This study was carried out to find a new corn cultivar with multiple tillers that is suitable for forage. Materials were developed at the Corn Breeding Laboratory of Chungnam National University. A total of 3,650 accessions were collected domestically and from other countries, including China. Among them, 16 CNU inbreds, tillering and non-tillering, were compared to each other in terms of stem heigh, number of tillers, fresh weight, and dry weight per plant. Of these surveyed traits, the stem heigh at tasseling stage was 140~190 cm and number of tillers per plant ranged from two to four. Fresh weight and dry weight of these lines were higher in the tillered than in the non-tillered sample.
In order to know growing habit of the maize bearing tillers, IK//IRI/B68 with tillers was grown and compared with Jinjoo Ok which is not tillering, and several parameters were measured for analysis. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The plant height and fresh weight of IK//IRI/B68 were lower than those of Jinjoo Ok until the tasseling stage of IK/ /IRI/B68, while then plant height and fresh weight of IK//IRI/B68 were higher than those of Jinjoo Ok after the tasseling stage of IK//IRI/B68. 2. The average number of tillers per plant of IK//IRI/B68 at maturity was 3.7 and the average tiller height of IK//IRI/B68 was almost the same as the height of the main stem. 3. The dry weight of IK//IRI/B68 at the early growing stage was lower than the check hybrid Jinjoo Ok, while it was higher than Jinjoo Ok at the later growing stage. 4. The LAI of IK//IRI/B68 after full expansion of the leaves was greater than that of Jinjoo Ok The LAIs of IK//IRI/B68 and Jinjoo Ok were 12.6 and 5.8, respectively. 5. The CGR of Jinjoo Ok was greater than that of IK//IRI/B68 until earey July while the CGR of Jinjoo Ok was lower than that of IK//IRI/B68 as the tillers of IK//IRI/B68 were fully developed. 6. The LAR and RGR of IK//IRI/B68 were greater than those of Jinjoo Ok until mid-July. The RGR of IK//IRI/B68 seemed to be affected by both NAR and LAR. The RGR of Jinjoo Ok seemed to be affected by LAR.

This experiment was carried out to investigate effects of herbicide application method on Calysteria jcqoonica control and corn yield at the forage experimental field, grassland and forage crops division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from 1996 to 1997. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three replication. The herbicide application consisted of control, 2~3 leaf stage(Dicamba), 5~6 leaf stage(Dicamba) and soil treatment (Pendimethalin). The hybrid of corn used in this experiment was P 3352. The results obtained are summarized as follow; 1. The plant height was the lowest at control and the highest at Dicamba treatment in 5~6 leaf stage, but no significant difference was found among herbicide application method at ear height. Tasseling and silking date were delayed 2~3 day at control. The length and weight of ear were highest at Dicamba treatment in 2~3 leaf stage. 2. The herbicide injury of corn was very slightly after 10-20 day, but corn was recovered soon. The weed control value was 94.2~67.5% at herbicide application plot. 3. The fresh and dry matter yield of Dicamba treatment in 2-3 leaf stage was highest as 42,878 and 16,033kg/ha, respectively. The application of Dicamba increased the DM yield of corn by 13~30%. 4. Herbicide application time had little effect on the ADF, NDF and CP contents, but the forage quality of ear was higher than that of stover. The result of this experiment indicate that the application of Dicamba in 2~6 leaf stage of corn will remove almost all of Calysreria jqonica and increase DM yield of com.

