  • The present study investigated attitudes of preschool teachers toward children's bullying behaviors and relationships between teachers' self-efficacy and attitudes toward children's bullying behaviors. The participants were 176 preschool and daycare center teachers. The results indicated that teachers perceived physical bullying more seriously than verbal or relational bullying. Teachers reported that they would intervene more intensively for children who have been targeted than for bullying children in physical and relational bullying situations. Teachers with high self-efficacy were more likely to perceive physical and relational bullying seriously than were teachers with low self-efficacy.

  • The purpose of the present study was to explore the stability and changes of participant roles in the bullying process, namely, bullies, victims, followers, outsiders, and defenders. In addition, this study examined associated environmental characteristics of both followers and defenders in sixth graders among peer bystanders in the fifth grade. The participants consisted of 461 children from grades 5 to 6(male: 239, female: 222). Data were collected at one year intervals for two data points. The results indicated a moderate consistency in the participant roles the children take across time. Followers and outsiders tended to change differently in their roles one year later. On the other hand, defenders, bullies, and victims tended to keep the same role. The defenders group generally had higher levels of peer attachment, teacher attachment and community's supervision than the followers group. The implications for future research and intervention in bullying were also discussed.

  • This study was designed to find out the determinants of types of bullying behavior, and the effects of types of bullying behavior on the bullies. For this purpose, a hypothetical model which explains the relationships among 6 environmental factors, 5 types of bullying behavior, and 5 outcome variables for the bullies was developed. Using the data collected from 177 junior and high school students who have bullied the other students, the hypothetical model was tested. For data analysis, a path analysis was used, and the best-fitting model was found (df=78, GFI=0.953, CFI=1.00). As a result of analyzing the model, types of bullying behavior were found to be determined by the different environmental factors: Isolation was determined by 2 factors (feeling of isolation from friends, exposure to bullying), social bullying by 2 factors (lack of support from parents, exposure to bullying), verbal bullying by conflicts with parents, physical bullying by 3 factors (lack of support from parents, exposure to isolation and exposure to bullying), and instrumental bullying by lack of support from parents. On the other hand, the pleasure that the bullies feel after bullying behavior was increased by isolation, verbal bullying and physical bullying, while decreased by instrumental bullying. Guilt feeling was decreased by isolation and instrumental bullying, while increased by physical bullying. Isolation increased the tendency of blaming the victim. Isolation and instrumental bullying increased bullies' self-esteem, while social bullying decreased self-esteem. Verbal bullying increased the extent of bullying, while instrumental bullying decreased the extent of bullying. Based on the findings, the intervention strategies to change the bullies' attitudes toward victim, and to increase social support from the significant others as well as the effective ways to reorganize the school environment in order to reduce and prevent bullying behavior were suggested.

The data were analyzed with Pearson's correlation to test the relationship among the above 4 variables. Self Image, depression, and anxiety were correlated strongly each other. But moral development was not correlated with self image, depression, and anxiety. Five school bullied students were referred by their teacher for school maladjustment. • The purpose of this study is to recognize kindergarten teachers' experiences of child violence for identifying the site's needs for the implementation of preventive education in early childhood and to provide basic data on child violence. To this end, nine teachers were interviewed in-depth. From the study results, first, child violence-related child behavior, which usually occurs in kindergartens, includes physical assault, aggression, verbal violence, threats and threats, and bullying. Second, teachers usually use direct intervention laws in cases of child violence, but were finding it difficult to intervene properly with many tasks or high teacher-to-child ratios. Teachers recognized the need for lower teacher-to-child ratios and placement of each class burden. Third, teachers were aware of the need for prevention education for child violence targeting infants, and instigated the following appropriate interactions immediately after problem behavior occurred: large group activities, specific multimedia education data and parent education. Fourth, teachers are concerned about the possibility of problem behavior being learned and imitated through education in the implementation of prevention education for children's violence. Therefore, this study proposed the need to develop various teaching methods that could be applied to infant education sites, focusing on the types of child violence-related problem behaviors that occur in kindergartens.

  • The school drop-out among the youth has grown to become a serious social problem since about 2000 and calls for an attention to its seriousness. Therefore, this study reviewed the statitistical reports and the previous empirical findings on the school drop-out and integrated to establish a comprehensive understanding of this social phenomenon. The main concepts and terminologies on school drop-out, the current statistics, the possible causal factors and the usual trajectory the youth take after dropping-out of school were discussed to conceptualize the issue. Analyses indicated 12 characteristics of the students who dropped out of school. Those 12 characteristics were restructured according to the ecological conceptual model. The social instability and the financial crisis in the 1990's has eroded the stability of the primary environments of adolescents such as family and school. The family breakdowns from divorce and other reasons weakened psychological and financial support for adolescents. The diminished authority of teachers and school over students exposed conflicts between teacher and students, students' loss of purpose and interest in academic attainment. The adolescents showed emotional reponses like increased level of depression, helplessness, aggression, indicated cognitive reponses such as the loss of purpose and interest in studying, a heightened sense of uncertainty of the future, and behavioral responses like sexual acting out behaviors, and bullying. The unmet psychological needs of adolescents result in run-away and school drop-out behaviors, which in turn progress into juvenile delinquency as the society fails to provide adequate and appropriate guidance and interventions. The intervention strategies at the national level were proposed and the limitations of the study were discussed.
