Onychomycosis is the most common disease of the nail, with a worldwide prevalence of 5.5%. It causes local pain, paresthesia, and cosmetic problems and decreases the patients' quality of life. Conventional treatments include the administration of topical and systemic agents. However, factors such as subungual hyperkeratosis and biofilm formation may affect the efficacy of these treatments. Moreover, side effects associated with systemic agents are a major concern for patients. Therefore, various novel treatments are being developed; among them, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and Nd:YAG laser are promising, and several studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of PDT and laser therapy. Here, we report the efficacy and tolerability of PDT combined with 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser therapy and topical efinaconazole for the treatment of three patients with refractory onychomycosis.
The immnunogenicity of the possible non-essential component of the combined vaccine (KGCC-957) for the prophylaxis against Japanese encephalitis and Hantaan virus infection recently developed by Korea Green Cross Corporation was investigated using the Hartley guinea pigs. The KGCC-95Vl was administered to the guinea pigs subcutaneously to sensitize the animals. The guinea pigs did not induce any anaphylactic immune responses which could be detectable by the active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA), the passive systemic anaphylaxis (PSA), and the passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) tests. The KGCC-95Vl is considered not to induce any anaphylactic immune responses except the prophylatic immune effects of the vaccine.
IL-33 is a multifunctional cytokine that is released in response to a variety of intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli. The role of IL-33 in Candida albicans infections is just beginning to be revealed. This cytokine has beneficial effects on host defense against systemic C. albicans infections, and it promotes resistance mechanisms by which the immune system eliminates the invading fungal pathogens; and it also elevates host tolerance by reducing the inflammatory response and thereby, potentially, tissue damage. Thus, IL-33 is classified as a cytokine that has evolved functionally to protect the host from damage by pathogens and immunopathology.

Rendering the brain ischemic would evoke the cerebral ischemic reflex which is characterized by an arterial pressor response, apnea and bradycardia. Since the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) is known to play a key role in the maintenance of normal cardiopulmonary activity, during the cerebral ischemic reflex some cardiac related cells should be excited and respiration related cells inhibited. In this context, the responses of RVLM neurons to systemie and focal hypoxia were analyzed in the present study. Twenty-five adult cats of either sex were anesthetized with ${\alpha}-chloralose$ and the single neuronal activities were identified from RVLM area. For the induction of focal hypoxia in the recording site, sodium cyanide was applied iontophoretically and for systemic hypoxia the animal was ventilated with nitrogen gas for a twenty-second period. Cellular activities were analyzed in terms of their discharge pattern and responses to the hypoxia by using post-stimulus time and single-pass time histograms. Of eighteen cardiac related cells recorded from the RVLM area, twelve cells were excited by iontophoresed sodium cyanide and of twenty-five respiration related cells, fourteen cells were excited by iontophoresed sodium cyanide. Remaining cells were either inhibited or unaffected. Eight of fifteen cells tested with iontophoresed sodium lactate were excited and remaining seven cells were inhibited. Systemic hypoxia induced by nitrogen gas inhalation elevated the arterial blood pressure, but excited, inhibited or unaffected the single neuronal activities. Some cells showed initial excitation followed by inhibition during the systemic hypoxia. Bilateral vagotomy resulted in a decrease of arterial pressor response to the systemic hypoxia, and a slight decrease in the rhythmicity related to cardiac and/or respiratory rhythms. The single neuronal responses to either systemic or focal hypoxia were not affected qualitatively by vagotomy. From the above results, it was concluded that the majority of the cardiac- and respiration- related neurons in the rostral ventrolateral medulla be excited by hypoxia, not through the mediation of peripheral chemoreceptors, and along with the remaining inhibited cells, all these cells be involved in the mediation of cerebral ischemic reflex.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify the clinical effect, assessment, method, and recent trend of the programs by systematically reviewed community-based programs for the elderly's quality of life conducted in the last ten years, and to present comprehensive basic data for occupational therapists who want to apply community-based programs improving quality of life. Methods : This study identified 811 studies from among those registered in the RISS, KISS, DBpia, NDSL, and KCI databases from January to September 2020, using "elderly," "community elderly," "65 aged," "quality of life," "occupational therapy," "occupational therapy program," "intervention," and "intervention program" as keywords. From these results, 11 documents were selected. Results : It was found that studies of occupational therapy programs for the quality of life of the elderly have been continuously conducted since 2010, and most of them were non-random control studies. The quality of life evaluation tool used most frequently was SF-36, and WHOQOL-BREF and SF-8 were also used. The selected programs were classified as were exercise programs and complex programs. For most of the exercise programs, interventions were carried out for 12 weeks, three times a week for 30~60 minutes. In the case of the complex programs, the duration of interventions was nine weeks, and the frequency and time per session varied. All of the exercise programs showed significant effects. Among the complex programs, two studies showed significant effects, but the remaining one study did not. Conclusion : Through this study, the types and effects of occupational therapy programs for the quality of life of the elderly were examined. Hereafter, studies of the development and to verify the effects of these programs should be actively carried out.