Global climate change exerts adverse effects on maize production. Among abiotic stresses, drought stress during the tasseling stage (VT) can increase anthesis-silking intervals (ASI) and decrease yield. We performed an evaluation of ASI and yield using a drought-sensitive line (Ki3) and a drought-tolerant line (Ki11) to analyze the correlation with ASI and yield. Moreover, the de novo data of Ki11 were analyzed to find putative novel transcripts related todrought stress in tropical maize. A total of 182 transcripts, with a log2 ratio >1.5, were found by comparing drought conditions to a control. The top 40 transcripts of high expression levels in the de novo analysis were selected and analyzed with PCR. Of the 40 transcripts, six novel transcripts were detected by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) using seedling and VT stage samples. Five transcripts (transcripts_1, 12, 34, 35, and 40) were up-regulated in the Ki11 shoot at seedling stage, and transcripts_1, 12, and 40 were up-regulated at the re-watering stage after 12 h of drought stress. The transcripts_32 and 34 were up-regulated at the VT stage. Hence, transcript_34 possibly plays a significant role in drought tolerance during the seedling and VT stages. The transcript_32 was identified as chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) by Pfam domain analysis. The function of the other transcripts remained unknown. Further characterization of these novel transcripts in genetic regulation will be of great value for the improvement of maize production.
The frequency and intensity of soil moisture stress associated with climate change has increasing, and the stability of field crop cultivation has decreasing. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of soil moisture management method on growth and yield of corn. Soil moisture was managed at the grade of WSM (wet soil moisture, 34.0~42.9%), OSM (optimum soil moisture, 27.8~34.0%), DSM (dry soil moisture, 20.3~27.8%), and ESM (extreme dry moisture, 16.6~20.3%) during V8 (8th leaf stage)-VT (tasseling stage). After VT, irrigation was limited. The treated amount of irrigation was 54.1, 47.7, 44.0 and 34.5% of total water requirement, respectively. The potential evapotranspiration during the growing period was $3.29mm\;day^{-1}$, and upward movement of soil water was estimated by the AFKAE 0.5 model in the order of ESM, DSM, OSM, and WSM. We could confirm this phenomenon from actual observations. There was no significant difference in leaf characteristics, dry matter, and primary productivity depending on the level of soil moisture, but leaf development was delayed and dry weight decreased in DSM. However, dry weight and individual productivity of DSM increased after irrigation withdrawal compared to that of OSM. In DSM, ear yield and number of kernels per ear decreased, but water use efficiency and harvest index were higher than other treatments. Therefore, it is considered that the soil moisture is concentratedly managed before the V8 period, the V8-VT period is controlled within the range of 100 to 500 kPa (20.3~27.8%), and no additional irrigation is required after the VT.
The effects of seedtime and maturity stage on nutritive value of five maize stover varieties, including conventional maize (Kexiangyu 11, CM), fodder maize (Huqing 1, FM), high oil maize (Gaoyou 115, HOM), sweet maize (Kexiangtianyu 1, SM) and waxy maize (Kexiangluoyu 1, WM), were examined based on chemical composition, in vitro gas production and in situ incubation techniques. Maize stover was sampled at d 17 and d 30 after tasseling, and designated as maturity stage 1 and stage 2, respectively. The average dry matter (DM) organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and fiber contents were the greatest for HOM, SM and FM, respectively. CM had the highest in vitro organic matter disappearance (IVOMD) and volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration. The highest ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3$-N) concentration in the incubation solution, and effective degradability of DM ($ED_{DM}$) and neutral detergent fiber ($ED_{NDF}$) were observed in SM. Advanced maturity stage increased (p<0.05) DM content, $ED_{DM}$ and $ED_{NDF}$, but decreased (p<0.05) OM and CP contents, and decreased (p<0.05) b and a+b values, IVOMD and molar proportion of valerate in the incubation solution for maize stover. Maize sown in summer had greater (p<0.05) OM content, but lower DM, CP, neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) content compared with maize sown in spring. Maize sown in summer had greater (p<0.001) IVOMD, $NH_3$-N concentration in the incubation solution and $ED_{NDF}$, but lower (p<0.01) ratio of acetate to propionate compared to maize sown in spring. The interaction effect of variety${\times}$seedtime was observed running through almost all chemical composition, in vitro gas production parameters and in situ DM and NDF degradability. The overall results suggested that SM had the highest nutrient quality, and also indicated the possibility of selecting maize variety and seedtime for the utilization of maize stover in ruminants.

