This study focuses on the design of the tapered joints of a wind power turbine. The main variables of the tapered joint are the transmitted torque, shaft diameter, contact area of the tapered ring, and tightening torque of the bolts, which applies a compressive pressure from the hub to the shaft. The stress distribution of the taper fit was calculated under axisymmetric plane strain conditions because of the small taper angle. The axial displacement of the clamp can be calculated from the radial elastic deformation and the taper angle. The stress field of each ring is obtained from the cylinder stress equation. To verify the accuracy of the calculation, finite element (FE) analysis was performed, and the results of the calculation and FE analysis were compared. The hoop stress of the tapered surface showed a discrepancy of approximately 10, but the trends of the stress distributions of each component and the relative movement obtained by FE analysis were in good agreement with the analytical calculation results.

This study deals with the static and dynamic stability analyses of simple tapered columns with constant volume. The crosssections of column taper are the regular polygons whose depths are varied with the parabolic functional fashion. The hingedhinged end constraint is chosen as the boundary condition of the column. The non-dimensional ordinary differential equation governing free vibrations of such column subjected to an axial load is derived and solved numerically. From numerical results, the relationships between natural frequencies and section ratios are obtained, from which the configurations of dynamic optimal shapes of columns and the strongest columns are extracted.
The present study deals with the dynamics of the flapwise (out-of-plane) vibrations of a rotating, internally damped (Kelvin-Voigt model) tapered Bernoulli-Euler beam carrying a heavy tip mass. The centroid of the tip mass is offset from the free end of the beam and is located along its extended axis. The equation of motion and the corresponding boundary conditions are derived via the Hamilton's Principle, leading to a differential eigenvalue problem. Afterwards, this eigenvalue problem is solved by using Frobenius Method of solution in power series. The resulting characteristic equation is then solved numerically. The numerical results are tabulated for a variety of nondimensional rotational speed, tip mass, tip mass offset, mass moment of inertia, internal damping parameter, hub radius and taper ratio. These are compared with the results of a conventional finite element modeling as well, and excellent agreement is obtained.
In this study, the dynamic flying characteristics of the worn head sliders are investigated theoretically due to the change in head geometry caused by head and disk contact. The film shapes can be approximated as taper- truncated cycloidal-flat film. Two-dimensional time dependent modified Reynolds equation included molecular slip effect are formulated with neglected the roughness effect. The motion of head slider was assumed to have two degree of freedom in this work. Finite difference approximation with Newton Raphson iterative technique and the fourth order Runge-Kutta method were implemented to obtain the transient response of the slider head with various change in head geometry numerically and compared with the transient response of the IBM3380 type head slider. The simulation results show the film shape has affects significantly on the static and dynamic characteristic of slider head in magnetic storage systems.

One of the most important factors for a proper design of a slender compression member may be the exact determination of the elastic critical load of that member. In the cases of non-prismatic compression member, however, there are times when the exact critical load becomes impossible to determinate if one relies on the neutral equilibrium method or energy principle. Here in this paper, the approximate critical loads of symmetrically or non-symmetrically tapered members are computed by finite element method. The two parameters considered in this numerical analysis are the taper parameter, $\alpha$ and the sectional property parameters, m. The computed results for each sectional property parameter, m are presented in an algebraic equation which agrees with those by F.E.M The algebraic equation can be easily used by structural engineers, who are engaged in structural analysis and design of non-prismatic compression member.

In this paper a transfer matrix method is developed to solve for bending vibration of beam with linearly reduced width, and subsequently used to determine the exact natural frequencies for such problems. The differential equation, shear force, and bending moment are derived from Hamilton's principle, and the roots of the differential equation are computed using the power series solution of the Frobenius method. The effect of various taper ratio for bending vibration of beam with linearly reduced width is investigated in detail, and to validate the accuracy of the proposed method the results computed are compared with those given from commercial software(ANSYS).

This paper deals with buckling loads of the column with the constant surface area. The shape function of variable column depth is chosen as the linear taper. The ordinary differential equation governing buckled shapes of the column is derived based on the dynamic equilibrium equation of such column subjected to an axial load. Three kinds of end constraint of hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped are considered in numerical examples. Effects of the column parameters on buckling loads are extensively discussed. Especially, section ratios of the strongest column are calculated, under which the maximum, i.e. strongest, buckling loads are achieved. Also the buckled shapes are obtained for searching the nodal points where the inner transverse supports are simply installed to increase the buckling loads.

The two eigenvalues (elastic critical load and natural frequency of lateral vibration) of sinusoidally tapered bats with simply supported ends were determined by the finite element method. For the convenience of structural engineers who are engaged in the structural design or vibration analysis of tapered beam-columns, eigenvalue coefficients were expressed by simple algebraic equations. The validity of each algebraic equation was confirmed by the value of unity for each correlation coefficient. The influence of axial thrust on the lateral vibration frequency was also investigated. For this purpose, the axial thrust was increased successively and the corresponding frequency was calculated. The approximate linear relationship between the axial thrust and the square of the frequency was confirmed lot each of the tapered members.

A header' is the device that makes uniform flow distribution in all branches from header of heat exchangers, pipe burner or chemical equipments. In this study, experimental tests have been performed in order to investigate the flow distribution characteristics in a straight header and tapered header which have 6 and 11 glass pipe branches. The experimental equipment consists of a water circulation system where the fluid velocity in each glass pipe is measured by Ar-ion LDV system. From the experiments and the theoretical equation, it could be recommended that tapered header should be determined so that its internal velocities inside the header become uniform according to taper of the header and number of attached branches for uniform flow distribution in energy systems.
A zero-load slider is composed of two outside rails which produce a lift force pushing up the slider from the disk surface and a wide reverse step region which produces a suction force attracting the slider to the disk surface. In this paper, the flying characteristics of zero-load sliders are obtained by using an optimization technique. In the pressure calculation module, the FIFD scheme is used to solve the modified Reynolds equation. The BFGS method and a line search algorithm is employed to predict the static flying attitude. To investigate the effect of the geometric- parameters of zero-load sliders on the flying characteristics, recess depth, front step width, rail width, and taper height are varied and the corresponding flying attitudes are obtained. Simulation results demonstrate that recess depth and rail width have significant influences on the flying characteristics.
