  • Image recognition has become an increasingly important topic for its wide application. It is highly challenging when facing to large-scale database with large variance. The recognition systems rely on a key component, i.e. the low-level feature or the learned mid-level feature. The recognition performance can be potentially improved if the data distribution information is exploited using a more sophisticated way, which usually a function over hidden variable, model parameter and observed data. These methods are called generative score space. In this paper, we propose a discriminative extension for the existing generative score space methods, which exploits class label when deriving score functions for image recognition task. Specifically, we first extend the regular generative models to class conditional models over both observed variable and class label. Then, we derive the mid-level feature mapping from the extended models. At last, the derived feature mapping is embedded into a discriminative classifier for image recognition. The advantages of our proposed approach are two folds. First, the resulted methods take simple and intuitive forms which are weighted versions of existing methods, benefitting from the Bayesian inference of class label. Second, the probabilistic generative modeling allows us to exploit hidden information and is well adapt to data distribution. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we cooperate our discriminative extension with three generative models for image recognition task. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

  • BLUs are major component in LCD industry which occupies 90% or more of FPD market worldwide and BLU market is expected to be expanded continuously according to the trend of miniaturization, slimness, low power consumption and low weight. The larger the BLU market scale, the more important standardization of performance evaluation techniques to clearly prescribe the product specification. Currently the government is promoting the establishment of related laws and coincidence with international standards to cope with agreements such as WTO/TBT, but the nongovernmental standardization activities are not enough to be actualized. Furthermore, BLU related components such as CCFL, EEFL, inverter and reflector are already developed for localization to substitute imports with home products but collective standardization, national standardization, and international standardization are still not done. So, performance specifications and evaluation methods for normal fluorescent lamps or industrial lamps are being adopted and used as national standards and safety certification standards instead. Making these standards enables to prepare a chance to penetrate into global market and to promote world best products. Also, by making this collective standard, it provides chances to take part in international standardization activities, to protect domestic industries and technologies, to obtain the trend of advanced technologies, and to be predominant over other countries. That is to say, CCFL standardization helps raise 21st century national strategic technology policy and go ahead of globalization of core technologies.

  • International Civil Aviation Organization(ICAO) adopted VOR(Very high frequency Omni-Range) as an international standard air navigation system in 1949 and recommended every country to make use of it in formulating air route and guiding take-off and landing of an aircraft. VOR is quite a useful navigation system so that more than 2,000 VORs have been installed all over the world including 39 in Korea: however, VOR signal could be easily affected by its circumstance like a mountainous area because it provides navigation information through AM and FM of VHF carrier. Therefore this study intends to investigate how much VOR performance is affected by its circumstances. For this purpose, the performance of the 10 VORs influenced by 24 obstacles are measured and analyzed by using an aircraft equipped with measuring instruments. This study may give us a feasible solution of problems related to the VOR siting in the future.

  • Conventionally, in a CDMA system analysis, we assume only a single path within one chip duration. But, in this paper, we assume various number of multipaths within one chip duration according to spreading bandwidth in fixed channel model. Thus we take into account of the effects of autocorrelation and relative phases among multipath components within one chip duration according to different bandwidth, and analyze fading effects. And we derive the pdf of output signal. Then, we derive the average error probability versus the number of users from derived pdf. We use a Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC) RAKE receiver under the JTC channel model which is one of the popular realistic wideband channel models. And we employ hybrid FDMA/CDMA systems to compare the performance of W-CBMA system for the same occupied total bandwidth. Then, we compare and analyze them for different bandwidth based on the number of users as a parameter. From the simulation results for different bandwidth, better performance can be obtained for wider bandwidth system where more resolvable multipath components are available.

VOR is quite a useful navigation system so that more than 2,000 VORs are currently installed all over the world including 39 in the Republic of Korea; however, VOR signal could be easily affected by its circumstance like a mountainous area because it provides navigation information to an aircraft through AM and FM of VHF carrier. There are two types of VOR which are defined according to a design methode. Therefore this study intends to investigate which type of VOR is suitable for mountainous area. For that purpose, the performance of each CVOR and DVOR is measured and analyzed by using an aircraft equipped with measuring instruments. The analyzed result will be applied and utilized in selecting the VOR type, so it could be a feasible solution of problem related to the VOR relocation due to its insufficient performance in the future.

  • This paper proposes a HAG(Hidden-Node-Aware Grouping) algorithm for IEEE 802.15.4 networks to enhance the performance by eliminating collisions resulted from the hidden node problem without adopting the RTS/CTS packet exchanges. To solve the hidden node problem, the HAG algorithm organizes nodes into disjoint transmission groups by dynamically allocating hidden nodes into separate groups which take turns in a round robin way for their transmission. For dynamic group adjustment, it periodically evaluates the presence of hidden nodes based on subordinate nodes' receipt reports. To accurately measure its behavior, this paper also builds an analytical model to estimate its throughput fluctuation over various network topologies. The mathematical model along with simulation results confirmed that the HAG technique gracefully degraded the throughput of IEEE 802.15.4 networks whereas the standard IEEE 802.15.4 networks suffer severe throughput fallout as hidden nodes become populated.