We studied the influence of Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) manure compost soil application on the growth and yield of maize (Zea mays L.). We compared the soil application of chemical fertilizer (CF), commercial manure (CM), Hanwoo manure (HM), and the mixed Hanwoo manure and chemical fertilizer (HM + CF). CF application showed faster tasseling and silking dates compared to the other treatments. During the early plant growth stage of maize, CF application resulted in taller plant height, However, during later growth stages (55 days after transplanting). HM (226.0 cm) and HM + CF (230.0 cm) treatment resulted in taller plant height compared to CF (216.2 cm). Post-harvest measurement results showed that, the ear length was longer in HM (22.13 cm) and HM + CF (22.70 cm) compared to others, while ear diameter, ear weight, and 100-grains weight showed no significant difference among CF, HM, and HM + CF groups. The use of HM resulted in delayed growth during the early stages of plant development compared to CF. However, crop productivity markers of ear weight and ear diameter showed no significant difference compared to CF. Thus, HM treatment was comparable to CF treatment in maize cultivation.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the optimum application level of dicamba herbicide for efficient control of Abutilon avicennae in silage corn field. Five treatments of application levels (0 ; control, $0.75{\ell},\;1.0{\ell},\;1.25{\ell}\;and\;1.5{\ell}$) were arranged at National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon in 1995 and 1996. The hybrid silage corn was P 3352 and dicamba herbicide was applied at 5~6 leaf stage of corn. The growth of corn was poor in control plot, and the days for tasseling and silking were delayed 2~3 days when compared with the plots of herbicide application. The control efficiency of Abutilon avicennae was excellent as 94.7~98.1% in the plots of dicamba application. A slight injury of herbicide was observed at early stage of corn when applied at $1.0{\ell},\;1.25{\ell}\;and\;1.5{\ell}$ of dicamba per ha. Forage dry matter(DM) yield, length and weight of ear in the plots of dicamba treatments were significantly higher than those of control. The DM yield of control(12,070kg/ha) was only 64.2~66.9% of dicamba treatment plot(18,050~18,795kg/ha). However, there was no yield difference among dicamba application level. The percentage of ear to total DM yield was ranged from 53.4 to 56.8%. The nutritive value(crude protein, ADF, NDF, digestibility and TDN) was very similar among all treatments. From the above results, it is recommended that optimum application level of dicamba herbicide was $0.75{\sim}1.0{\ell}/ha$ for efficient control of Abutilon avicennae and for silage corn production without herbicide injury.

A field experiment was carried out to determine the optimum application level of dicamba herbicide for efficient control of Calystegia japonica in silage corn field. Six treatments of application levels (0 ; control, $0.75{\ell},\;1.0{\ell},\;1.25{\ell},\;1.5{\ell},\;and\;2.0{\ell}/ha$) were arranged at National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon in 1995. The hybrid silage corn was DK 729, and dicamba herbicide was applied at 5~6 leaf stage of corn. The growth of corn was poor in control plot, and the days for tasseling and silking were delayed 1~4 days when compared with the plots of herbicide application. The control efficiency of Calystegia japonica was excellent as 74.3~94.6% in the plots of dicamba application. A slight injury of herbicide was observed at early stage of corn when applied at $1.25{\ell}$ and $1.5{\ell}$ of dicamba per ha, and severe injury was found at $2.0{\ell}$ of dicamba. Forage dry matter(DM) yield, and length of ear in the plots of dicamba treatments were significantly higher than those of control. The DM yield of control(4,866kg/ha) was only about 30% of dicamba treatment plot (14,960~16,340kg/ha). However, there was no yield difference among dicamba application level. The percentage of ear to total DM yield was ranged from 33.6 to 39.4%. With application of herbicide, the contents of crude protein and nitrogen free extract were increased, and that of crude fiber was decreased in stover. However, nutritive value of corn ear was very similar among all treatments, regardless of herbicide treatment. From the above results, it is recommended that optimum application level of dicamba herbicide was $0.75{\sim}1.0{\ell}/ha$ for efficient control of Calystegia japonica and for silage corn production without herbicide injury.
