Recently, much attention has focused on the permanent deformation of roads in hot summer and cracks in cold winter, which are detrimental to safe driving. This leads to necessity of modification of asphalt to resist those deformation. In this study, a type of modified asphalt was prepared by addition of a photoinitiator which is activated by ultraviolet lay. The mechanical and rheololgical properties of photoinitiator-modified asphalt were examined using UTM and rheometer. Results showed that the modified asphalt was effected by ultraviolet and thus tensile strength and storage modulus increased, due to molecular attraction, with initiator content and irradiation dose. Thermal analysis showed less weight loss upon photoinitiator-modification and this indicated that the molecular attraction is the result of cross linking reaction between asphalt molecules induced by photoinitiator. According to long term ultraviolet curing test, properties of the photoinitiator-modified asphalt did not decrease or even increase for 20 years. This indicates that useful life of the asphalt could be extended by addition of photoinitiator.
Paved roads are suffered from the permanent plastic deformation in hot summer and cracks in cold winter, which are detrimental to safe driving. This leads to necessity of modification of asphalt to resist those deformation. In this study, two kinds of modifiers were examined; organic polymers and a photoinitiator which is activated by ultraviolet lay. The mechanical and rheololgical properties of modified asphalts were examined using UTM and rheometer. Results showed that the properties were varied depending on the types of polymer and irradiation time. UV irradiation increased the tensile strength and storage modulus of thermoplastic polymer-modified asphalt, however UV was not effective on thermoset polymer. According to long term ultraviolet curing test, properties of the polymer/photoinitiator-modified asphalt did not decrease, but rather increase for 20 years. This indicates that the useful life of the asphalt could be extended by addition of photoinitiator.

In this study, the experimental and analytical study were performed on the location of longitudinal cracks in the middle of underground box structures. The location where the longitudinal cracking occurred was investigated that the overlapping joint of the rebar and the section of maximum tensile stress generated. Using the finite element analysis, the strength reduction ratio of the rebar was estimated by lack of overlap joint length. As the result of adequacy investigation for the length of the overlap joint presented in the design criteria, it was analytically proved that the lack of the overlap joint length could be cause the decreasing cross-sectional force and concrete cracking. As the result of this study, the adequacy of the overlapping criterion in the current design criteria was confirmed based on the finite element analysis and actual field case. In the case of overlapping joints installed in inappropriate position, it was considered that a long term crack control would be need to ensure the sufficient safety factor for the designed cross-sectional force.
Flat rolling of wire is an industrial process used to manufacture electrical flat wire, medical catheters, springs, piston segments and automobile parts, among other products. In a multi-step wire flat rolling process, a wire with a circular crosssection is rolled at room temperature between two flat rolls in several passes to achieve the desired thickness to width ratio. To manufacture a flat wire with a homogeneous microstructure, mechanical and metallurgical properties with an appropriate pass schedule, this study investigated the effect of each pass schedule (1stand ~ 4stand) on the microstructures, mechanical properties and widths of cold rolled high carbon steel wires using four-pass flat rolling process. The evolutions of the microstructures and mechanical properties of the widths of cold rolled wires during three different pass schedules of the flat rolling process of high carbon wires were investigated, and the results were compared with those for a conventional eight-pass schedule. In the width of cold rolled wires, three different pass schedules are clearly distinguished and discussed. The experimental conditions were the same rolling speed, rolling force, roll size, tensile strength of the material and friction coefficient. The experimental results showed that the four-pass flat cold rolling process was feasible for production of designed wire without cracks when appropriate pass schedules were applied.
Recently, polypropylene fiber reinforced mortar and concrete as civil and architectural
materials have been used in major countries in the world.
Polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete has many advantages in terms of economical
aspect, chemical stability and durability. It has been reported that polypropylene fiber
can control restrained tensile stresses and cracks and increase toughness, resistance to
impact, corrosion, fatigue and durability.
The purpose of the present study is, therefore, to investigate the strength as well as
many mechanical characteristics including toughness and shrinkage control properties. A
specially devjsed shrinkage test has been applied to measure the crack control
characteristics of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete. The present study indicates
that the polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete curbs greatly the crack occurrence due
to shrinkage and enhances toughness resistance. The present study provides a firm base
for the efficient use of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete in actual construction such
as pavements and slab structures.
Existing microplane models for concrete use three-dimensional spherical microplanes in the analysis of two-dimensional planar members as well as three-dimensional members. Also, they do not accurately describe the post-cracking behavior of reinforced concrete in tension-compression. In this study, a new microplane model is developed to overcome the disadvantages of the existing models. Instead of the spherical microplanes, the proposed microplane model uses disk microplanes involving a less number of microplanes and two-dimensional stresses and strains. As the result, the proposed model is more effective in numerical calculations. Also, the concept of the strain boundary is introduced to describe accurately the compressive behavior of reinforced concrete with tensile cracks in tension-compression. The validity of the proposed model is verified by comparison with existing experiments. In this paper, the microplane model and the numerical techniques involved in the finite element analysis are described in detail.
Static loading test was performed on a composite girder with an I-shaped steel girder and SUPER concrete on the top of the steel in order to evaluate flexural behavior characteristics. Total length of the test specimen was 25m long and the depth was 786mm including compressive concrete section('casing' hereafter) with 80MPa strength. 4-point loading on simply-supported beam was applied up to 2,010kN. Results showed that yield strength at tensile steel was 2.7 times greater than service load and the ratio of ductility was 1.481. No cracks were found on the casing surface and the relative slip between different sections was insignificant.

