The combustion characteristics of anthracite, which follow a complex process with low reactivity, must be considered through the dynamic behavior of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation was performed to analyze the combustion characteristics of anthracite in a pilot scale 0.1 MWth Oxy-fuel circulating fluidized bed (Oxy-CFB) boiler. The 0.1MWth Oxy-CFB boiler is composed of combustor (0.15 m l.D., 10 m High), cyclone, return leg, and so on. To perform CFD analysis, a 3D simulation model reactor was designed and used. The anthracite used in the experiment has an average particle size of 1,070 ㎛ and a density of 2,326 kg/m3. The flow pattern of gas-solids inside the reactor according to the change of combustion environment from air combustion to oxygen combustion was investigated. At this time, it was found that the temperature distribution in air combustion and oxygen combustion showed a similar pattern, but the pressure distribution was lower in oxygen combustion. addition, since it has a higher CO2 concentration in oxygen combustion than in air combustion, it can be expected that carbon dioxide capture will take place actively. As a result, it was confirmed that this study can contribute to the optimized design and operation of a circulating fluidized bed reactor using anthracite.

This study was undertaken to develop a cascade-type continuous culture system (CCCS) that combines both ICT and biotechnology (BT), for the mass production of microalgae. This system is capable of maintaining the essential culture conditions of pH, temperature, carbon dioxide, and illuminance control, which are key parameters for the growth of microalgae, and is economical for producing microalgae regardless of the season or location. It has the added advantage of providing stable and high productivity. In the current study, this system was applied to culture microalgae for 71 days, with subsequent analysis of the experimental data. The initial O.D. of the culture measured from incubator 1 was 0.006. On the 71st day of culture, the O.D.s obtained were 0.399 (incubator 1), 0.961 (incubator 2), 0.795 (incubator 3), and 0.438 (incubator 4), thereby confirming the establishment of continuous culture. Thus, we present a smart-farm based on ISMC (in-situ monitoring and control) for a mass culture method. We believe that this developed technology is suitable for commercialization, and has the potential to be applied to hydroponics-based cultivation of microalgae and cultivation of high-value-added medicinal plants as well as other plants used in functional foods, cosmetics, and medical materials.
A kraft recovery boiler produces steam for power generation by the combustion of black liquor from the kraft pulping process. Since saturated steam became superheated in a superheater above the furnace, it is important to increase the heat exchange efficiency for the superheated steam production and power generation. A nose arch at the bottom of the superheater is important for blocking radiation from the furnace which causes corrosion of the superheater. But the nose arch is the main reason for creating a recirculation region and then decreasing the heat exchange efficiency by holding cold flue gas after the heat transfer to saturated steam. In this study, the size of recirculation region and the temperature of flue gas at the outlet were analyzed by the nose arch structure using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). As a result, when the nose arch angle changed from 106.5° (case 1) to 150° (case4), the recirculation region of flue gas decreased and the heat exchange efficiency between the flue gas and the steam increased by 10.3%.

Digestibility of pet food can affect the health of dog, especially of aged animals. To maintain the health of dogs in an overall good status it is necessary to provide nutritionally balanced food. For example, the digestibility of dogs was known to be decreased along aging. In addition, losing teethes is an often event in aged dogs that could induce a problem to eat a large size dry pet food. Nonetheless, few detailed information is available on the most suited feeding for aged dogs. As part of the nutritional study of food for aged dogs, in this study, we tested whether food type impacts on digestibility on adult versus senior dogs. The methodology to measure the digestibility of nutrients was chosen the index method using chromium oxide. Dogs were fed the same commercial dry or wet diets, which were supplemented with 0.5% chromium oxide. The wet food was prepared by adding twice volume of water in the dry food prior to incubated overnight (14-16 hours) at room temperature. After five days, their feces were collected up to a total weight of > 200 g which was the amount to analyze undigested nutrients in feces as 3 repeats. In the apparent total tract digestibility analysis of the experimental breed, no difference in the digestibility of crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, ash, and energy was observed regarding the moisture content of the food. Noteworthy, the digestibility of nitrogen free extract was significantly increased in senior dogs fed dry dog food compared with adult dogs fed the same diet, whereas no difference was observed between senior and adult dogs fed wet food. The small breed dogs showed similar results to the experimental breed dogs. However, the digestibility of crude fat was additionally affected by age and food type unlike the experimental breed dogs. This finding suggests that the food moisture content affects the digestibility of nutrients in dogs with aging. Hence, it may be helpful to determine the nutrient contents in foods for senior dogs depending on the food type.
The present study was performed to improve the technique used for fermenting the mushroom growth medium. Taxonomic analysis of 16S rDNA sequence from the predominant Bacillus strain CY-24 isolated during the fermentation phase of the rice straw medium identified it as Bacillus licheniformis. In addition, the growth environment of B. licheniformis was also examined in this study, which revealed the optimal growth temperature and pH to be 30 ℃ and 6.0, respectively. This study also revealed that carboxymethyl cellulase (CMCase) and polygalacturonase (PGase) enzymes isolated from B. licheniformis achieved their maximal activities at 50 ℃ and 60 ℃ respectively. Furthermore, the study confirmed that the two enzymes, i.e., CMCase and PGase in B. licheniformis are stable at temperatures above 60 ℃. The present study thus demonstrates that B. licheniformis CY-24 possesses excellent enzymatic properties. It also reveals that the action of enzymes during the production of growth mediums used for the cultivation of mushrooms is closely associated with the promotion of fermentation and softening of the rice straw. Overall, this study provides elementary information regarding the role of B. licheniformis enzymes during growth medium fermentation for Agaricus bisporus cultivation.
GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK2A) AMI (Advanced Meteorological Imager) Best Detector Select (BDS) map is pre-determined and uploaded before the satellite launch. After the launch, there is some possibility of a detector performance change driven by an abrupt temperature variation and thus the status of BDS map needs to be evaluated and updated if necessary. To investigate performance of entire elements of the detectors, AMI BDS analyses were conducted based on a technical note provided from the AMI vendor (L3HARRIS). The concept of the BDS analysis is to investigate the stability of signals from detectors while they are staring at targets (deep space and internal calibration target). For this purpose, Long Time Series (LTS) and Output Voltage vs. Bias Voltage (V-V) methods are used. The LTS for 30 secs and the V-V for two secs are spanned respectively for looking at the targets to compute noise components of detectors. To get the necessary data sets, these activities were conducted during the In-Orbit Test (IOT) period since a normal operation of AMI is stopped and special mission plans are commanded. With collected data sets during the GK2A IOT, AMI BDS map was intensively examined. It was found that about 1% of entire detector elements, which were evaluated at the ground test, showed characteristic changes and those degraded elements are replaced by alternative best ones. The stripping effects on AMI raw images due to the BDS problem were clearly removed when the new BDS map was applied.
Genetically modified (GM) crops have been developed worldwide through the recombinant DNA technology and commercialized by global agricultural companies. Until now, GM crops have not been cultivated commercially in Korea. Commercialization of GM crops requires a compulsory assessment of environmental risk associated with the release of GM crops. This study was conducted to evaluate the frequency of pollen mediated gene flow from Bt transgenic rice (Agb0101) to japonica non-GM rice (Nakdongbyeo), indica non-GM rice (IR36), and weedy rice (R55). A total of 729,917, 596,318 and 230,635 seeds were collected from Nakdongbyeo, IR36, and R55, respectively, which were planted around Agb0101. Selection of the hybrids was determined by repeated spraying of herbicide and Cry1Ac1 immunostrip assay. Finally, the hybrids were confirmed by PCR analysis using specific primer. The hybrids were found in all non-GM rice and out-crossing ranged from 0.0005% at IR36 to 0.0027% at Nakdongbyeo. All of hybrids were located within 1.2 m distance from the Agb0101 rice plot. The meteorological elements including rainfall and temperature during rice flowering time were found to be important factors to determine rice out-crossing rate. Consideration should be taken for many factors like the meteorological elements of field and physiological condition of crop to set up the safety management guideline to prevention of GM crops gene flow.

