The Effect of Buoyancy Orientation on Flow Structures in Turbulent Channel Flow using DNS

  • The effect of buoyancy orientation on turbulent channel flow has been investigated using DNS (direct numerical simulation). Grashof number is kept at 9.6 $\times 10^{5}$ while changing the orientation of the buoyancy vector to be parallel or perpendicular to the channel walls. Four study cases can be distinguished during this research namely; streamwise, wall-normal unstable stratification, wall-normal stable stratification and spanwise oriented buoyancy. The driving mean pressure gradient used in all cases is adjusted to keep mass flow rate constant while friction Reynolds number is around 150. At this Grashof number, the skin friction shows decrement in the unstable and stable stratification and increment in the other two cases. Analyses of the changes of flow structure for the four cases are presented highlighting on the mean quantities and second order statistics.

A Compensation Control Method Using Neural Network for Mechanical Deflection Error in SCARA Robot with Random Payload

  • This study proposes the compensation method for the mechanical deflection error of a SCARA robot. While most studies on the related subject have dealt with the development of a control algorithm for improvement of robot accuracy, this study presents the control method reflecting the mechanical deflection error which is predicted in advance. The deflection at the end of the gripper of SCARA robot is caused by the self-weights and payloads of Arm 1, Arm 2 and quill. If the deflection is constant even though robot's posture and payload vary, there may not be a big problem on robot accuracy because repetitive accuracy, that is relative accuracy, is more important than absolute accuracy in robot. The deflection in the end of the gripper varies as robot's posture and payload change. That's why the moments $M_x$, $M_y$ and $M_z$ working on every joint of a robot vary with robot's posture and payload size. This study suggests the compensation method which predicts the deflection in advance with the variations in robot's posture and payload using neural network. To do this, I chose the posture of robot and the payloads at random, found the deflections by the FEM analysis, and then on the basis of this data, made compensation possible by predicting deflections in advance successively with the variations in robot's posture and payload through neural network learning.

  • This study analyzed the wake characteristics of the rim-driven propeller (RDP) used in an underwater robot. For underwater robots to perform specific missions, not only propulsion characteristics but also wake characteristics must be considered. In this study, a blade was designed based on NAC 0012 with a symmetrical cross-section. The RDP was hubless with three or four blades. The influence of both the free water surface and the bottom was considered, and the wake was measured using a particle image velocimetry in the advance ratio of 0.2 to 1. Model 1 showed symmetrical wakes in the entire advance ratio section. Model 2 showed asymmetric wakes due to the influence of the free water surface and the bottom at low advance ratio.

Numerical investigation of tip clearance effects on the performance of ducted propeller

  • Tip clearance loss is a limitation of the improvement of turbomachine performance. Previous studies show the Tip clearance loss is generated by the leakage flow through the tip clearance, and is roughly linearly proportional to the gap size. This study investigates the tip clearance effects on the performance of ducted propeller. The investigation was carried out by solving the Navier-Stokes equations with the commercial Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) code CFX14.5. These simulations were carried out to determine the underlying mechanisms of the tip clearance effects. The calculations were performed at three different chosen advance ratios. Simulation results showed that the tip loss slope was not linearly at high advance due to the reversed pressure at the leading edge. Three type of vortical structures were observed in the tip clearance at different clearance size.

  • The speedy advance of network technology with axis internet gives the business opportunities to the today's firms and also makes them apply the intranet and groupware to their management. And, the firms admit these technological changes and expand the investment on the network. But, the firm's plans to cope with the changes which is caused by the appliance of the network technology to their firms are not prepared yet. Especially, the firm's managers are particularly wondering on how to use the already invested network hardware. In this article, we investigated the advance process and direction of the network technology like internet, groupware, and intranet, the firm's efforts to build network system, and the changes of the business process procedures. To apply the new technologies such as intranet and groupware into the business, the firms have to change the function of computer center from the programming to the user training and the management of network and computing resources, and they need to standardize their business process.

An Inherently dB-linear All-CMOS Variable Gain Amplifier

  • This paper introduces a simple variable gain amplifier (VGA) structure that shows an inherently dB-linear gain control property. Requiring no additional components for dB-linear control, the structure is compact and power efficient. The designed two-stage VGA shows a gain control range of 60dB with the gain error in the range of ${\pm}0.4$ dB. The power consumption including the output buffer is 20.4 mW from 1.2 V supply voltage with bandwidth of 630 MHz. The prototype was fabricated in a 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process and the VGA core occupies 0.06 $mm^2$.

A Novel Subspace Tracking Algorithm and Its Application to Blind Multiuser Detection in Cellular CDMA Systems

  • In this paper, we propose and develop a new algorithm for the principle subspace tracking by orthonormalizing the eigenvectors using an approximation of Gram-Schmidt procedure. We carry out a novel mathematical derivation to show that when this approximated version of Gram-Schmidt procedure is added to a modified form of projection approximation subspace tracking deflation (PASTd) algorithm, the eigenvectors can be orthonormalized within a linear computational complexity. While the PASTd algorithm tries to extracts orthonormalized eigenvectors, the new scheme orthonormalizes the eigenvectors after their extraction, yielding much more tacking efficiency. We apply the new tracking scheme for blind adaptive multiuser detection for non-stationary cellular CDMA environment and use extensive simulation results to demonstrate the performance improvement of the proposed scheme.
