This paper proposes an automatic highlight building algorithm for soccer video by using the structural characteristics of broadcasted sports video that an interesting (or important) event (such as goal or foul) in sports video has a continuous replay shot surrounded by gradual shot change effect like wipe. This shot editing rule is used in this paper to analyze the structure of broadcated soccer video and extracts shot involving the important events to build a highlight. It first uses the spatial-temporal image of video to detect wipe transition effects and zoom out/in shot changes. They are used to detect the replay shot. However, using spatial-temporal image alone to detect the wipe transition effect requires too much computational resources and need to change algorithm if the wipe pattern is changed. For solving these problems, a two-pass detection algorithm and a pixel sub-sampling technique are proposed in this paper. Furthermore, to detect the zoom out/in shot change and replay shots more precisely, the green-area-ratio and the motion energy are also computed in the proposed scheme. Finally, highlight shots composed of event and player shot are extracted by using these pre-detected replay shot and zoom out/in shot change point. Proposed algorithm will be useful for web services or broadcasting services requiring abstracted soccer video.
General reliability assessment of levees embankment is performed with safety factors for rainfall characteristics and hydrologic and hydraulic parameters, based on the results of deterministic analysis. The safety factors are widely employed in the field of engineering handling model parameters and the diversity of material properties, but cannot explain every natural phenomenon. Uncertainty of flood analysis and related parameters by introducing stochastic method rather than deterministic scheme will be required to deal with extreme weather and unprecedented flood due to recent climate change. As a consequence, stochastic-method-based measures considering parameter uncertainty and related factors are being established. In this study, a variety of dimensionless cumulative rainfall curve for typhoon and monsoon season of July to September with generation method of stochastic temporal variation is generated by introducing Monte Carlo method and applied to the risk assessment of levee embankment using reliability index. The result of this study reflecting temporal and regional characteristics of a rainfall can be used for the establishment of flood defence measures, hydraulic structure design and analysis on a watershed.
Error concealment plays an important role in combating transmission errors. Methods of error concealment which produce better quality are generally of higher complexity, thus making some of the more sophisticated algorithms is not suitable for real-time applications. In this paper, we develop temporal and spatial error resilient video encoding and data hiding approach to facilitate the error concealment at the decoder. Block interleaving scheme is introduced to isolate erroneous blocks caused by packet losses for spatial area of error resilience. For temporal area of error resilience, data hiding is applied to the transmission of parity bits to protect motion vectors. To do error concealment quickly, a set of edge features extracted from a block is embedded imperceptibly using data hiding into the host media and transmitted to decoder. If some part of the media data is damaged during transmission, the embedded features are used for concealment of lost data at decoder. This method decreases a complexity of error concealment by reducing the estimation process of lost data from neighbor blocks. The proposed data hiding method of parity bits and block features is not influence much to the complexity of standard encoder. Experimental results show that proposed method conceals properly and effectively burst errors occurred on transmission channel like Internet.
In network delivery of compressed video, packets may be lost if the channel is unreliable like Internet. Such losses tend to of cur in burst like continuous bit-stream error. In this paper, we propose an effective error-concealment approach to which an error resilient video encoding approach is applied against burst errors and which reduces a complexity of error concealment at the decoder using data hiding. To improve the performance of error concealment, a temporal and spatial error resilient video encoding approach at encoder is developed to be robust against burst errors. For spatial area of error concealment, block shuffling scheme is introduced to isolate erroneous blocks caused by packet losses. For temporal area of error concealment, we embed parity bits in content data for motion vectors between intra frames or continuous inter frames and recovery loss packet with it at decoder after transmission While error concealment is performed on error blocks of video data at decoder, it is computationally costly to interpolate error video block using neighboring information. So, in this paper, a set of feature are extracted at the encoder and embedded imperceptibly into the original media. If some part of the media data is damaged during transmission, the embedded features can be extracted and used for recovery of lost data with bi-direction interpolation. The use of data hiding leads to reduced complexity at the decoder. Experimental results suggest that our approach can achieve a reasonable quality for packet loss up to 30% over a wide range of video materials.
There is the temporal correlation of the video sequence between the motion vector of current block and the motion vector of the previous block. If we can obtain useful and enough information from the motion vector of the same coordinate block of the previous frame, the total number of search points used to find the motion vector of the current block may be reduced significantly. In this paper, we propose the block-matching motion estimation using an adaptive initial search point by the predicted motion information from the same block of the previous frame. And the first search point of the proposed algorithm is moved an initial point on the location of being possibility and the searching process after moving the first search point is processed according to the fast search pattern. Simulation results show that PSNR(Peak-to-Signal Noise Ratio) values are improved UP to the 1.05dB as depend on the image sequences and improved about 0.33~0.37dB on an average. Search times are reduced about 29~97% than the other fast search algorithms. Simulation results also show that the performance of the proposed scheme gives better subjective picture quality than the other fast search algorithms and is closer to that of the FS(Full Search) algorithm.