Phytobiotics, also known as phytochemicals or phytogenics, have a wide variety of biological activities and have recently emerged as alternatives to synthetic antibiotic growth promoters. Numerous studies have reported the growth-promoting effects of phytobiotics in chickens, but their precise mechanism of action is yet to be elucidated. Phytobiotics are traditionally known for their antioxidant activity. However, extensive investigations have shown that these compounds also have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and transcription-modulating effects. Phytobiotics are non-nutritive constituents, and their bioavailability is low. Nonetheless, their beneficial effects have been observed in several tissues or organs. The health benefits of the ingestion of phytobiotics are attributed to their antioxidant activity. However, several studies have revealed that not all these benefits could be explained by the antioxidant effects alone. In this review, I focused on the bioavailability of phytobiotics and the possible mechanisms underlying their overall effects on intestinal barrier functions, inflammatory status, gut microbiota, systemic inflammation, and metabolism, rather than the specific effects of each compound. I also discuss the possible mechanisms by which phytobiotics contribute to growth promotion in chickens.

Background: Cardiopulmonary bypass is an essential process to maintain circulation for saving life during the cardiac surgery, But it is a process in which systemic inflammation was evoked inevitably because of the exposure of blood to foreign surface. The injuries to distal organs during the cardiopulmonary bypass were resulted from systemic inflammation and the disturbances of micro-circulations in the organs. We designed this study to research the effects of leukocyte depletion from pump-oxygenator priming solution on the systemic inflammation, and the micro-circulation of gastric mucosa that is suggested by the gastric mucosal $CO_{2}$ partial pressure and acidity. Material and Method: The dogs were divided into three groups according to the different pump-oxygenator priming solutions; non-hemic crystalloid solution; leukocyte-depleted homologous blood; and non leukocyte-depleted homo-logous blood. Each priming solution group contained five dogs. In all three groups, 2 hours of cardiopulmonary bypass, and 4 consecutive hours of general anesthesia was maintained on the mechanical ventilation. Each dog was evaluated for the gastric mucosal pH, $CO_{2}$ partial Pressure, arterial pH, $CO_{2}$ partial pressure, the exhaled air $CO_{2}$ partial pressure and the level of IL-8 on before the cardiopulmonary bypass, 1 hour after the cardiopulmonary bypass, 2 hours after the cardiopulmonary bypass, 2 hours after the restoration of normal circulation, and 4 hours after the restoration of normal circulation after the cardiopulmonary bypass. The levels of IL-8 were measured with ELISA (enzyme linked immunosorbent assay) technique. Result: 1. There were significant differences of gastric mucosal $CO_{2}$ partial pressure between the leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group and other two groups(vs non leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group; P=0.02, vs non-hemic crystalloid solution group; P=0,01). 2. The gastric mucosal pH of leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group was significantly different from non leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group (p=0.01). 3. The levels of IL-8, which examine the systemic inflammation, showed signi- ficantly better results in leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group and non-hemic crystalloid solution group than non leukocyte-depleted homologous blood group (p=0.01, 0.01). Conclusion: Based upon these results, we concluded that the leukocyte depletion from the pump-oxygenator priming solution has a beneficial effects in reducing systemic inflammation and the preserving of gastric mucosal micro-circulation.
