In addition, this study explore the content of game reviews according to the game's sales strategy such as early access strategy and releasing without early access. Design/methodology/approach We collected a list of 3,572 action genre games released in 2020. 58,336 online reviews were collected by random sampling 50 reviews in each games, and topic modeling was performed on those reviews. We dynamized the results of topic modeling and analyzed the effect on review helpfulness with multiple regression analysis. Findings The results of analysis indicate that the longer the review is or the shorter the time it is written, the more helpful the review is. In addition the topic with positive and negative review has a significant effect on the review helpfulness. As a result of exploratory analysis, games from early access had relatively fewer reviews of story-related topics than games that were released without early access. These findings can present direct guidelines for collecting specific opinions from customers in the game industry when releasing games.

  • This study investigated player responses to microtransactions in freemium Massively multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORPG), specifically focusing on the game LostArk using English language review data. To this end, structural topic modeling was employed and the following six microtransaction-relevant topics were identified: microtransactions, developer issues, real money trade (RMT), random number generator (RNG) upgrade system, game content, and collectibles & adventure. The first four topics were classified as being "not recommended". However, the proportions of microtransaction-related topics were relatively lower than the other topics. Additionally, this study did not extract keywords related to unfairness and unethical issues in previous microtransaction research. The last two topics, game content, and collectibles & adventure were "recommended" topics, indicating positive functions of microtransactions such as enhancing the game experience by purchasing virtual items. Moreover, it was found that players who do not engage in microtransactions can still be satisfied through continuous game content updates. Additionally, an examination of the interaction effect between time and recommendation status revealed that while the frequency with which the six microtransaction-related topics were mentioned increased over time in the reviews, the ratio of recommendations to non-recommendations varied differently. This study contributes to game-related research by revealing players' authentic opinions on microtransactions in freemium MMORPGs, thereby providing practical implications for game companies.

  • This study examined the factors determining experience of flow in mobile social network games. Built upon the literature on flow experience in the Internet and online games, this study classified the determining factors into three categories. The first category is the content factor which includes graphic design, challenge, and incentive; the second is the device factor including ease of access and ease of control; the third is the social factor including social interaction and community activities. A correlation analysis was conducted to examine the association between each of the seven determining factors and flow experience. Additionally, a hierarchical regression analysis was performed to evaluate which of the selected factors would exert a relatively strong influence on experience of flow. Both analyses reached the same conclusions as follows: Graphic design, incentive, and community activities increase flow experience while challenge and ease of control exert little influence on flow experience. In addition, graphic design was the most influential element in determining flow experience, followed by community activities and incentive, respectively.

  • In the prior works on tabletop systems, a projection-based tabletop surface is mostly used to display computer images, and the participants interact with the display surface by hand multi-touching or using some tangible objects. In this research, however, we developed the FishBowl game that employs a scalable tabletop tiled display with infrared camera tracking coupled with PDA mobile interfaces. The focus of this game is to enhance user interactivity and realistic experience by coupling the high-resolution tabletop virtual environment and PDA mobile interface. This paper describes the game design followed by the system design and its detailed implementations. It also discusses the system usability and recommendation for its improvements after interviewing game players and then concludes with future research directions.
