  • RC column bent piers represent one of the most popular piers used in highway bridges. Seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) column-bent piers under bidirectional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. Six column bent piers were constructed with two circular supporting columns. Test parameters are different transverse reinforcement and loading pattern. Three specimens were loaded with bidirectional lateral forces which were main cyclic loads in the longitudinal direction and subcyclic loads in the transverse direction. Other three specimens were loaded in the opposite way. Test results indicated that lateral strength and ductility of the latter specimens were bigger than those of the former specimens. Plastic hinge was formed with the spall of cover concrete and the fracture of the longitudinal reinforcing steels in the bottom part of two supporting columns for the former three specimens. Similar behavior was observed in the top and bottom parts of two supporting columns for the latter three specimens.

  • In the June, 1991, there was the explosion in which methanol rectified column as a part of the new surface active agent's manufacturing processes. The type of explosion was estimated as the 'detonation'. The methanol rectified column was ruined, and broken pieces of the column were scattered within 900m. Also, there were victims such as the two deads and thirteen wounded persons. The cause of the explosion was heat explosion by being concentrated locally from 0.1% to several tens% of supply fluid at Metal Hydroperoxide, which was produced by methanol and hydrogen peroxide used as the bleach of surface active agent, during the operation stoppage process of methanol rectified column.

  • Column shear failures observed during recent earthquakes and experimental data indicate that shear deformations are typically associated with the amount of transverse reinforcement, column aspect ratio, axial load, and a few other parameters. It was shown that in some columns shear displacements can be significantly large, especially after flexural yielding. In this paper, a piecewise linear model is developed to predict an envelope of the cyclic shear response including the shear displacement and corresponding strength predictions at the first shear cracking, peak strength, onset of lateral strength degradation, and loss of axial-load-carrying capacity. Part of the proposed model is developed using the analysis results from the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT). The results from the proposed model, which uses simplified equations, are compared with the column test data.

  • An ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) farm in Korea recently experienced an epidemic of vertebral column deformities where about 90% of fry displayed a vertebral column that was grossly opaque along either the cranial part of the column or its entire length. Abnormal fish were lordotic, scoliotic and/or kyphotic about midway down the spine. Examination of serial sections of whole fish showed only histological lesions in the vertebral column and suggested some disturbance in the early development of the vertebral centrum. Such abnormalities included a frayed spinal or notochord sheaths with irregular thickening and compression, mal-absorbed notochord cells, thickening of around cell layer and hypercellularity on both facets of the notochord sheath. No parasites, fungi, or bacteria were detected. While this lesion has only been reported once in the past, this is the first report of histopathological findings.

  • When top down method is used, it could be a construction method trouble in column joint, between the former concrete and the latter. It could bring a void and weak concrete in column. The purpose of this study is finding a way to prevent concrete void and concrete suitable for top down , through V-metering for top down column and concrete experiment. To minimize the void of reverse placement joint, It is more effect to use the sheath method then direct method in concrete placement.

  • Seismic performance of structures depends on the force flow mechanism inside the structure. Discontinuity regions, like beam-column joints, are often affected during earthquake event due to the complex and discontinuous load paths. The evaluation of shear strength and identification of failure mode of the joint region are helpful to (i) define the strength hierarchy of the beam-column sub-assemblage, (ii) quantify the influence of different parameters on the behaviour of beam-column joint and, (iii) develop suitable and adequate strengthening scheme for the joints, if required, to obtain the desired strength hierarchy. In view of this, it is very important to estimate the joint shear strength and identify the failure modes of the joint region as it is the most critical part in any beam-column sub-assemblage. One of the most effective models is softened strut and tie model which was developed by incorporating force equilibrium, strain compatibility and constitutive laws of cracked reinforced concrete. In this study, softened strut and tie model, which incorporates force equilibrium equations, compatibility conditions and material constitutive relation of the cracked concrete, are used to simulate the shear strength behaviour and to identify failure mechanisms of the beam-column joints. The observations of the present study will be helpful to arrive at the design strategy of the joints to ensure the desired failure mechanism and strength hierarchy to achieve sustainability of structural systems under seismic loading.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical investigations on additional fixed-end rotations resulting from the strain penetration of high-strength reinforcement in reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column connections under monotonic loading. The experimental part included the test of 18 interior beam-column connections with straight long steel bars and 24 exterior beam-column connections with hooked and headed steel bars. Rebar strains along the anchorage length were recorded at the yielding and ultimate states. Furthermore, a numerical program was developed to study the effect of strain penetration in beam-column connections. The numerical results showed good agreement with the test results. Finally, 87 simulated specimens were designed with various parameters based on the test specimens. The effect of concrete compressive strength ($f_c$), yield strength ($f_y$), diameter ($d_b$), and anchorage length ($l_{ah}$) of the reinforcement in the beam-column connection was examined through a parametric study. The results indicated that additional fixed-end rotations increased with a decrease in $f_c$ and an increase in $f_y$, $d_b$ and $l_{ah}$. Moreover, the growth rate of additional fixed-end rotations at the yielding state was faster than that at the ultimate state when high-strength steel bars were used.

  • This research was conducted to study the behavior of exterior concrete beam-column joints with reinforced shape memory alloy (SMA) bars tested under cyclic loading. These bars benefit from superelastic behavior and can stand high loads without residual strains. The experimental part of the study, 8 specimens of exterior concrete beam-column joints were made and tested. Two different types of concrete with 30 and 45 MPa were used. Four specimens contained SMA bars and 4 specimens contained steel bars in beam-column joints. Furthermore, different transverse reinforcements were used in beams investigate the effects of concrete confinement. Specimens were tested under cyclic loading. Results show that SMA bars are capable of recentering to their original shape after standing large displacements. Due to the superelastic behavior of SMA bars, cracks at the joint core vanish under cyclic loading. As the cyclic loading increased, bending failure occurred in the beam outside the joint core. In the analytical parts of the study, specimens were simulated using the SeismoStruct software. Experimental and analytical results showed a satisfactory correlation. Plastic hinge length at the beam joint for specimens with SMA and steel bars was calculated by empirical equations, experimental and analytical results. It was shown that Paulay's and Priestley's equations are appropriate for concrete beam-column joints in both types of bars.

  • In this paper we propose a novel log template discovery algorithm which achieves high quality of discovered log templates through iterative log filtering technique. Log templates are the static string pattern of logs that are used to produce actual logs by inserting variable values during runtime. Identifying individual logs into their template category correctly enables us to conduct automated analysis using state-of-the-art machine learning techniques. Our technique looks at the group of logs column-wise and filters the logs that have the value of the highest proportion. We repeat this process per each column until we are left with highly homogeneous set of logs that most likely belong to the same log template category. Then, we determine which column is the static part and which is the variable part by vertically comparing all the logs in the group. This process repeats until we have discovered all the templates from given logs. Also, during this process we discover the custom patterns such as ID formats that are unique to the application. This information helps us quickly identify such strings in the logs as variable parts thereby further increasing the accuracy of the discovered log templates. Existing solutions suffer from log templates being too general or too specific because of the inability to detect custom patterns. Through extensive evaluations we have learned that our proposed method achieves 2 to 20 times better accuracy.
