  • Polyester composites play a vital role in civil engineering applications, especially in bridge and car park structures. Therefore, the addition of waste silica-based fillers will both improve the mechanical and durability performance of composites and produce an environmentally friendly material. In this study, the mechanical performance of polyester composites was investigated experimentally and numerically by adding micro and nano-sized silica-based fillers, marble powder, silica fume and nano-silica. 24 cubes for the compression test and 18 prisms for the flexural test were produced in six different groups containing 30% marble powder, 5% silica fume and 1% nano-silica by weight. SEM/EDS testing was used to investigate the distribution of filler particles in the matrix. Experimentally collected results were used to validate tests in the Abaqus software. Additionally, the Extended Finite Element Method (XFEM) was used to estimate the fracture process for the flexural test. The results show that the added silica fume, marble powder and nano silica improves the compressive strength of polyester composites by 32-38% and the flexural tensile strength by 10-60% compared to pure polyester composite. The numerically obtained results matched well with the experimental data, demonstrating the accuracy and feasibility of the calibrated finite element model.

  • It is important to evaluate rock strength in order to check stability of a rock slope or to design a structure built on rock. However, test methods used for the evaluation have some difficulties since rock samples provide various deviation of strength due to micro cracks in the samples and teat errors, Also, reliable data have not been accumulated for the rock strength in Korea. Therefore, simple teat methods that can be used easily for investication of rock strength in field or in laboratory are not provided sufficiently yet. This study is to investigate variation of the rock strength due to the degree of weathering and to evaluate the degree of weathering by types of rocks, by using data that have been obtained for several years. Therefore, it is possible to provide a relationship between several rock strength values by performing tests such as uniaxial compression teat, point load test, schmidt hammer teat, absorption ratio best and slaking durability tests. The equations of relationships that can be used to estimate rock strength by using simple test methods in field and in laboratory are proposed.

  • The mechanical properties of living tissues have been major subjects of interest in biomechanics. In particular, the characteristics of very soft materials such as the brain have not been fully understood because experiments are often severely limited by ethical guidelines. There are increasing demands for studies on remote medical operations using robots. We conducted compression tests on brain-like specimens made of gelatin to find substitutes with the mechanical properties of brain tissues. Using a finite element analysis, we compared our experimental data with existing data on the brain in order to establish material models for brain tissues. We found that our substitute models for brain tissues effectively simulated their mechanical behaviors.

  • Purpose : This study set out to compare the educational effects of a video self-instruction program for child CPR education on childcare teachers by applying the 2006 KACPR Guideline. By adopting the nonequivalent control group posttest quasi-experimental design, the study examined the educational effects on a group that did not receive instructions from the instructor, another group that received his instructions, and the other group that received an extra three-minute practice training session in addition to instructions. Methods : Data were gathered from August 6 to 18, 2008. As for research tools, the Knowledge Instrument of CPR by Connolly (2006) was used along with the National Practice Test Protocol for C1ass 1 Emergency Medical Technicians (2007) and Common Protocol for CPR (2006) to examine the performance of child CPR. By shooting the guide screen of $Resusci^{(R)}$ Junior CPR Manikin of Leardal with a video camera and using the Skill Guide Checklist of the Common Protocol for CPR (2006), the subjects' technical accuracy of chi1d CPR was evaluated. There were three subject groups: 29 childcare teachers randomly assigned to received the video self-instruction program training for chi1d CPR and no instructions from the instructor made up the control group; 22 childcare teachers randomly assigned to received the program training and instructions from the instructor made up experiment group I; 23 childcare teachers randomly assigned to received an extra three-minute practice training session in addition to the program training and the instructions made up experiment group II. The gathered data were analyzed with SPSS/PC+ (Version 14.0) in frequency, percentage, $X^2$-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test. Results : 1) There were no statistically significant differences (F=1.030, p=.362) among the groups in terms of knowledge scores after the child CPR education. 2) There were statistically significant differences (F=13.625, p=.000) among the groups in terms of performance abilities after the child CPR education. 3) There were no statistically significant differences (F=1.610, p=.207) among the groups in terms of technical accuracy of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation after the child CPR education 4) There were no statistically significant differences (F=1.484, p=.234) among the groups in terms of technical accuracy of chest compression after the child CPR education. Conclusion : The results indicate that childcare teachers can improve their performance abilities in child CPR when the instructors are active with their instructions and extra practice hours are secured through a VSI program. It's also needed to provide education with increasing concentration ratio about the items of lower knowledge points in order to help the teachers learn the accurate theory of child CPR. And there should be VSI programs of diverse conditions to increase the effects of child CPR training among childcare teachers.

