The purposes of this study were to investigate perspective teachers' conceptions of liquid-state and get implications for the direction of science curriculum or professional development. The instrument was composed of seven questions focusing on aspects of liquid-state phenomena. The results showed that the participants have various alternative concepts about liquid-state. The problem revealed in almost every question was their macroscopic explanations for the phenomena. In addition, it appeared that the participants seemed to understand phenomena in terminology level, but they didn't know basic reasons or fundamental concepts about the phenomena. It is required to change the curriculum or instructional methods in secondary school and teacher education programs to anchor the scientific concepts on molecular or microscopic level.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the elementary pre-service teachers' conceptions of 'color of gases' focusing on the survey from freshmen at a National University of Education. For the study, the views about 'color of gases' were surveyed from the pre-service teachers. And the responses were analyzed based on the patterns. The results from the study are as follows: First, the conceptions about 'color of gases' were divided into 2 top-level, 5 mid-level and 7 sub-level categories. Second, the number of students who answered 'certain gas has color' was significantly greater than those who answered 'every gas has no color'. However, only a small number of students who answered former understand the scientific meaning of color and the color of gases correctly. Third, out of 5 misconception categories, greater number of students answered with 'inaccurate scientific knowledge (Ma1)', so the category was classified again into five detailed sub-categories. Fourth, most of the students, who answered 'every gas has no color', stated "they have not seen any color gases through their lives" based on their own experience. Fifth, the distribution percentage for scientific conceptions vs misconceptions was not related with the students' gender but highly related with students' academic area and their science courses taken at high school. Sixth, the pre-service teachers have various types of misconceptions regarding the 'color of gases' and when they have to explain visibility of gases to other people they tend to pass on their misconceptions. Based on the results from the study, some educational guidelines were suggested.
This paper reports findings from a survey of senior secondary school students' epistemological conceptions of mathematics with the adaption of the instrument of the "Conceptions of Mathematics" - Inventory in China. The survey included a sample of 414 Grade 10 students, 441 Grade 11 students, and 400 Grade 12 students from three provinces. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and T-test were employed to analyze data in this study. It was found that senior secondary school students mainly focused on objectivity and reality of mathematics, without highlighting the characteristics of sociality, subjectivity, and creativity of mathematics. In addition, besides gender differences, differences were identified among students from different grades, different areas, taught by teachers with different teaching experience and experience in using reformed curriculum.
This study was aimed to understand the structures of preservice secondary school teachers' alternative conceptions on radioactive isotopes in the interior of earth. The structure of their conceptions were analyzed by the suggestions of Niaz (1988) based on the Lakatosian frameworks. The survey was carried out on a group of seventeen students who were major in science education. The research method was open-ended written questionnaire. The results of this study show that students had apparent alternative conceptions. The high temperature and pressure' explanation for radioactive decay in earth's interior had most import effects on their alternative conceptions. It was also intended to survey their conceptional change by our teaching strategies of the philosophy of science in order to construct science concepts.

Genetic determinism of human behaviors is considered as a philosophical perspective that genes in humans determine biological as well as social traits. However, many biologists agree that human traits are determined by interactions between genes and genes, as well as between genes and environments. In this context, genetic determinism still affect ideas of the general public as well as research directions of biologists. According to Cl$\acute{e}$ment's KVP model (Cast$\acute{e}$ra & Cl$\acute{e}$ment, 2012), teachers' conceptions of genetic determinism influence students' concepts of genetics. This study intends to investigate teachers' conceptions on genetic determinism of human behaviors. For this end, a questionnaire adopted from a previous research (Cast$\acute{e}$ra & Cl$\acute{e}$ment, 2012) has been administered to 308 teachers including 151 pre-service and 157 in-service. Factor analysis has been conducted to extract major factors and one-way ANOVA has been employed to find out differences in extracted factors among different groups of teachers. Four factors have been extracted from 14 items of questionnaire, including factor 1, a perspective of genetic determinism of gender differences in intellectual ability, social status, and emotional traits; factor 2, a perspective of genetic determinism of individual differences in intellectual ability; factor 3, a perspective of genetic determinism of individual differences in biological immune function and behavioral trait; and factor 4, a perspective of genetic determinism of ethnic differences. From the results of One-way ANOVA among teacher groups on four factors, first, it has shown a significant difference in factor 1 (F=3.325, p=.006), factor 3 (F=3.320, p=.006) and factor 4 (F=4.325, p=.001) due to their subject matters. In post-hoc comparison there have been no significant difference between biology teachers and other teachers. It has also been found that there was a significant difference between pre-service and in-service teachers in factor 1 (t=-3.938, p=.000) and factor 4 (t=-3.121, p=.002) and in-service teachers are more genetic deterministic than pre-service teachers. Finally, different religions have no influence on teachers' conceptions of genetic determinism of human behaviors.