Creep damage using a reference stress(RS) was analyzed for type 316LN stainless steel. The generalized K-R equation was reconstructed into the RS equation using a critical stress value $\sigma$. The RS equation was derived from the critical stress in failure time $t_f$ instead of material damage parameter $\omega$, which indicates the critical condition of collapse or approach to gross instability of materials during creep. For obtaining the reference stress, a series of creep tests and tensile tests were conducted with at 55$0^{\circ}C$ and $600^{\circ}C$. The stress-time data obtained from creep tests were applied to the RS equations to characterize the creep damage of type 316LN stainless steel. The value of creep constant r with stress levels was about 18 at 55$0^{\circ}C$ and 21 at $600^{\circ}C$. This value was almost similar with r = 24 in the K-R equation, which was obtained by using damage parameter $\omega$. Relationship plots of creep failure strain and life fraction $(t_f /t_r)$ were also obtained with different λ values. The RS equation was therefore more convenient than the generalized K-R equation, because the measuring process to quantify the damage parameter $\omega$ such as voids or micro cracks in crept materials was omitted. The RS method can be easily used by designers and plant operator as a creep design tool.

High pressure die casting is one of the precision casting methods. It is highly productivity and suitable for manufacturing components with complex shapes and accurate dimensions. Recently, there has been increasing demand for efficient heat dissipation components, to control the heat generated by devices, which directly affects the efficiency and life of the product. Die cast aluminum alloys with high thermal conductivity are especially needed for this application. In this study, the influence of elements added to the die cast aluminum alloy on its thermal conductivity was evaluated. The results showed that Mn remarkably deteriorated the thermal conductivity of the aluminum alloy. When Cu content was increased, the tensile strength of cast aluminum alloy increased, showing 1 wt% of Cu ensured the minimum mechanical properties of the cast aluminum. As Si content increased, the flow length of the alloy proportionally increased. The flow length of aluminum alloy containing 2 wt% Si was about 85% of that of the ALDC12 alloy. A heat dissipation component was successfully fabricated using an optimized composition of Al-1 wt%Cu-0.6 wt%Fe-2 wt%Si die casting alloy without surface cracks, which were turned out as intergranular cracking originated from the solidification contraction of the alloy with Si composition lower than 2 wt%.

Substitution of natural fine aggregates with industrial by-products like precious slag balls (PS Balls) offers various advantages like technical, economic and environmental which are very important in the present era of sustainability in construction industry. PS balls are manufactured by subjecting steel slag to slag atomizing Technology (SAT) which imparts them the desirable characteristics of fine aggregates. The main objective of this research paper is to assess the feasibility of producing good quality concrete by using PS balls, to identify the potential benefits by their incorporation and to provide solution for increasing their utilization in concrete applications. The study investigates the effect of PS balls as partial replacement of fine aggregates in various percentages (20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%) on mechanical properties of concrete such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength. The optimum mix was found to be at 40% replacement of PS balls with maximum strength of 62.89 MPa at 28 days curing. Permeability of concrete was performed and it resulted in a more durable concrete with replacement of PS balls at 40% and 100% as fine aggregates. These two specific values were considered as optimum replacement is 40% and also the maximum possible replacement is 100%. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was done and it was found that the PS balls in concrete were unaffected and with optimum percentage of PS balls as fine aggregates in concrete resulted in good strength and less cracks. Hence, it is possible to produce good workable concrete with low water to cement ratio and higher strength concrete by incorporating PS balls.