Reversible solid oxide fuel cell (ReSOC) system was integrated with waste steam for electrical energy storage in distributed energy storage application. Waste steam was utilized as external heat in SOEC mode for higher hydrogen production efficiency. Three system configurations were analyzed to evaluate techno-economic performance. The first system is a simple configuration to minimize the cost of balance of plant. The second system is the more complicated configuration with heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The third system is featured with HRSG and fuel recirculation by blower. Lumped models were used for system performance analyses. The ReSOC stack was characterized by applying area specific resistance value at fixed operating pressure and temperature. In economical assessment, the levelized costs of energy storage (LCOS) were calculated for three system configurations based on capital investment. The system lifetime was assumed 20 years with ReSOC stack replaced every 5 years, inflation rate of 2%, and capacity factor of 80%. The results showed that the exergy round-trip efficiency of system 1, 2, 3 were 47.9%, 48.8%, and 52.8% respectively. The high round-trip efficiency of third system compared to others is attributed to the remarkable reduction in steam requirement and hydrogen compression power owning to fuel recirculation. The result from economic calculation showed that the LCOS values of system 1, 2, 3 were 3.46 ¢/kWh, 3.43 ¢/kWh, and 3.14 ¢/kWh, respectively. Even though the systems 2 and 3 have expensive HRSG, they showed higher round-trip efficiencies and significant reduction in boiler and hydrogen compressor cost.

The distribution of the combined heat and power system is active as a solution to the instability of energy supply and environmental pollution caused by continuous industrial development. In Korea, the safety standards for combined heat and power system using a gas engine are insufficient therefore the study on this is needed. In this study, the safety performance and structural/material assessment items of domestic and international standards applied to the combined heat and power system were analyzed to carry out a standardization study on safety performance applicable to 20 kW gas engine combined heat and power system. In addition, the safety performance assessment (plan) of the gas engine combined heat and power system was derived by performing risk analysis and risk assessment using HAZOP. Assessment items include engine ignition systems related to safety performance, piping tight performance, watering and temperature rise performance, combustion performance, electrical efficiency, thermal efficiency, overall efficiency and humidity performance. Gas and water pipes, gas control and shut-off valves, durability, heat resistance, and cold resistance of metal or non-metallic materials related to the structure and materials of the gas engine combined heat and power systems.
Due to the industrial development and population growth, it has recently been shown that there are many problems caused by the rinked treatment water in local goverments and sewage treatment plants. The rinked treatment water has a characteristic of low flow rate and high concentration unlike general sewage. These characteristics increase sewage treatment difficulty and sewage treatment fee of sewage treatment facilities. Among the many influencing factors that increase sewage treatment unit cost, 'linked treatment load/design inflow load (%)' was derived as the most correlated factor. Through the selection and modeling of sewage treatment plants, the excess scope of design discharge water quality was investigated under the conditions of temperature and the conditions of 'linked treatment load/design inflow load (%)' taking into account the effects of the four seasons. The study found that for TN, 'linked treatment load/design inflow load (%)' was 19.7%, 22.6%, 25.1%and 27.7%, respectively, under conditions of $5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$. In case of TP, 'rinked treatment load/design inflow load (%)' was 10.7%, 12.2%, 15.6% and 17.5% at $5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$, respectively, under conditions of $5^{\circ}C$, $10^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$.
