POSINORMAL TERRACED MATRICES

  • This paper is a study of some properties of a collection of bounded linear operators resulting from terraced matrices M acting through multiplication on ${\ell}^2$; the term terraced matrix refers to a lower triangular infinite matrix with constant row segments. Sufficient conditions are found for M to be posinormal, meaning that $MM^*=M^*PM$ for some positive operator P on ${\ell}^2$; these conditions lead to new sufficient conditions for the hyponormality of M. Sufficient conditions are also found for the adjoint $M^*$ to be posinormal, and it is observed that, unless M is essentially trivial, $M^*$ cannot be hyponormal. A few examples are considered that exhibit special behavior.

  • In this paper, we present a decentralized adaptive neural net(NN) controller for the transient stability and voltage regulation of a multimachine power system. First, an adaptively input-output linearizing controller using NN is designed to eliminate the nonlinearities and interactions between generators. Then, a robust control term which bounds terminal voltage to a neighborhood of the operating point within the desired value is introduced using only local information. In addition, we consider input saturation which exists in the SCR amplifier and prove that the stability of the overall closed-loop system is maintained regardless of the input saturation. The design procedure is tested on a two machine infinite bus power system.

Stochastic along-wind response of nonlinear structures to quadratic wind pressure

  • The effects of the nonlinear (quadratic) term in wind pressure have been analyzed in many papers with reference to linear structural models. The present paper addresses the problem of the response of nonlinear structures to stochastic nonlinear wind pressure. Adopting a single-degree-of-freedom structural model with polynomial nonlinearity, the solution is obtained by means of the moment equation approach in the context of It$\hat{o}$'s stochastic differential calculus. To do so, wind turbulence is idealized as the output of a linear filter excited by a Gaussian white noise. Response statistical moments are computed for both the equivalent linear system and the actual nonlinear one. In the second case, since the moment equations form an infinite hierarchy, a suitable iterative procedure is used to close it. The numerical analyses regard a Duffing oscillator, and the results compare well with Monte Carlo simulation.

  • This paper primarily discusses and proves the Hyers-Ulam stability of three types of polynomial equations: xn+a1x+a0 = 0, anxn+⋯+a1x+a0 = 0, and the infinite series equation: ${\sum\limits_{i=0}^{\infty}}\;a_ix^i=0$, in dislocated quasi-metric spaces under certain conditions by constructing contraction mappings and using fixed-point methods. We present an example to illustrate that the Hyers-Ulam stability of polynomial equations in dislocated quasi-metric spaces do not work when the constant term is not equal to zero.

Theory of Light Scattering by a Circular Cylinder over a Planar Substrate: Normal Incidence

  • The problem of polarized light scattering by a cylinder on or close to a planar substrate is analytically solved. The light is assumed to be normally incident to the axis of the cylinder. Transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) polarizations are treated separately. The solution for each polarization is composed of a coupled set of linear equations which couples the scattering characteristics of the cylinder and the planar substrate. The coupling comes from the scattering by the planar substrate and by the cylinder. The solution of the coupled set of equations obtained by iterative substitution consists of infinite series, where each term represents the contribution of single and multiple scatterings of all orders.

Experimental Study of Leaching Phenomena of Cs-137 From a Cement Matrix Generated at PWR Plant (가압 경수로에서 생성된 시멘트 고화체로부터 Cs-137의 용출 현상의 실험적 연구)

  • Experimental study for the leaching behavior of Cs-137 was carried out using the simulated evaporator bottom product of PWR plant. The method of leach test proposed by the IAEA was partially modified using ANS method. The effect of various factors, i.e., sampling method, curing temperature, curing time, leachant temperature, vermiculite addition and volume-to-surface ratio, was considered in this experiment. Diffusion model in semi-infinite slab was in a good agreement with the data obtained from 4-weeks cured specimens. The effective diffusion coefficient of the specimens which were cured at the temperature of $24^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks was found to be $1.20{\sim}1.47{\times}10^{-11}cm^2/sec$. With the experimentally obtained diffusion coefficient ($1.47{\times}10^{-11}cm^2/sec$), long-term prediction for the leaching of Cs-137 was carried out using finite-slab approximation. The estimated fraction of Cs-137 which remains in the environment is found to be less than 0.25 percent of initial amount after 100 years. About 25 years after the beginning of leaching, its fractional amount in the environment reachs the maximum value, 0.66 percent of initial amount.

