An Analysis of the Characteristics of the Processes of Pre-Service Chemistry Teachers in Making Written Test Items Using Think-Aloud Method (발성 사고법을 이용한 예비 화학 교사의 지필평가 문항 제작 과정의 특징 분석)

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the individual processes of pre-service chemistry teachers in making written test items. For this, we analyzed the think-aloud processes of eight pre-service chemistry teachers while making six written test items about gas laws and their in-depth interview scripts. The characteristics of the processes were found to be divided into six categories; the lack of systemicity in planning stage for making written test items, the lack of awareness and consideration for the interrelationship between instruction and assessment, the diverse criteria in determining test item types, the difficulties in judging behavioral domains and difficulties of items in the table of specification, the limitation in using teacher's guides and misunderstanding of teacher's guides, and the limitation in point and/or content of review and differences depending on the time of review. These can provide some significant guidelines and implications in finding ways to improve pre-service chemistry teachers' ability to make written test items.

Educational Meaning of Human Creation Process in Mythology (신화에서 인간출현과정의 교육적 의미 - 단군신화와 창세기 내용을 중심으로 -)

  • The myth reflects the human way of thinking about the world. Therefore, an important part of myth is human creation and role. This study examines the process of human creation in myth and discusses implications for education. The subjects that can be considered from the viewpoint of education are as follows. The status and role of teachers and students, the relationship between teachers and students, how to create or create humans, and the purpose and results of human creation. First, it is the position and role of the teacher. In myth, being like a teacher is a divine being that transcends human ability. In Dangun mythology, Hwanwoong or Shinwoong descended from heaven, and in the Genesis it is the Creator God. In Dangun mythology, the role of the teacher guides the way of becoming a human and provides necessary tasks. In Genesis, the image of the teacher is the Creator God. God plays the role of a teacher who prepares various environments in which learners can work. Second, the status and role of students in myths. In Dangun mythology, students are symbolized by bear and tiger. They go to the teacher with the desire to become human beings. In Dangun mythology, the student is not a passive existence but an autonomous and active image. In Genesis, the appearance of a student is a passive being created by a teacher. Third, the creation of human beings in myth can be seen in terms of educational process and method. In Dangun Myth, the beginning of education is the wish or expectation of learners. Learners eat mugwort and garlic and participate in human learning. In Genesis 1, however, there is no need for a special method, since human beings are created according to the Creator's command. Fourth, the purpose of education can be discussed through the purpose of human creation. In Dangun mythology, the purpose of education is not to live according to instinct but to become human with culture and personality. In Genesis 1, the purpose of human creation is the role of the Creator in creating and managing the world. Therefore, it is the aim of humans to manage the world in an orderly manner. The purpose of education in Genesis 2 is to enable humans to serve the world.

The Meaning of Teachers as they Manifest themselves in the Emotional Regulation of 2 Year Old Infants (2세 영아의 정서조절 측면에서 나타나는 교사의 의미)

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate meaning of teachers as they manifest themselves in the emotional regulation of 2year old infants in a daycare center. In addition, the research attempts to provide basic research data that can be used as a guideline for teacher's awareness, roles, attitudes, and classroom management for infant's emotional education in the future. To achieve this goal, participatory observation was conducted in a child care center class for infants under 2 years old from January 17 to January 29, 2012. The teacher is defined as follow : Teachers are authority figures whose image is that of absolute authority, and coupled with their dual role of passive caretakers. Additionally, they function as guides who guided infants through the process of emotional socialization, and played the central role of emotional contagion from whose expression speech and atmosphere the said infants receive much influence. Such results seemed to indicate that teachers today do not fully comprehend the importance of their roles in influencing the emotion regulation of infants.

Practical Knowledge of Geography Teacher in Process of Performance Assessment (수행평가 과정을 통해서 본 지리교사의 실천적 지식)

  • The purpose of this study is to look into practical knowledge of geography teacher that lead the teacher's conduct in performance assessment situation. In Classroom all activity of teachers is their unique creature and the behavior which express teacher's knowledge and competency as expert. Practical knowledge can be seen as a system of understanding that guides the teacher s decision, which involves the construction of contents to teach, methods of instruction, resources to use etc. Therefore if we fully read the teacher's instruction, we have to understand the practical knowledge of teacher. As an ordinary activity of teaming and teaching, performance assessment is conducted on active learning and teaching situation and has intention to advance learning. Thus All evaluating behavior conducted by teacher can be understood through the practical knowledge of teacher. For this purpose a series of performance assessment scenes conducted by teacher were selected observed and captured the imagery, principles and rules of practical knowledge through the qualitative research method. The result supposed that practical knowledge influence the whole process of geography teacher's performance assessment activity.

