  • A new cytotoxic triterpene hydroperoxide (3) was isolated from the methylene chloride extract of the aerial part of Youngia japonica together with four known triterpenes (1, 2, 4 and 5). Their structures were identified by means of physico-chemical and spectral data to be $\beta$-amyrin acetate (1), taraxasterol (2), 2l$\alpha$-hydroperoxy-taraxasterol (3), oleanolic acid (4) and ursolic acid (5). Compounds 3 and 5 showed moderate cytotoxicity against five tumor cell lines.

  • Chromatographic separation of Laduca raddeana extract afforded a mixture of fatty acyl triterpene, triterpene acetates and primary long chain alcohol. The kind of triterpene moieties in these two triterpenoids was six, i.e., ${\beta}-amyrin,\;{\alpha}-amyrin$, lupeol, pseudotaraxasterol, taraxasterol and germanicol on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic methods. The acyl moieties in the corresponding acyl mixture were characterized as acetates, myristate, palmitate, stearate and arachidate. And a mixture of primary long chain alcohol were composed of teracosanol and hexacosanol.

  • The fruits of Cornus kousa Burg. were extracted with 80% aqueous methanol (MeOH) and the concentrated extract was partitioned with ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butanol (n-BuOH), and $H_2O$. From the EtOAc traction, 5 triterpenoids were isolated through repeated silica gel ($SiO_2$), octadecyl silica gel (ODS), and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography (c.c.). These compounds were determined to be ursolic acid (1), corosolic acid (2), taraxasterol (3), betulinic acid (4), and betulinic aldehyde (5) on the basis of their spectroscopic data including electronic ionization mass spectrometry, ultraviolet spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance. This is the first reported isolation of these compounds from this plant. Also, compounds 1, 3, 4, and 5 show a relatively high inhibitory activity against human acyl-CoA: cholesterol acyltransferase-1 (hACAT-1) with inhibition values of $52.8{\pm}0.7$, $91.1{\pm}0.4$, $93.0{\pm}0.7$, and $96.2{\pm}0.2%$ at a concentration of $100{\mu}M$, respectively.

  • The diets with three types of triterpenoid constituents, which were isolated from Lactuca indica, provoked significant changes of serum lipoprotein-cholesterol meta bolisms of hypercholesterolemic rats induced by high-cholesterol diet, together with the reduction of atherogenic index. Especially, triterpene acetates which have triterpene moieties such as ${\beta}-amyrin$, ${\alpha}-amyrin$, lupeol, pseudotaraxasterol, taraxasterol and germanicol showed a considerable hypocholesterolemic activity. The rat given orally with triterpene acetates did not exhibit a significantly higher value of atherogenic index than that of normal rats.

  • A methanol extract of the herbs of Lactuca indica L. effectively decreased the serum levels of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol when orally administered with diet. On fractionation of the extract, a chloroform-soluble fraction showed the similar effects with the methanol extract. Chromatographic separation afforded a mixture of triterpene alcohols and their acyl derivatives. A mixture of triterpene alcohols were identified as ${\beta}-amyrin$, ${\alpha}-amyrin$, lupeol, pseudotaraxasterol, taraxasterol and germanicol on the basis of spectroscopic methods. The acyl moieties in the corresponding acyl mixture were characterized as acetates and palmitates, respectively. And three kinds of sterol such as ${\beta}-sitossterol$, compesterol and stigmasterol were isolated as a mixture state.

  • Six compounds, eupatilin (1), dammaradienyl acetate (2), glutinol acetate (3), $3{\beta}-acetoxyoleanan-12-one$ (4), taraxasterol (5) and quercetin-3,4'-dimethyl ether (6) were isolated from the aerial parts of Artemisia absinthium. The chemical structures of compounds 1-6 were determined by the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic methods such as 1D and 2D NMR. Among them, compounds 2-5 were isolated from this plant for the first time. The inhibitory effects of these isolated compounds against nitric oxide (NO) production in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells or BV2 microglia were also examined. Among the tested compounds, compound 1, eupatilin, inhibited the production of NO in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells and BV2 microglia, respectively.