Residual toxicity test to honeybee was conducted to evaluate an indirect effects on honeybee after planting hole application of systemic insecticides which were highly toxic to honeybee (Apis mellifera). In this study, It was applied three application rates in the planting hole by three systemic insecticides, dinotefuran GR, imidacloprid GR and clothianidin GR at planting time of tomato. Residual analysis of foliage was carried out after periodic sampling the foliage and investigated the effects of exposed honeybee on the tomato foliage. The honeybee mortality by dinotefuran residues on the foliage was shown almost 100% at 7 days after treatment and decreased 17 days after treatment. The maximum mortality of honeybee by imidacloprid residues on the foliage was 44 ~ 72%. But the effect of pesticide lasted for 18 days and then decreased. The honeybee mortality by clothianidin residues on the foliage was 100% at 7 days after treatment and decreased 14 days after treatment. A tendency of the honeybee mortality and residue in foliage showed a similar character as time goes by. The residues in tomato foliage decreased gradually after 14 days by vigorous growth of tomatoes and the toxic effect of honeybee was significantly decreased after 21 days in actual usage of the treatment.

Xerostomia is subjective feeling of dry mouth, a symptom that may or may not be accompanied by hyposalivation, an objective decrease in salivary flow. There are many causes induced xerostomia like drugs, salivary gland diseases, radiation therapy to the head and neck region, Sjogren syndrome, emotional stress etc. Insufficient salivary flow creates complications with oral candidiasis, dental caries, periodontitis, halitosis, dysgeusia. So finally, these complications lead to an overall decline in quality of life. Managements of xerostomia are eliminating or alterating the etiologic factors, relieving symptoms, preventing or correcting the consequences of salivary dysfunction, treating underlying disease and stimulating salivation. One of the salivation stimulation agents studied to treat xerostomia was the pilocarpine muscarinic agonist. Pilocarpine is one of salivation stimulants, a parasympathomimetic drug and non-selective muscarinic receptor agonist. Systemic pilocarpine has been used to stimulate salivary secretion. But systemic administration of pilocarpine has limitations such as increased risk of side effects and contraindications. Side effects of systemic pilocarpine administration are sweating, urinary and gastrointestinal disturbance, risk of cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders. This drug must be used carefully by patients with controlled asthma, chronic bronchitis, pulmonary or cardiac disease. Patient with acute asthma, narrow angle glaucoma, iritis should not use pilocarpine. Like this, systemic pilocarpine has many limitations. So, many investigators also have looked at the effectiveness of topical pilocarpine. Here we present patients with xerostomia which was relieved by pilocarpine mouthwash.
In previous reports, the treatment of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain EXTN-1 showed a broad diseasecontrolling spectrum to the plant diseases caused by viral, bacterial, and fungal pathogens as well as the promotion of plant growth. In mechanisms of EXTN-1, treatment of EXTN-1 increased oxidative burst in early stage and induced the expression of resistance genes, PR-1a, PDF1.2. Mechanism involved in induced systemic resistance by EXTN-1 was revealed as simultaneous activation of SA and JA or ethylene metabolic pathways. The purpose of this study was to determine whether B. amyloliquefaciens EXTN-1 has a similar effect on rice plant against Rice stripe tenuivirus (RSV) under greenhouse conditions. When rice seeds were soaked in B. amyloliquefaciens strain EXTN-1, rice plants showed significant systemic resistance against RSV as well as promoted growth. In the case of plant growth, in 30-day old plants treated with B. amyloliquefaciens EXTN-1, the heights, weights, and lengths of roots increased by 12.6%, 9.8%, and 16.0%, respectively confirming the effects of PGPR. When the induced systemic resistance to RSV was examined, in 20-day old plants were treated with B. amyloliquefaciens EXTN-1, the heights, weights, and lengths of roots increased by 8.4%, 10.9%, and 4.8%, respectively compared to the control. Induced systemic resistance was more prominent in susceptible cultivars - Chucheong and Ilpum compared to the resistant cultivar, Nakdong.