A Study on Nursery School Teacher's Knowledge and Education of Nutrition Care in Gwang-Ju (광주지역 어린이집 보육교사의 영양지식과 영양교육 실태)

  • This study was done to come up with a solution to effectively increase nutrition knowledge and education among nursery school teachers in the Gwang-ju metropolitan city area. The scores of teacher's nutrition knowledge were around the average of 9.4 points on a 15-point scale, which is about 63.1 points on a 100-point scale. When the types of subjects were compared, we recognized that the nursery school teachers with a college degree or those who have any training/education in nutrition had the highest scores in nutrition knowledge. Also, the nursery schools who have more than 101 children or public nursery schools had the highest scores in nutrition knowledge (p < 0.05). We can conclude that the knowledge of nutrition of nursery teachers is very lacking and it is not as high as it should be. In addition, we can also see that the dietary guidance and nutrition education time spent towards the children was very short. The lack of professional knowledge and education seems to be due to shortage of educational materials and because the teachers themselves lack the knowledge to pass on to their predecessors. In fact, even the teachers themselves feel the need to set up more nutrition-related education programs, obtain more guides and materials to teach them, as well as implement more organized and systemized teaching methods.

  • This study is to design and implement Excel 2000 WBI applying the Cognitive Apprentice Model. Excel 2000 is the most used Spread Sheet program and indispensable for increasing teachers' information literacy. The Cognitive Apprentice Model is one of Constructivism learning models. Constructivism is a new educational paradigm and mainly applied in education fields. This WBI is designed and implemented according to the Cognitive Apprentice Model and composed of practical contents according to Constructivism learning principle which insists learning is occurred in real situation. For more effective interaction the teacher(computer) guides the learners individually and uses a bulletin board, E-mail and chatting room.

A Decomposition of the Work of Leading Mathematical Discussions with Single Case Questions (단답형 문제를 이용한 수학 토론에 수반된 교수 업무 분석)

  • Mathematical discussion has been highlighted so that what students do actually guides their learning of mathematics and mathematical practice. However, the work of leading mathematical discussions has not yet been specified in such a way that it can be adequately studied and taught to teachers. This study analyzes a teacher's lessons that show full engagement in leading discussions, and examines the work of leading mathematical discussions in elementary classrooms. It identifies and illustrates the central tasks of leading mathematical discussions with single case questions with five steps. This article argues several key issues in leading mathematical discussions: helping students engage in struggling with important mathematical ideas, treating mathematical connections in an explicit and public way to have coherent and structured discussions, and parsing the work of teaching at a grain size that is usable in educating teachers.

  • For preservice teachers' instrumental-to-relational pedagogical content knowledge transformations, this research designed several didactical tasks based on Kinach's cognitive strategies. The researcher identified preservice teachers' understanding about what is a definition and how to teach it. By challenging their fixed ideas about definitions, the researcher could motivate them to embrace the new teaching approach which guides reinvention of definitions. The PCK development was not the simple process of filling their tabular rasa PCK with theories of mathematics education, but the dialectical process of identifying, challenging, changing and extending preservice teachers' existent PCK. This research will contribute to explore new directions of mathematics teachers' PCK development and the method of teacher education.

Learning from an Expert Teacher: Feynman's Teaching of Gravitation as an Examplar

  • An expert teachers' instruction can be helpful to other teachers because good teaching effectively guides students to develop meaningful learning. Feynman is an excellent physics lecturer as well as one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century who presented and explained physics with his unique teaching style based on his great store of knowledge. However, it is not easy to capture and visualize teaching because it is not only the complex phenomena interrelated to various factors with the content to be taught but also the tacit representation. In this study, the framework of knowledge & belief based on the integrated mental model theory was used as a tool to capture and visualize complex and tacit representation of Feynman's teaching of 'The theory of gravitation,' a chapter in The Feynman Lectures on Physics. Feynman's teaching was found to go beyond the transmission of physics concepts by showing that components of the framework of knowledge & belief were effectively intertwined and integrated in his teaching and the storyline was well-organized. On the basis of these discussions, the implications of Feynman's teaching analyzed within the framework of knowledge & belief for physics teacher education are derived. Finally, the characteristics of the framework of knowledge & belief as tools for the analysis of teaching are presented.

  • It is well known that the low achievement students are easily affected by the ways how the materials are organized and presented. So the studies on trying to find how those students' responses are differed according to the organization or presentation of the materials are necessary. This paper was based on the results of Korean Elementary 3 Grade Students National Diagnosis Assessment on Basic Scholastic Ability in area of mathematics. We analyzed students responses through combining the percents of correct answers with the assessment items. After that, we identified the properties of low achievement students in mathematics and presented some guides which, we thought, are helpful for improvements of mathematics textbooks and teacher guide books.
