  • In this paper, the importance of the size effects on the strength ratio is demonstrated by numerical results. The rate of decrease of tensile strength is for glass fiber, based on the experience of a composite manufacturing specialist. For other material, similar procedure may be used until detailed test result on such material is available. The strength criteria used is that of Tsai-Wu for stress space. The factors influencing the ratio are, reducing the tensile strength alone or both tensile and compression strengths, selection of the normalized interaction term, that is, the generalized Von Mises criterion or the Hill's criterion, and the status of applied stresses. Some of the numerical results are presented for a guideline for the furture study.

  • In this study, the effects of weld parameters on nugget size and tensile-shear strength of welding joint in electrical resistance spot welding of galvanized DP 600 steel sheets having 1.2 mm were investigated. Taguchi design method has been employed to examine the effects of five parameters of welding current, electrode pressure, welding time, clamping time and holding time by using the $L_{27}(5^3)$ orthogonal array. Results showed that the most effective parameters on tensile shear strength and the nugget size ratio (hn/dn) were found as welding current and welding time, whereas electrode pressure, clamping time and holding time were less effective factors. Max. 545 MPa strength was obtained through proposed optimum conditions by Taguchi technique.

  • The demand for elastic pavement, providing comfort for pedestrians is expected to increase continuously but the lack of a standard for materials mixing ratio, that is, the optimal mixing ratio between ERDM chip and polyurethane binder, is still in a trial and error stage. This study aimed at recommending an optimal mixing ratio for elastic landscape pavement through a coherence and resilience test depending on ratio. The test result is outlined as follows. In a tensile strength test, samples B and C indicated a close positive relationship between the binder mixing ratio and tensile strength, indicating that the higher the mixing ratio the higher the tensile strength. In a hardness test, none of samples A, B or C indicated a statistical interrelationship between the binder mixing ratio and hardness. That is, the hardness of the elastic pavement material remained unchanged, irrespective of the binder mixing ratio. In a resilience lest, Samples A and B indicated a close negative interrelation between mixing ratio and resilience, indicating that the higher the mixing ratio, the lower the resilience. Upon analyzing the optimal mixing ratio based on test results, an increase in tensile strength began to slow at a 20% mixing ratio, while resilience began to reduce rapidly at 22%, Thus the optimal range for a mixing ration appeared to be 20~22%. The outcome of this study could to provide guidance for improving the elasticity and stability of elastic pavement.

  • In this paper, mechanical properties of the high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete with simple mixed design method was investigated. Experimental tests were performed as such compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and density of high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete. The 28 days compressive strength of high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete with the LC replacement ratio of $100\%$ reduces about $31\%$ but LF replacement ratio of $100\%$ increase about $20\%$ compared that of the control concrete. The structural efficiency of high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete increase with proportional to the replacement into of LF. The relationship between the splitting tensile strength and 28 days compressive strength can be represented by the equation $f_s=0.076f_{ck}+0.5582$. The modulus of elasticity was found to be lower than that of normal weight concrete, ranging form 24 to 33 GPa.

  • In a preceding study(1), the using method of garnet powder has been studies through the various investigation of basic material properties on garnet powder, industrial by-products generated in Yungju, Kyungpook. In this study, the various properties of concrete mixed with garnet powder are examined as following condition : Unit weight of water (170kg/㎥), water-binder ratio W/B (53, 55 and 58%), sand-aggregate ratio (S/A) (43, 45 and 48%), substitutional ratio of garnet powder of 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20%. Slump increased a little as the substitutional ratio of garnet increased. Air content decreased a little at the substitutional ratio of 10%. or more. Though there is a little difference in compressive strength according to the W/B and the substitutional ratio, compressive strength of concrete using garnet exceeded that of plain concrete a little in the range of the substitutional ration of 5 to 15%. Also, There is a similar tendency in the tensile and flexural strength. Therefore, the use of garnet powder with industrial by-products is expected to improve the workability and the strength of concrete.

  • Ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) is characterized by a post-cracking residual tensile strength with a large tensile strain as well as a high compressive strength. To determine a material tensile strength of UHPFRC, three-point loading test on notched prism and direct tensile test on doubly notched plate were compared and then the design tensile strength is decided. Shear tests on nine I-shaped beams with varied types of fiber volume ratio, shear span ratio and size effect were conducted to investigate shear behavior in web. From the test results, the stress redistribution ability represented as diagonal cracked zone was quantified by inclination of principal stress in web. The test results shows that the specimens were capable of resistance to shear loading without stirrup in a range of large deformation and the strength increase with post-cracking behavior is stable. However at the ultimate state all test specimens failed as a crack localization in the damaged zone and the shear strength of specimens is affected by shear span ratio and effective depth. Strength predictions show that the existing recommendations should be modified considering shear span ratio and effective depth as design parameters.

  • With respect to the tensile strength of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island, a comparative study was conducted using the existing research results and the test results performed in this study. In addition, the characteristics and effectiveness of the cohesion and internal friction angle estimated from the Brazilian tensile strength and unconfined compressive strength of Jeju volcanic rocks were investigated. As results, the Brazilian tensile strength of Jeju volcanic rocks was closely related to absorption, and decreased exponentially as the absorption increased. It was confirmed that the internal friction angle was closely related to the ratio of unconfined compressive strength to Brazilian tensile strength (σc / σt), and increased logarithmically as the ratio of σc / σt increased. In addition, the ratios of σc / σt of Jeju volcanic rocks were in the range of 5~20 depending on the magnitude of internal friction angle. In the case of cohesion, it was closely related to the absorption and Brazilian tensile strength. The cohesion exponentially decreased as the absorption increased, such as the relation between the Brazilian tensile strength and absorption. It was confirmed that there was a linear relation between the cohesion and Brazilian tensile strength.

  • Polyacetals with melamine were investigated in terms of mechanical properties. It was found that tensile strength, impact strength and elongation were decreased with the increase of melamine content up to 30 par, flexural strength had no remarkable changes. For master-batch using polyurethane as carrier resin, in which the ratio of polyurethane to melamine was 2:1, tensile strength and flexural strength were decreased and impact strength remained unchanged with melamine me content.

  • The aims of this study was to determine the mechanical properties of steel-fiber reinforced concrete under direct tensile loading, and also to insestigate the mechanism fiber reinforcement in order to improve the possible applications of steel-fiber reinforced concrete. In this study the major variables of experimental investigation were fiber conntents, and the lengths and diameters of fibers. The major results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. The strength, elastic modulus and energy absorption capability of steel-fiber reinforced concrete under direct tensile loading were improved as increasing of fiber contents. 2. The direct tensile strength of steel-fiber reinforced concrete was not influenced by the lengths of fiber, but was decreased as increasing of fiber diameters. 3. The direct tensile strength of steel-fiber reinforced concrete was not influenced by the fiber aspect-ratio, but this was because the fiber contents were below the critical value of fiber content. 4. The correlation of direct tensile strength and combined parameter, Vf l/d, was not good. 5. Mutiple cracking and post-crack resistance were investigated at stress-strain curves in direct tensile test. 6. The effect of fiber reinforcement can be influenced by fiber orientation and the bond strength between fiber and matrix. 7. The improvement of mechanical properties of steel-fiber reinforced concrete under direct tensile loading can be theoretically explained by the concept of composite materials.
