Estimation of cable tension through proper measurements is one of the essential tasks in evaluating the safety of cable structures. In this paper, a study on cable tension estimation using the built-in accelerometer and camera in a smartphone was conducted. For the experimental study, visual displacement measurement using a smartphone camera and acceleration measurement using a built-in accelerometer were performed in the cable-stayed bridge model. The estimated natural frequencies and transformed tensions from these measurements were compared with the theoretical values and results from the normal visual displacement method. Through comparison, it can be seen that the error between the method using the smartphone and the normal visual displacement is sufficiently small to be acceptable. It has also been shown that those errors are much smaller than the difference between the values calculated by the theoretical model. These results show that the deviation according to the type of measurement method is not large and it is rather important to use an appropriate mathematical model. In conclusion, in the case of cable tension estimation, it can be said that the visual displacement measurement and acceleration using a smartphone can be a sufficiently applicable method, just like the normal visual displacement method. It is also noteworthy that the smartphone accelerometer has a larger magnitude error and has more limitations such as high-frequency sampling instability compared to the visual displacement method, but shows almost the same performance as the visual displacement method in this cable tension estimation.

Mooring systems are among the most important elements employed to control the motion of floating offshore structures on the sea. Considering the use of polymer material, a new method is proposed to address the creep characteristics rather than the method of using a tension load cell for measuring the tension of the mooring line. This study uses a synthetic mooring rope made from a polymer material, which usually consists of three parts: center, eye, and splice, and which makes a joint for two successive ropes. We integrate the optical sensor into the synthetic mooring ropes to measure the rope tension. The different structure of the mooring line in the longitudinal direction can be used to measure the loads with the entire mooring configuration in series, which can be defined as SMART (Smart Mooring and Riser Truncation) mooring. To determine the characteristics of the basic SMART mooring, a SMART mooring with a diameter of 3 mm made of three different polymer materials is observed to change the wavelength that responds as the length changes. By performing the longitudinal tension experiment using three different SMART moorings, it was confirmed that there were linear wavelength changes in the response characteristics of the 3-mm-diameter SMART moorings. A 54-mm-diameter SMART mooring is produced to measure the response of longitudinal tension on the center, eye, and splice of the mooring, and a longitudinal tension of 100 t in step-by-step applied for the Maintained Test and Fatigue Cycle Test is conducted. By performing a longitudinal tension experiment, wavelength changes were detected in the center, eye, and splice position of the SMART moorings. The results obtained from each part of the installed sensors indicated a different strain measurement depending on the position of the SMART moorings. The variation of the strain measurement with the position was more than twice the result of the difference measurement, while the applied external load increased step-by-step. It appears that there is a correlation with an externally generated longitudinal tensional force depending on the cross-sectional area of each part of the SMART mooring.
In cable structure maintenance, particularly for cable-stayed bridges, cable safety assessment relies on estimating cable tension. Conventionally, in Japan, cable tension is estimated from the natural frequencies of the cable using the higher-order vibration method. In recent years, dampers have been installed on cables to reduce cable vibrations. Because the higher-order vibration method is a method for damper-free cables, the damper must be removed to measure the natural frequencies of a cable without a damper. However, cables on some cable-stayed bridges have two dampers: one on the girder side and another on the tower side. Notably, removing and reinstalling the damper on the tower side are considerably more time- and labor-intensive. This paper introduces a tension estimation method for cables with two dampers, using natural frequencies. The proposed method was validated through numerical simulation and experiment. In the numerical tests, without measurement error in the natural frequencies, the maximum estimation error among 100 models was 3.3%. With measurement error of 2%, the average estimation error was within 5%, with a maximum error of 9%. The proposed method has high accuracy because the higher-order vibration method for a damper-free cable still has an estimation error of 5%. The experimental verification emphasizes the importance of accurate damper modeling, highlighting potential discrepancies between existing damper design formula and actual damper behavior. By revising the damper formula, the proposed method achieved accurate cable tension estimation, with a maximum estimation error of approximately 10%.

A high precision hot strip width control method has been developed in this study by applying interstand looper tension measuring system at finishing mill stands. As with deviation of hot rolled steel strip is closely related to abnormal increase in the interstand strip tension, on-line measuring device of looped tension and data analyzing system was developed in this study. To determine dominant factors that will cause local width shortage, the logged data sets of bar width, bar thickness, looper tension, and strip thickness along the strip length were correlated with the data set of strip width change. With the result of the correlation analysis, existing sequence control logic and parameters for looper actuator were modified for strip width quality and the gains of the looper control were refined for the stable operation during the full passage of rolled strip. The on-line tension measurement and tension feedback control for looper system improved strip travelling stability and reduced strip width deviation in the srip top end region.

To prevent cargo accidents by repeated loads, a continuous monitoring for securing rope or additional safety measures are needed, but most of prevention measures have been conducted only by operator's own experience not a quantitative assessment. Hence, the Load-Displacement curve and approximation formula of securing rope were drawn in this research for a quantitative assessment and simplified measurement on a tension of securing rope using a tensiometer. Moreover, a com parison was conducted between m easuring tension and calculated tension on securing rope with portable tensiometer, 'Load-Displacement' approximation formula. The calculated tension of securing rope is obtained 153.3kfg using the formula and that result has not much difference with initial tension 150.0kgf. Lastly, an analysis of the characteristics of various ropes was suggested to enhance the reliability about quantitative assessment of securing rope's tension through further research.
A turn buckle inserted between tension members that sustain the structural loads in a suspension structure system is a device that is capable of adjusting the tensile force. The tension member is an important element of a tension structure, but no simple and economical method of measuring a tensile force applied to members has been proposed yet. Thus, a turn buckle for measuring the tensile force in a tension member was developed in this study. The turn buckles of the measurement limit loads of 100kN, 200kN, and 300kN were tested through a theoretical analysis and a finite element analysis. There was no significant difference in the results of the theoretical analysis, FEA, and the test. In addition, the ultimate strength of the turn buckle using FEA showed that a new turn buckle is sufficiently safe to use even when there is a five-times overload in the measurement limit load.
