  • Quality in agriculture statistics at the international level is very important to all countries in the world. We investigate international organizations which produce worldwide agricultural statistics. The UN-FAO is one of the most important organization in agricultural statistics fields. We first introduce the Statistics division in FAO and present some considerations like production, reliability, quality of the agriculture data from my own experience as a consultant in FAO and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in Korea.

  • As climate change escalates extreme weather events, the structural durability of plastic greenhouses, constituting 90% of Korea's facility agriculture, emerges as a critical issue. These greenhouses are pivotal for year-round crop cultivation and high-quality agricultural production. In 2021, collapses caused around US$2 million in damages, mainly due to heavy snowfall and strong winds, accounting for 97% of incidents. The Korean Ministry of Agriculture responded by disseminating disaster-resistant standardized designs, yet more robust standards are needed. Current designs rely on elastic analysis, but plastic greenhouses display nonlinear behavior due to factors like residual stress and local buckling. Our study employs a refined plastic hinge method and finite element analysis to analyze structures, considering progressive yielding. We conducted loading tests using scale down models of plastic greenhouses in accordance with similitude laws. Based on these tests, the deformation of models under different load conditions was measured and compared with the deformation of greenhouse using our nonlinear structural analysis. This study will contribute to the development of reliable design criteria for plastic greenhouses in response to climate extremes such as heavy snowfall and typhoons. In addition, by identifying the deformation characteristics of plastic greenhouses due to loads, it can contribute to establishing usability standards for greenhouses, and reinforcement measures for vulnerable areas which are easily deformed under load can be considered.

  • In an ongoing survey of Korean indigenous fungi, three fungal strains belonging to the Sordariomycetes were isolated from soil samples. These strains were designated KNU16-001, KNU16-002, and KNU16-009, and identified as Ambrosiella grosmanniae, Acremonium sclerotigenum, and Trichocladium asperum, respectively, based on morphological characterization and phylogenetic analysis using internal transcribed spacer region sequences of ribosomal DNA. This is the first report of these species in Korea.

  • In general, it is difficult to control weeds, diseases and insects with no chemical material in large scaled cultivation. Particularly, it is nearly impossible for a temperate country with a lot of rain such as Japan or Korea, to make organic agriculture on a large scale. Are there any possibilities to develop a large scaled organic agriculture in the world\ulcorner In Xinjang where is located in the central Asia, established Shihezi Agricultural and Environmental Institute for Arid Area of Central Asia three years ago in Shihezi, Xinjiang, China, for improving crop production in arid area. One of the main objectives is to establish organic agriculture in Xinjiang, with using suitable conditions for agriculture.

  • Environment is the important issue in many field of study. EU introduced multifunctionality of agriculture in 1980s and adopted strong policy to support that in 1990s. Environment is very important factor of multifunctionality of agriculture. But multifunctionality is not purpose in itself. It is exceptional rule and a means to an purpose. Multifunctionality of agriculture is relation to logic of economics. Mutifunctionality of agriculture was introduced in Korea in 1990s. Owing to different paradigm approach, multifunctionality of agriculture and environmental education have different concept and basis. The purpose of this study is to introduce socio-economical context of multifunctionality of agriculture and enhance mutual understand. More study activities should be encouraged to improve mutual understand and interdisciplinary research.

  • Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are naturally occurring bacteria that intensively colonize plant roots and are crucial in promoting the crop growth. These beneficial microorganisms have garnered considerable attention as potential bio-inoculants for sustainable agriculture. PGPR directly interacts with plants by providing essential nutrients through nitrogen fixation and phosphate solubilization and accelerating the accessibility of other trace elements such as Cu, Zn, and Fe. Additionally, they produce plant growth-promoting phytohormones, such as indole acetic acids (IAA), indole butyric acids (IBA), gibberellins, and cytokinins.PGPR interacts with plants indirectly by protecting them from diseases and infections by producing antibiotics, siderophores, hydrogen cyanide, and fungal cell wall-degrading enzymes such as glucanases, chitinases, and proteases. Furthermore, PGPR protects plants against abiotic stresses such as drought and salinity by producing 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase and modulating plant stress markers. Bacteria belonging to genera such as Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Burkholderia, Pantoa, and Enterobacter exhibit multiple plant growth-promoting traits, that can enhance plant growth directly, indirectly, or through synergetic effects. This comprehensive review emphasizes how PGPR influences plant growth promotion and presents promising prospects for its application in sustainable agriculture.

  • Recently, plasma technology has been increasingly applied to agriculture and foods. Owing to the three important plasma characteristics which are activation, sterilization, and catalysis, the plasma technology can be properly applied to agriculture, in the other word, to the whole cycle of agriculture from farm to table: seed germination, plant growth, harvest and storage, washing, packaging, transport, in store, household, cooking, garbage, etc. Some representative case studies for plasma activation, sterilization, and catalysis show well that plasma technology can be successfully applied to the whole cycle of agriculture.
