  • This study aims to examine curvilinearly moderating effects of task interdependence on the relationship between demographic faultlines and group performance. It posits that the degree of task interdependence has an impact on the effects of demographic faultlines. It was conducted in six organizations in Korea, their industries including heavy industries, hospital, construction, petrochemical, fine chemicals, and system integration. The survey was distributed to 1330 individuals in 162 teams and 1082 individuals in 137 teams responded to the questionnaire. To test the hypotheses including nonlinear interactions, we conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to the survey data from 82 groups within six firms in Korea. The results show that for groups that experience a high level of task interdependence, the slope for the regression of demographic faultlines on group performance is comparatively low and, at the low level of task interdependence, insignificant. However, at intermediate levels of task interdependence, the association was strongly negative and significant. This study finds that the negative relationship between demographic faultlines and group performance is stronger when task interdependence is moderate than when task interdependence is high or low. Therefore, managers should pay attention to optimal group design by carefully assigning tasks in diverse and divided groups.

  • Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of two-way communication and knowledge sharing on the task performance of employees in the interdependent task structure in organizations. Based on the theories of social interdependence and organizational commitment, this study hypothesized the effects of task interdependency and emotional commitment on two-way communication and knowledge sharing, followed by the effects of these variables on the task performance of employees. Design/methodology/approach Survey results show that task interdependence and emotional commitment have positive effects on the degree of two-way communication and knowledge sharing. Two-way communication also has a positive impact on knowledge sharing, and knowledge sharing also improved the task performance of members. However, the relationship between two-way communication and task performance shows no significant impact. Findings Theoretically, this study is meaningful in that the process of task interdependence in relation to emotional commitment leading to task performance is theorized. In practice, this research suggests it is important to improve employees' two-way communication and knowledge sharing in order to lead to increase task performance in the interdependent task environment.

  • With the explosive proliferation of smart devices that may be connected to the fast Internet, virtual desktop interfaces(VDI) are being implemented in enterprises allowing employees to work anywhere anytime in the same technological environment. As this kind of systems are intended to raise the work performance, a research model is constructed from the review of research literature on service quality and work design. The model consists of VDI system service quality (ubiquity, availability, compatibility, security and ease of use), system satisfaction, task performance and job satisfaction. As VDI is designed as a support system for cooperative work, the task interdependence adopted from the work design theory is postulated here as moderating the effect of user satisfaction on task performance and job satisfaction. 147 data points were collected by a survey of VDI users in a global firm and subjected to PLS analysis. Interestingly, ubiquity and compatibility seem to be not statistically significant for user satisfaction while availability, security and ease of use of VDI system are statistically significant. Task interdependence is found to be a relatively strong mediator between system user satisfaction and task performance, however, interestingly, the coefficient come out as negative. This may indicate that the influence of VDI user satisfaction on task performance would not be high in highly interdependent tasks. Considering that VDI is intended for supporting 'interdependence' in cooperative work, this finding is a bit surprising. In-depth discussions are made in the discussion followed by future research directions.

  • Cost overrun or schedule delay of the software development project happens frequently despite that software developers continue to make every effort for the effective management of the projects. Previous researches have ascertained that these problems are ascribed to the uncertainty of projects and the improper management of the projects. The purposes of this research are to investigate the impacts of user participation and task interdependence on the performance of the projects and also to find out the appropriate project management method to improve the project performance. Even though the model fitness of the path model is proved to be very high, the verification of the hypotheses showed a variety of results including the four verifications and the one refutation of the hypotheses as well as the suggestion of one alternative hypothesis. The contribution of this research is that the integration model is proposed and verified, comprising the relationship among the user participation, the task interdependence, and the performance of software development projects. A project manager can utilize the implication of this research for an effective management of software development project.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the organizational citizenship behaviors(OCB) of nurses through identifying the relationship between the personal characteristics, occupational characteristics and OCB in nursing organization. Method: The subjects of this study were 223 clinical nurses. The structured questionnaires were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe' test, Pearson correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis by SPSS version 10. Results: The mean of OCB was $5.21{\pm}.59$. The OCB had statistically significant differences according to age(F=1.706, p=.007), tenure duration (F=3.450, p=.009), choice of nursing department(t=1.651, p=.000), marriage(t=2.341, p=.020) and religion(F=2.578, p=.038). The OCB was positively correlated with high-level need(r=.303, p=.000), neuroticism(r=.155, p=.020), task interdependence(r=.433, p=.000), age(r=.172, p=.010) and tenure duration(r=.190, p=.004); negatively with cynicism (r=-.310, p=.000). The task interdependence(18.7%), cynicism(7.7%) and tenure duration(1.9%) explained 28.3% of the variance for OCB in nursing organization. Conclusion: It is necessary to enhance the task interdependence, increase tenure and understand the characteristics of nurses to increase the OCB in clinical nurses. Nurse manager should be understand the positive influence of OCB on the task outputs in the hospital.

  • Individual adoption and sustained usage of information technology(IT) are crucial prerequisites for exploiting IT as integral components of organizational work. Previous studies on technology adoption in workplace suggest that acceptance behavior is influenced by a variety of factors such as individual differences, social influences, beliefs, attitudes, and situational influences. In this paper, we introduce a research model to predict the usage behavior of intranet in workplace and also explain the causal relationships among variables. Based on the survey of 333 intranet users, this study uses structural equation model with LISREL 8.12. This study suggests several major results from surveys and analysis from them. Perceived use is influenced by intranet experience, task equivocality, organizational support, and perceived ease of use, Experience and organizational support determine perceived ease of use. Task equivocality, task interdependence, and organizational support have positive effects on subjective norm. On the other hand, present usage, which is a dependent variable in this model, is influenced by perceived use, experience, task interdependence, and organizational support.

  • In a dynamic business environment, the enterprise mobility solution for a mobile office (EMS) has been adopted to increase the competitive edge of organizations. By using an EMS, performance is expected to be enhanced. However, the related literature has paid little interest to the impact of system quality in an EMS on the information quality produced by the system. On the basis of socio-technical theory, we posited that the system quality in an EMS influences information quality. In addition, we investigated the relationships between the above two qualities, use and job performance by considering task mobility and task inter-dependence as control variables. Survey respondents were from many industries using EMSs. The result of structural equation modeling shows that system quality positively affects information quality, and other relationships in the model are proven statistically significant. We also found that system quality has stronger impacts on use and job performance than information quality does in EMS. However, system quality does not affect use in case both task mobility and task inter-dependence exist. The theoretical and practical implications of the result are discussed in the paper.

  • There are a variety of entities in natural language such as people, organizations, places, and products. These entities can have many various meanings. The ambiguity of entity is a very challenging task in the field of natural language processing. Entity Linking(EL) is the task of linking the entity in the text to the appropriate entity in the knowledge base. Pairwise based approach, which is a representative method for solving the EL, is a method of solving the EL by using the association between two entities in a sentence. This method considers only the interdependence between entities appearing in the same sentence, and thus has a limitation of global interdependence. In this paper, we developed an Entity2vec model that uses Word2vec based on knowledge base of RDF type in order to solve the EL. And we applied the algorithms using the generated model and ranked each entity. In this paper, to overcome the limitations of a pairwise approach, we devised a pairwise approach based on comprehensive interdependency and compared it.
