their extraordinary child. From examining the reasons of the gifted students for deciding to leave the school, it should be noted that more interest and care needs to be given to those students.
It is crucial to understand the characteristics of learner questioning due to the effects it has on learning. This study focuses on the effects of middle school students questioning on their academic achievement in an online inquiry learning environment. A survey of 827 middle school students was conducted; the students took part in an online math and science program offered by a center for the gifted. Throughout the survey, learner questioning was analyzed, and its correlation with academic achievement was investigated. An analysis was based on questioning categories of a low- and high-level questions from previous studies. Through the survey, it was found that the number of learner questions asked in the online environment was small, but the number of low- and high-level questions were almost equal. Secondly, the higher the academic achievement level of the student, the higher the possibility they would ask either low- or high-level questions. Lastly the group of students in both low- and high-levels of questioning earned the highest average scores on formative evaluations and inquiry tasks. This indicates that regardless of the level of questions, the act of questioning itself is highly related to the academic achievement. However, in the case of advanced learning projects, the quality of questioning and high-level questioning affected the academic achievement of students. Based on these results, implications for the encouragement of learner questioning and support for asking high-level question are suggested.
