  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the science concepts and teaching and learning methods presented in the science education-related activities of the Nuri Curriculum teacher guidebooks for ages 3-5. Methods: The research data included 772 activities related to science education in the teachers' guidebook. The analysis of science concepts was based on physical science (force and motion, physical structure, electricity and magnetism, light and shadow, sound properties), chemistry (material properties, material reaction), life science (organizational structure, growth and change, heredity and evolution, animal plant and human relationships), earth science (earth system interaction, earth system structure, and universe), engineering (designed world, engineering design, engineering, technology and society) and ecology (environment preservation). Teaching and learning methods were analyzed according to the types of small and large group activities and of free play activities. Results: Science concepts were mainly presented in the fields of engineering, chemistry, and life science commonly among children aged 3-5, whereas the concepts of physical science were lowly presented in all ages. Science concepts appeared mainly in the daily subjects of 'animal plant and nature', 'life tools', 'environment and life', and 'spring, summer, autumn and winter'. As the teaching and learning method, free paly activities (science area, free outdoor selection activity, math and manipulative activity) were mostly used for the ages of 3 and 4, and small and large group activities (cooking, story sharing, music activity) were for the age of 5. Conclusion/Implications: It is necessary to select the level of science area and concept that can be taught according to the age of children and the timing of the teaching.

  • Objectives To initiate and develop a treatment guideline in multidisciplinary approaches for related professions who are either working and/or living with children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders who show behavioral problems. Methods To collect and reflect opinions from multiple professions who assumedly have different interventions or mediations on behavioral problems, a self-report survey and Focus Group Interview (FGI) were conducted for a group of child and adolescent psychiatrists, behavioral therapists, special education teachers, social welfare workers, and caregivers. Results According to a self-report survey and FGI results from multiple professional groups, aggressive behavior is the mostly common behavioral problem necessitating urgent interventions. However, both mainly used intervention strategies and effective treatment methods were different depending on professional backgrounds, such as pharmacological treatment, parent training, and behavior therapy, even though they shared an importance of improving communication skills. In addition, there was a common understanding of necessity to include parent training in a guideline. Lastly the data suggested lack of proper treatment facilities, qualified behavior therapists, and lack of standardized treatment guideline in the field needed to be improved for a quality of current therapeutic services. Conclusion It is supported that several subjects should be included in the guidelines, such as how to deal with aggressive behavior, parent training, and biological aspects of neurodevelopmental disorders. Also, it is expected that publishing the guideline would be helpful to above multiple professions as it is investigated that there are lack of treatment facility and qualified behavioral therapists compared to need at the moment.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the scaffolding processes of children in mathematical problem solving. 3 groups of 4th grade students participated in the study and the researchers proceeded the study for 4 months. The procedures of this research were as followings. First, when the learners solved the problems, the categories of scaffolding processes(by way of unit line coding belong in open codings, the categories were made 25 concepts and integrated 20 subcategories) were produced the 7 results: invite to the learning, set the problems, affective aids, attempt self learning, re-ordering between learners and affirmation self learning. Second, the processes of scaffolding in mathematic problem solving resulted in condition, the present condition, action/interaction and the outcomes. Third, the cognitive and affective aids that discovered in the scaffolding processes were considered the main categories of learner's scaffolding processes in solving the mathematic problems. In conclusion, first, the learners' scaffolding processes, based on Vygotsky's "the zone of proximal development" in selection and presentation of mathematic problems, are very diverse. Peers' affective aids are very important in solving the problems. Second, learners in the scaffolding processes exchange the cognitive and affective aids with each other with joy and earnestness, and the aids can give assistance to all the participants. Third, in the results of observation and analysis in learners' scaffolding processes, it is meaningful to know how they think. Finally, the learners' scaffolding processes are a little unsystematic and illogical compared to those of adults, but those of scaffolders are so similar to those of learners' cognitive and affective systems that they can provide teachers with many merits in understanding and teaching learners.

  • This study is intended to look into parents' satisfaction of contracting-out system in employer-supported childcare centers. To achieve this, a survey was carried out to 400 parents who use national, public and private employer-supported childcare centers. The results were as follows. First, employer-supported childcare factors were the qualities of childcare environment, childcare program and early childhood teacher in both contracted-out and in-house services. The satisfaction with facility, program, operation and childcare training was improved in good employer-supported childcare factors And the satisfaction with the relationship between these factors could improve the expectation for the use of employer-supported childcare centers. Second, the difference in the operation of employer-supported childcare centers showed that the most preferred size was 50 to 74 children. The contracted-out services was more preferred than in-house services. And the location of on-the-job facility was more preferred than off-the-job facility. As stated above, the preference of employer-supported childcare centers was more raised than that of general kindergartens or childcare centers by an increase in the trend of working child parents' dual income. In other words, small and medium sized childcare centers of some 50 children were more preferred than large scaled childcare centers. Consequently, the retainment of childcare programs, facilities and quality teachers contracted out to professional childcare centers can improve the satisfaction with them.
