PURPOSES: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate interface performance while using various tack coat materials for asphalt overlay. METHODS : The evaluation was conducted with tracking test, permeability, and interface bond strength. Tracking test was conducted using an image processing technique, to investigate the susceptibility of the tack coat materials. BBS and pull-off test were conducted to evaluate bond strength. The permeability test was conducted to evaluate the effect of tack coat materials. RESULTS : Results reveal that the trackless tack coat material demonstrates less tracking compared to other materials. Moreover, both BBS and pull-off tests can effectively evaluate the bond strength at the interface. RSC-4 was measured less bond strength. Moreover, tack coat prevents water penetration through the surface and aids the extension of the surface life of asphalt pavement. CONCLUSIONS : Trackless tack coat demonstrated a high and consistent bond strength performance. The tack coat types demonstrate marginally different performance as function of curing times. Field applicability was tested based on visual observation. Therefore, these should be considered when trackless tack coat is slightly enhanced the pavement performance based on limited this study results. Finally, it is necessary to allow reasonable time for the tack coat to completely cure.
Bond shear strengths of recycled asphalt concrete were evaluated under different tack coat applications. Regardless of the new and old mixtures, the bond shear strengths at $30^{\circ}C$ were increased by 10-20% than those at 1$0^{\circ}C$. The bond shear strengths of recycled asphalt concrete without tack coat showed very low ones. These are the main reasons for the frequent longitudinal interface crack in the field. The effect of tack coat curing time on bond shear strengths was inferior to the tack coat construction temperature.

Tack coat is a thin layer of asphalt between the existing pavement and asphalt overlay. During construction, insufficient tack coat layering can later cause surface defects such as slippage, shoving, and rutting. This paper proposed a method for tack coat inspection improvement using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and deep learning neural network for automatic non-uniform assessment of the applied tack coat area. In this method, the drone-captured images are exploited for assessment using a combination of Mask R-CNN and Grey Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). Mask R-CNN is utilized to detect the tack coat region and segment the region of interest from the surroundings. GLCM is used to analyze the texture of the segmented region and measure the uniformity and non-uniformity of the tack coat on the existing pavements. The results of the field experiment showed both the intersection over union of Mask R-CNN and the non-uniformity measured by GLCM were promising with respect to their accuracy. The proposed method is automatic and cost-efficient, which would be of value to state Departments of Transportation for better management of their work in pavement construction and rehabilitation.
Arc blow being occurred by Electro-Magnetic force(EMF) during the electric arc welding prevents the formation of a sound weldment. In this study, the effects of arc position, groove size, tack weld and base plate on the EMF in a butt-joint welding of mild steel plate are analyzed by a computer simulation based on the finite element method. The EMF can be numerically identified to be caused by a difference of the magnetic flux-density between ahead of and behind the arc in case that the workpiece locates asymmetrically around the uc. When there exists an air gap of groove ahead of the arc in the welding direction, the similar magnetic force has been producted regardless of the arc position and the gap size. The tack weld alleviates the magnetic force to about one fourth at the finish end of the workpiece. The magnetic force can be also significantly reduced with the base plate to about one fifth at the start end of the workpiece containing a tack weld.
We investigate the lateral far-field pattern characteristics, including divergence angle change and far-field pattern analysis as output power increases, of narrow-emitter-width 850 nm GaAs/AlGaAs laser diodes (LDs). Each LD has a cavity of 1200 and 1500 ㎛ and narrow emitter width of 2.4 ㎛ for the top and 4.6 ㎛ for the bottom. The threshold currents are 35 and 40 mA, and L-I kinks appear at power levels of 326 and 403 mW, respectively. The divergence angle tends to increase due to the occurrence of first-order lateral mode and the thermal lensing effect. But with the L-I kink, the divergence angle decreases and the far-field pattern becomes asymmetric. This is due to coherent superposition between the fundamental and the first-order lateral mode. We provide detailed explanations for these observations based on high-power laser diode simulation results.
PURPOSES: The performance of tack coat, commonly used for layer interface bonding, is affected by application rate and curing time. In this study, bonding strength tests were performed according to the application rate and curing time of asphalt emulsion. Based on finding from this study, optimum application rates and curing times are proposed. METHODS: In order to investigate bonding characteristic of asphalt emulsion, tests were performed on both asphalt concrete pavement and portland concrete pavement. Also, asphalt emulsions were tested at the application rate of 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and $0.8{\ell}/m^2$ and at the curing time of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 24 hours. Pull-off test and shear bonding strength test, which commonly used for bonding strength measurement of asphalt emulsion, were adopted for this study. To assess field performance under different testing condition, asphalt emulsions were applied to in-service pavement. Throughout coefficient of determination analysis between material index properties from asphalt emulsion and mechanical response from bonding strength tests, performance correlativity was analyzed. RESULTS: Test results show that optimum application rate for asphalt overlay on asphalt concrete pavement (AOA) and asphalt overlay on concrete pavement (AOC) was $0.4{\sim}0.5{\ell}/m^2$ and $0.3{\sim}0.5{\ell}/m^2$, respectively. According to the curing time increment, tensile strength and shear strength of AOC were increased to 22~44% and 20~39%, respectively. AOA case also show strength increment in tensile strength (42%) and shear strength (9%). We tested the applicability of tack coat materials at the field sites, and our findings demonstrated that the bonding (for D and E) and rapid curing (for B, C, and D, E) performances were superior than others. Among material index properties, there was a high correlation between penetration ratio and bonding strength test result. CONCLUSIONS : Result show that interlayer bonding strength was affected by asphalt emulsion type, application rate and curing time. AOC required slightly higher application ($0.1{\ell}/m^2$) than AOA. Both AOA and AOC cases show higher strength at longer curing time. Up to 2hours of curing, rapid strength increments were observed, but strength increment ratio was decreased after 2hours of curing. From the observed correlation between penetration ratio and bonding strength, it is expected that penetration ratio can be used as one of important factors affecting bonding strength analysis.

The authors investigated anomalous nanoporous structures of aluminum oxides during the Al anodization process. We implemented two-steps anodizing process for the electrolyte of oxalic acid. As increasing DC voltages, lattice constants are proportionally increased. For the curved surface, the surface electric field was distorted so that the nanoporous pipe channel changed to a cone-type shape. We confirmed the periodicity by using the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis.

The authors investigated the anodization mechanism of aluminum in an oxalic acid solution, and the electrochemical reaction is very unique for pore formation via the dissolution process, which is very dependent on the surface geometry in nanoporous alumina templates. The cross-sectional nanochannels showed that the geometrical curvature of the initial surface can cause the branching of nanochannels to be adjusted in volume occupancy to be direct to the electric field normal to the surface. The nanoporous alumina with the crystalline $\gamma-Al_2O_3$ phase showed hexagonal ordering at a voltage of 40 V, with a nanohole distance of 102 nm from the charge density oscillation of the oxalic acid solution.
There have been many studies for heat transfer enhancement. Particularly, the study of flow in heat exchangers which have fin device has been main theme in heat transfer area. Practically, the circular tube which has internal fins is widely used for developing heat transfer rate. In this study, flow and heat transfer analysis of the circular tube with fins are investigated. The height and the number of fins are arbitrary. The flow field is assumed to be laminar. The conformal mapping is used for analytic solution of the laminar flow field. Discretization of governing equation, namely, FDM was used for numerical analysis. The velocity field, flow rate and shear stress are calculated for some numbers of fins in circular tube and for some heights of fin. Temperature fields are plotted along the tube length. It can be shown that the numerical solution agrees with the analytical solution.