  • This study examined the operation of a pressure gauge for measuring the internal pressure of a barrel. During the ammunition performance evaluation test, the internal pressure of the barrel was measured mainly using a copper crusher gauge. The internal piezo gauge (IPG) was used to replace the pressure measurement method, and the test results were analyzed to verify the operability of the IPG. For verification, actual shooting test data were used, and a t-test was used to analyze the results. The 155MM KH179 and M119 series propellant were used for the test equipment and ammunition. The results confirmed that there was no difference between the mean values of the two data results at a significance level of 5% for the data values between the copper gauge and the IPG. The use of the IPG was verified by replacing the existing copper gauge to measure the internal pressure of the barrel, and it was confirmed that the application width could be widened in terms of diversity of test measurement methods. Based on the results of this test, it can be applied to the compression measurement test of various types of ammunition in addition to the propellant charges.

  • In resolution-constrained quantization, the size of Voronoi cell varies depending on probability density function of the input data, which causes large amount of distortion outliers. We propose a vector quantization method that reduces distortion outliers by combining the generalized Lloyd algorithm (GLA) and the cell-size constrained vector quantization (CCVQ) scheme. The training data are divided into the inside and outside regions according to the size of Voronoi cell, and consequently CCVQ and GLA are applied to each region, respectively. As CCVQ is applied to the densely populated region of the source instead of GLA, the number of centroids for the outside region can be increased such that distortion outliers can be decreased. In real-world environment, source mismatch between training and test data is inevitable. For the source mismatch case, the proposed algorithm improves performance in terms of average distortion and distortion outliers.

  • All CCD pixels do not react uniformly even if the light of same radiance enters into the camera. This comes from the different camera optical characteristics, the read-out characteristics, the pixel own characteristics and so on. Usually, the image data of satellite camera can be corrected by the various image-processing methods in the ground. However, sometimes, the in-orbit correction is needed to get the higher quality image. Especially high frequency pixel correction in the middle of in-orbit mission is needed because the in-orbit data compression with the high frequency loss is essential to transmit many data in real time due to the limited RF bandwidth. In this case, this high frequency correction can prevent have to have any unnecessary high frequency loss. This in-orbit correction can be done by the specific correction table, which consists of the gain and the offset correction value for each pixel. So, it is very important to get more accurate correction table for good correction results. This paper shows the new algorithm to get accurate pixel correction table. This algorithm shall be verified theoretically and also verified with the various simulation and the test results.

  • The thermodynamic second law analysis, which means available energy or exergy analysis, for the indicated performance of Otto cycle engine has been carried out. Each operating process of the engine is simplified and modeled into the thermodynamic cycle. The calculation of the lost work and exergy through each process has been done with the thermodynamic relations and experimental data. The experimental data were measured from the test of single cylinder Otto cycle engine which operated at 2500 rpm, WOT(Wide Open Throttle) and MBT(Minimum advanced spark timing for Best Torque) condition with different fuels: gasoline, methanol and mixture of butane-methanol called M90. Experimental data such as cylinder pressure, air and fuel flow rate, exhaust gas temperature, inlet gas temperature and etc. were used for the analysis. The proposed model and procedure of the analysis are verified through the comparison of the work done in the study with experimental results. The calculated results show that the greatest lost work is generated during combustion process. And the lost work during expansion, exhaust, compression and induction process follows in order.