Rainfall observation using rain gage network or satellites includes the sampling error depending on the observation methods or plans. For example, the sampling using rain gages is continuous in time but discontinuous in space, which is nothing but the source of the sampling error. The sampling using satellites is the reverse case that continuous in space and discontinuous in time. The sampling error may be quantified by use of the temporal-spatial characteristics of rainfall and the sampling design. One of recent works on this problem was done by North and Nakamoto (1989), who derived a formulation for estimating the sampling error based on the temporal-spatial rainfall spectrum and the design scheme. The formula enables us to design an optimal rain gage network or a satellite operation plan providing the statistical characteristics of rainfall. In this paper the formula is reviewed and applied for the sampling error problems using several multi-dimensional precipitation models. The results show the limitation of the formulation, which cannot distinguish the model difference in case the model parameters can reproduce similar second order statistics of rainfall. The limitation can be improved by developing a new way to consider the higher order statistics, and eventually the probability density function (PDF) of rainfall.

Global circulation models (GCMs) have been used to study impact of climate change on water resources for hydrologic models as inputs. Recently, regional circulation models (RCMs) have been used widely for climate change study, but the RCMs have been rarely used in the climate change impacts on water resources in Korea. Therefore, this study is intended to use a set of climate scenarios derived by RegCM3 RCM ($27km{\times}27km$), which is operated by Korea Meteorological Administration. To begin with, the RCM precipitation data surrounding major rainfall stations are extracted to assess validation of the scenarios in terms of reproducing low frequency behavior. A comprehensive comparison between observation and precipitation scenario is performed through statistical analysis, wavelet transform analysis and EOF analysis. Overall analysis confirmed that the precipitation data driven by RegCM3 shows capabilities in simulating hydrological low frequency behavior and reproducing spatio-temporal patterns. However, it is found that spatio-temporal patterns are slightly biased and amplitudes (variances) from the RCMs precipitation tend to be lower than the observations. Therefore, a bias correction scheme to correct the systematic bias needs to be considered in case the RCMs are applied to water resources assessment under climate change.
For measuring the performance of passive sonars, we usually consider the maximum Detection Range (DR) under the environment and system parameters in operation. In shallow water, where sound waves inevitably interacts with sea surface or bottom, detection generally maintains up to the maximum range. In deep water, however, sound waves may not interact with sea surface or/and bottom, and thus there may exist shadow zones where sound waves can hardly reach. In this situation, DR alone may not completely define the performance of each sonar. For complete description of sonar performance, we employ the concept 'Robustness Of Detection (ROD)'. In the coastal region of the East Sea, the spatial variations of water masses have close relations with DR and ROD, where the two parameters show reverse spatial variations in general. The spatial and temporal analysis of the temperature by employing the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) shows that the 1-st mode represents typical pattern of seasonal variation and the 2-nd mode represents strength variations of mixed layers and currents. The two modes are estimated to explain about 92 % of the variations. Assuming two types of targets located at the depths of 5 m (shallow) and 100 m (deep), the passive sonar performance (DR) gives high negative correlations (about -0.9) with the first two modes. Most of temporal variations of temperature occur from the surface up to 200 m in the water column so that when we assume a target at 100 m, we can expect detection performance of little seasonal variations with passive sonars below 100 m.
One of the challenges in online community management is what level of perceived anonymity can be granted to encourage active participation from members while discouraging unhealthy activities. Few studies developed a scheme of anonymity and investigated how different levels of anonymity influence community activities. This study develops a classification scheme of anonymity encompassing the following three different levels : (1) real name(no anonymity), (2) nickname (partial anonymity), and (3) random assignment of a temporal ID (complete anonymity). Then, it examines how different levels of anonymity influence trust and perceived risk, which in turn affect virtual team performance. A series of laboratory experiments were performed, manipulating the levels of anonymity, in the context of well-structured communities that allow prior interactions among community members. The data was collected from 364 laboratory participants and analyzed using ANOVA and PLS. The results indicate that the difference of anonymity between (2) and (3) had not be significant and the only (1) could not guarantee the anonymity. The impact of anonymity on trust and perceived risk could not be significant in this situation. These findings could contribute to make more beneficial member identification strategies in online community practice.

When continuous media are transmitted over the communication networks, asynchrony which can not maintain temporal relationships among packets may occur due to a random transit delay. There exist two types of synchronization schemes ; for guaranteed or non-guaranteed resource networks. The former which applies a resource reservation technique maintains delay characteristics, however, the latter supply a best-effort service. In this paper, I propose a intra-media synchronization scheme to transmit continuous media on general networks not guaranteeing a bounded delay tome. The scheme controls transmission times of the packets by estimating next delay time with the delay distribution. So, the arriving packets may be maintained within a limited delay boundary, and playout will be performed after buffering to smoothen small delay variations. The continually increasing delay due to network overload causes buffer underflow at the receiver. To solve it, the transmitter is required to speed up instantaneously. Too much increase of transmission-rate may cause network congestion. At that time, the transmitter drops the current packet when informed excessive delay from the receiver.