This study is intended to examine 36 in-service secondary school mathematics teachers' conceptions of proof in the context of mathematics and mathematics education. The results suggest that almost teachers recognize the role as justification well but have the insufficient conceptions about another various roles of proof in mathematics. The results further suggest that many of teachers have vague concept-images in relation with the requirement of proof and recognize the insufficiency about the actual teaching of proof. Based on the results, implications for revision of mathematics curriculum and mathematics teacher education are discussed.
In this study, science teachers' and students' perceptions were searched on lectures and experiment of law of definite proportion in middle school science classes. For this study, the three teachers' lessons were observed and recorded, following interviews related to teachers' perceptions on the lessons and experiments. Also, We analyzed students' science scores, cognitive levels, science attitude, experimental reports, etc. According to the results, the three teachers had different focuses in the lectures. Chemistry teachers accentuated calculation of proportions and application rather than basic conceptions. But the students could not understand basic conceptions properly. The teachers spend long time to explain experimental procedures by assuming a low performance level of students in experimental classes. And the teachers had negative perceptions about error of results. The students could not understand the experiment results well, tried to manipulate data artificially, and had negative perceptions about error of results like the teachers. We suggested that these problems might be solved by changing teachers' perceptions on school science lectures and experiments.
We investigated whether and how pre-service teachers took the realistic contexts seriously in the course of solving word problems; additionally, we investigated how pre-service teachers evaluated students' realistic and non-realistic answers to word problems. Many pre-service teachers, similar to students, solved some of the realistic problems unrealistically without taking the realistic contexts seriously. Besides, they evaluated students' non-realistic answers higher than the realistic answers. Whether the pre-service teachers could solve problems realistically or not, they did not appreciate students' realistic considerations for the reasons that those were not fitted to the intentions of the word problems, or those were evidence of the flaws of the problem. Furthermore, the analysis of premises implied in the pre-service teachers' evaluation comments showed the implicit didactic contracts about realistic word problem solving that they accepted and also anticipated students to follow. Our analysis of the pre-service teachers' conceptions of realistic word problems can help teacher educators design the teacher program to challenge and revise pre-service teachers' folk pedagogy.
It is necessary for the teacher to understand why teach mathematics in order to implement the visions and expectations of the national mathematics curriculum in her actual classroom. This study conducted a survey of examining how elementary school teachers might understand the purpose of teaching mathematics. The results of this study showed that teachers' conceptions of the purpose of teaching mathematics were related mainly to the development of logical thinking, practical use of mathematics in everyday life, and a tool for studying other subjects or disciplines. However, teachers did not perceive much other purposes of mathematics education such as understanding the world, appreciating aesthetic value of mathematics, and developing communicative ability as well as sociality. Whereas teachers did not think of the significance of mathematics as an intellectual field when asked to write down how they would explain students why they had to learn mathematics, they tended to strongly agree it in the Likert-scale responses. Teachers' conceptions were not different according to their gender but teachers with less than five years' teaching experience were relatively negative than others with more experience. Given these results, this study provided issues and implications of teachers' conceptions of the purpose of teaching mathematics.