One-dimensional Analytical Solutions for Diffusion from a Low-permeability Layer (1차원 해석해를 이용한 저투수성 매체에서의 확산에 관한 연구)

  • One-dimensional analytical solutions were used for forward and back diffusion of trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in a single system with high- and low-permeability layers. Concentration profiles in a low-permeability layer, diffusive fluxes at the interface between the high- and low-permeability layers, and contaminant persistence in the high-permeability layer due to back diffusion were simulated with a comparison of semi-infinite and finite analytical solutions. In order to validate the analytical solutions used in this study, the results of one-dimensional analytical solutions developed by Yang et al. (2015) were compared with Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency coefficient (NSE). When compared with Yang et al. (2015), the analytical solutions used in this study showed good agreements (NSE = 0.99). When compared with semi-infinite analytical solutions, TCE and PCE concentration profiles in the low-permeability layer, the diffusive fluxes, and the contaminant tailings of the high-permeability layer were underestimated. In order to determine the appropriate analytical solutions based on the effective diffusion coefficient, the thickness of the low-permeability layer, and the diffusion time in the TCE and PCE contaminated site, a term of dimensionless diffusion length (Zd) was used. If the Zd is less than 0.7, the semi-infinite solutions can be used to simulate accurate concentration profiles in low-permeability layers. If the Zd is greater than 0.7, the reliability of simulations may be improved by using the finite solutions.

Bounary Element Analysis of Thermal Stress Intensity Factors for Cusp Cracks (커스프 균열에 대한 열응력세기 계수의 경계요소해석)

  • In case that the body with a cusp crack is under uniform heat flow, thermal stress intensity factors are calculated by using boundary element method with linearized body force term. The crack surface is under insulated or fixed temperature condition and the types of crack are symmetric lip and airfoil cusps. Numerical values of thermal stress intensity factors for a Griffith crack and cusp cracks in infinite bodies are proved to be in good agreement within .+-.5% when compared with the previous numerical and exact solutions, respectively. The thermal stress intensity factors for symmetric lip and airfoil cusp cracks in finite bodies are calculated about various effective crack lengths, configuration parameters, and heat flow directions. With the same crack surface thermal boundary conditions, heat flow directions and crack lengths, there are no appreciable differences in variations of thermal stress intensity factors between symmetric lip and airfoil cusp cracks. The signs of thermal stress intensity factors for each cusp crack are changed with each crack surface thermal boundary condition.

  • A new simple control method for active power filter, which can realize the complete compensation of harmonics is proposed. In the proposed scheme, a model-based digital current control strategy is presented. The proposed control system is designed and implemented in a form referred to as internal model control structure. This method provides a convenient way for parameterizing the controller in term of the nominal system model, including time-delays. As a result, the resulting controller parameters are directly set based on the power circuit parameters, which make tuning of the controllers straightforward task. In the proposed control algorithm, overshoots and oscillations due to the computation time delay is prevented by explicit incorporating of the delay in the controller transfer function. In addition, a new compensating current reference generator employing resonance model implemented by a DSP(Digital Signal Processor) is introduced. Resonance model has an infinite gain at resonant frequency, and it exhibits a band-pass filter. Consequently, the difference between the instantaneous load current and the output of this model is the current reference signal for the harmonic compensation.

Quantifying the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership

  • We assess the outcomes for the negotiating parties in the Trans-Pacific Partnership if the remaining eleven parties go ahead with the agreement as negotiated without the United States, as compared to the outcomes under the original twelve-member agreement signed in October 2016. We find that the eleven-party agreement, now renamed as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), is a much smaller deal than the twelve-party one, but that some parties do better without the United States in the deal, in particular those in the Western Hemisphere - Canada, Mexico, Chile, and Peru. For the politically relevant medium term, the United States stands to be less well-off outside the TPP than inside. Since provisional deals can be in place for a long time, the results of this study suggest that the eleven parties are better off to implement the CPTPP, leaving aside the controversial governance elements, the implications of which for national interests are unclear and which, in any event, may be substantially affected by parallel bilateral negotiations between individual CPTPP parties and the United States.