  • This research was conducted to design and develop a wired monitoring system for judging if sick or dead layers (SDL) exist in multi-tier layers battery (MLB) by machine vision, and to analyze its performance. In this study, 20 Brown Leghorn (Hi-Brown) layers aged 37 weeks old, were used as the experimental animals. The intensity of concern paid by layers on feed was over 90% during 5 minutes and 30 seconds after providing feed, and normal layers (NL) had been standing to take feed for that period. Therefore, in this study, the optimal judging time was set by this test result. The wired monitoring system developed was consisted of a driving device for carrying machine vision systems, a control program, a RS232 to RS485 convertor, an automatic positioning system, and an image capture system. An image processing algorithm was developed to find SDL in MLB by the processes of binary processing, erosion, expansion, labeling, and reckoning central coordinate of the captured images. The optimal velocity for driving unit was set up as 0.13 m/s by the test results for wired monitoring system, and the proximity switch was controlled not to be operated for 1.0 second after first image captured. The wired monitoring system developed was tested to evaluate the remote monitoring performance at lab-scale laying hen house. Results showed that its judgement success.ate on normal cage (without SDL) was 87% and that on abnormal cage (with SDL) was 90%, respectively. Therefore, it would be concluded that the wired monitoring system developed in this study was well suited to the purpose of this study.

  • Routing overlay offers an ideal methodology to improve the end-to-end communication performance by deriving a backup path for any node pair. This paper focuses on a challenging issue of selecting a proper backup path to bypass the failures on the default path with high probability for any node pair. For existing backup path selection approaches, our trace-driven evaluation results demonstrate that the backup and default paths for any node pair overlap with high probability and hence usually fail simultaneously. Consequently, such approaches fail to derive a robust backup path that can take over in the presence of failure on the default path. In this paper, we propose a three-phase RBPS approach to identify a proper and robust backup path. It utilizes the traceroute probing approach to obtain the fine-grained topology information, and systematically employs the grid quorum system and the Bloom filter to reduce the resulting communication overhead. Two criteria, delay and fault-tolerant ability on average, of the backup path are proposed to evaluate the performance of our RBPS approach. Extensive trace-driven evaluations show that the fault-tolerant ability of the backup path can be improved by about 60%, while the delay gain ratio concentrated at 14% after replacing existing approaches with ours. Consequently, our approach can derive a more robust and available backup path for any node pair than existing approaches. This is more important than finding a backup path with the lowest delay compared to the default path for any node pair.

  • ShadowCam is a high-sensitivity, high-resolution imager provided by NASA for the Danuri (KPLO) lunar mission. ShadowCam calibration shows that it is well suited for its purpose, to image permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) that occur near the lunar poles. It is 205 times as sensitive as the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) Narrow Angle Camera (NAC). The signal to noise ratio (SNR) is greater than 100 over a large part of the dynamic range, and the top of the dynamic range is high enough to accommodate most brighter PSR pixels. The optical performance is good enough to take full advantage of the 1.7 meter/pixel image scale, and calibrated images have uniform response. We describe some instrument artifacts that are amenable to future corrections, making it possible to improve performance further. Stray light control is very challenging for this mission. In many cases, ShadowCam can image shadowed areas with directly illuminated terrain in or near the field of view (FOV). We include thorough qualitative descriptions of circumstances under which lunar brightness levels far higher than the top of the dynamic range cause detector or stray light artifacts and the size and extent of the artifact signal under those circumstances.

  • This paper analyzes the relationship between two representative statistical methods for bandwidth extension (BWE): Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) and Hidden Markov Model (HMM) ones, and compares their performances. The HMM method is a memory-based system which was developed to take advantage of the inter-frame dependency of speech signals. Therefore, it could be expected to estimate better the transitional information of the original spectra from frame to frame. To verify it, a dynamic measure that is an approximation of the 1st-order derivative of spectral function over time was introduced in addition to a static measure. The comparison result shows that the two methods are similar in the static measure, while, in the dynamic measure, the HMM method outperforms explicitly the GMM one. Moreover, this difference increases in proportion to the number of states of HMM model. This indicates that the HMM method would be more appropriate at least for the 'blind BWE' problem. On the other hand, nevertheless, the GMM method could be treated as a preferable alternative of the HMM one in some applications where the static performance and algorithm complexity are critical.
