  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to observe the effect of Pyung-Hyung acupuncture on peripheral facial palsy. Methods : We investigated 44 cases of patients with peripheral facial paralysis, and divided patients into two groups. We treated one group by complex oriental medical treatment with Pyung-Hyung acupuncture, and the other group by complex oriental medical treatment without Pyung-Hyung acupuncture. To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment applied for two groups, we used Yanagihara's unweighed grading system(Y system) and gross grading system of House-Brackmann(HB score) at baseline and final. Results : 1. The final Y-system in both the Pyung-Hyung acupuncture group and the control group significantly increased compared to the value at baseline. 2. At final, Pyung-Hyung acupuncture group showed significantly increase on Y-system compared with control group. Conclusions : Pyung-Hyung acupuncture can be used for relieving symptoms related with peripheral facial paralysis.

  • Objectives : This study was to compare the effect of moxibustion therapy on peripheral facial para- lysis according to location of acupoint. Methods : We investigated 41 cases of inpatients with Peripheral Facial Paralysis, and divided them into two groups, One group was treated by moxibustion on local point(ML), and the other was treated by moxibustion on distant point(MD). We evaluated the effect of moxibustion in each group by using Gross Grading System of House-Brackmann(HB score) and Yanagihara's Unweighed Grading System(Y score). Results : 1. In ML and MD, compared with baseline, at final, HB score was significantly decreased and Y score was significantly increased. 2. At final, ML showed significant decrease on HB score and significant increase on Y score compared with MD. Conclusions : These results suggested that ML should be more useful for improving symptoms related with peripheral facial paralysis than MD.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to compare the effect between method of regulating ascending kidney water and descending heart fire and sweet bee venom pharmacopuncture on peripheral facial paralysis. Methods : We investigated 30 cases of patient with peripheral facial paralysis who visited at Dept. of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, of Oriental Medicine Dong-eui University from November 29, 2010 to May 15, 2011. Subjects were divided randomly into two groups, group A and group B. We applied method of regulating ascending kidney water and descending heart fire twice or three times a week for group A and sweet bee venom pharmacopuncture with same cycle for group B. We measured the effect of treatment to each group five times by using Yanagihara's unweighed grading system. at first examination, after 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks. Results : Both groups showed significant improvement in Yanagihara's scores. And group A was improved better than group B for two weeks from the first examination significantly. But after one week from then, the Yanagihara's scores of group B were higher than those of group A significantly. There were no significant differences during other period. Conclusions : Method of regulating ascending kidney water and descending heart fire is more effective than sweet bee venom pharmacopuncture on peripheral facial paralysis during acute period. And after acute period, sweet bee venom pharmacopuncture is more effective than method of regulating ascending kidney water and descending heart fire.

Results : 1. 55 patients were treated with Korean Medicine therapy and 23.27±14.11 times of herbal steam therapy. 2. After treatment, Y-system score was significantly increased(p-value<0.001) from 18.00±6.5514 to 35.00±6.3404. Conclusions : Herbal stream therapy seem to be effective to improve symptoms of peripheral facial paralysis. Further studies will be needed to identify the beneficial of herbal steam therapy on peripheral facial paralysis.

  • This study aimed to report the effect of moving cupping therapy (MCT) on peripheral facial palsy (PFP). Four patients with PFP treated with MCT combined with integrative Korean medicine treatment (KMT). Patients were hospitalized for < 17 days. House-Brackmann Grading System (HBGS), Yanagihara grading score (Y-score), and Sunnybrook Facial Grading System (SBGS) were used to assess the changes during treatment periods, and facial photos were taken at admission, interim, and discharge. Facial paralysis symptoms and HBGS grades improved in all patients (Patient 1: HBGS of IV to II; Patient 2: HBGS of V to III; Patient 3: HBGS of IV to II; Patient 4: HBGS of IV to II) following an average of 14.5 days of treatment. The mean (± standard deviation) Y-scores and SBGS scores also increased (Δ[Y-score]: 13.75 ± 3.50 and Δ[SBGS]: 40.00 ± 13.11) from baseline to end of treatment. These findings suggest the clinical effectiveness of MCT combined with integrative KMT in treating patients with PFP.

  • Objective : The aim of this study was to assess the effects of admission care on Bell's palsy by case control study. Method : 27 patients who diagnosed as Bell's palsy were shared 13 inpatients group treated by early admission care, and 14 outpatients group. They were equally treated with acupuncture, herb medicine and western medicine. The groups were evaluated by Yanagihara,s unweighted grading system at pre-treatment, after 5 days, after 10 days and after 15 days. Results : The Yanagihara,s scores of 2 groups showed stastically significant improvement in comparison with pre-treatment. In improvement index after treatment, the Yanagihara,s scores of 2 groups increased but were not stastically significant the difference. Conclusion : These results provided that the admission care may not be a valuable treatment for Bell's palsy. Further study is needed to evaluate the effect of early admission care on Bell's palsy.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of using Korean medical treatment for peripheral facial nerve palsy. Methods: We primarily treated the patient's peripheral facial nerve palsy during hospitalization (06/28/21~07/13/21) without any other steroids or antiviral drug treatments and additionally treated their spinal stenosis, using Korean medical treatments in both cases (herbal medicine, acupuncture, and herbal acupuncture therapy). The House-Brackmann grading system and Yanagihara's unweighted grading system were used to assess facial symptom changes, and the Numerical Rating Scale was used to evaluate the back pain caused by the spinal stenosis. Results: Following treatment, the patient's House-Brackmann and Numerical Rating Scale scores decreased, while their Yanagihara unweighted score improved. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine may be effective in the treatment of facial nerve palsy.

Methods : We divided 42 patients with Peripheral Facial Paralysis who had admitted at Semyung University Chung-ju Oriental Hospital into two groups, The A group which had Functional Dyspepsia, and The B group which didn't have Functional Dyspepsia. Then we applied acupuncture, physical therapy, herb medicine to the patients. The effects of treatment was evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighed grading system. Results : A group's improvement index which is measured by Yanagihara's unwei ghed grading system was lower than B group's improvement index. Conclusions : Through oriental medicine treatment, the patients recovered significantly. The patients who has functional dyspepsia recovered slowly than the patients who has not functional dyspepsia.

Methods : Four patients with peripheral facial palsy were treated with herbal medication, acupuncture, pharmacoacupunture, and NRT-F. The effect of treatment was evaluated by House-Brackmann Scale and the Yanagihara grading system. Results : After Korean medicine treatments with SJS NRT-F, symptoms were decreased and conditions were improved. Furthermore, the House-Brackmann Scale and the Yanagihara grading system scores were numerically better. Conclusions : The Korean medicine treatments with SJS NRT-F might be effective for Facial palsy.
