  • A quantitative relationship between Leidenfrost point and surface characteristics such as surface material and roughness is investigated. Based on the relationship, we have fabricated the surfaces with their Leidenfrost points (LFP) tuned by controlling surface coating and structures. As discovered by Leidenfrost, liquids placed on a hot plate levitate on the gas phase-air gap formed by the vaporization of liquids. This phenomenon is called 'Leidenfrost effect'. A change of LFP has attracted many researchers for several years but the ability to tune LFP is still a remaining issue. Many of previous work has progressed for various conditions so the systematic approach and analysis are needed to clearly correlate the LFP and the surface conditions. In this report, we investigate a relation of surface energy and LFP using various coating materials such as Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane (FOTS). Also, we analyze how surface roughness affects LFP via surface micro structuring with ICP-RIE fabrication process. The improved understanding can have potential applications such as the control of liquid droplet behavior at elevated temperatures for efficient cooling system.

  • Purpose: Hope has been identified as a protective factor that contributes to achieving a better quality to life, especially in patients with chronic disease. The purpose of this review was to synthesize current knowledge about the relationship between hope and quality of life among adolescents living with chronic illnesses. Methods: We searched major English-language databases (PsycINFO, PubMed, and CINAHL) for studies from January 1, 2002 to July 12, 2019. Studies were included if they provided data on hope and its relationship with quality of life among adolescents with chronic diseases. Results: In total, five articles were selected from the 336 studies that were retrieved. All five studies reported a positive correlation between hope and quality of life, such that people with a higher level of hope had a better quality of life. Hope was found to have direct and indirect effects on quality of life in adolescents with chronic diseases. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals should make more efforts to enhance hope in adolescents with chronic diseases in order to improve their quality of life. Future studies exploring how hope develops in adolescents with chronic diseases and the long-term impact of hope on quality of life are necessary.

  • As business environment has become more competitive, the R&D strategies of firms have been regarded more important. Patent has information about technology which affects a firm's profit and it is considered as resources which have provided appropriate data for research of innovations and trends in technology. And patent indicators are known as qualitative representation of technology quality in an objective view. Also, they are available for the continuous and systematic analysis. However, most previous studies have focused on developing patent indicators to investigate patent value and characteristics. Furthermore they have limitations that most results is not significant that patent indicators have effect on firm performance-Tobin's q, Intangible assets based on balance sheet, sales and etc. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to propose proper a factor to represent a firm performance and to analyze causal relationship between patent indicators and firm performance. Intangible assets based on market value are employed as one of most significant firm performance indicator. The results indicate that intangible assets are appropriate for analyzing causal relation between patent and a firm performance with 7 significant indicators among 10 patent indicators. Considering firm's exogenous factors, regression analysis of each data for five years is performed. This result is similar to regression analysis of full data for all years.

  • Though many researchers have interested in the effects of creativity management on the business performance, few have researched the relationship between management execution systems for creativity management and the performance. This paper tried to identify the relationship between management execution systems for creativity management and the performance by using 181 Korean companies' survey data. In this paper, a creative management execution system is modelled by the six criteria that are widely used in the Malcolmn Baldrige National Quality Award, and the performance is measured by a composite variable called by business capability. Through an analysis of survey data using factor analysis and regression analysis, this paper tried to answer two research questions: Firstly, does creative management execution systems have the characteristics of multi-dimensionality? Secondly, does creative management execution systems have an impact on the firm's performance? It was found that a creative management execution system largely consists of two parts, which are called 'system factor' and 'management support factor', and system factors have a more strong impact on the performance. The contribution of this paper is in suggesting that establishing a systematic creative management execution system is required in order to efficiently manage for creativity.

  • The larvae of Chaoborus are widely distributed in lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. These omnivorous Chaoborus larvae are crucial predators and play a role in structuring zooplankton communities, especially for small-sized prey. Larvae of Chaoborus are commonly known to produce predator-induced polyphenism in Daphnia sp. Nevertheless, their taxonomy and molecular phylogeny are very poorly understood. As a fundamental study for understanding the role of Chaoborus in predator-prey interactions in a freshwater ecosystem, the molecular identification and phylogenetic relationship of Chaoborus were analyzed in this study. A molecular comparison based on partial mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) between species in Chaoborus was carried out for the identification of Chaoborus larvae collected from 2 localities in Korea. According to the results, the Chaoborus species examined here was identified as C. flavicans, which is a lake-dwelling species. Furthermore, partial mitochondrial genome including COI, COII, ATP6, ATP8, COIII, and ND3 were also newly sequenced from the species and concatenated 5 gene sequences excluding ATP8 with another 9 dipteran species were compared to examine phylogenetic relationships of C. flavicans. The results suggested that Chaoborus was more related to the Ceratopogonidae than to the Culicidae. Further analysis based on complete mitochondrial DNA sequences and nuclear gene sequences will provide a more robust validation of the phylogenetic relationships of Chaoborus within dipteran lineages.

  • Introgression from genetically modified plants (GMPs) may be dependent on the genetic similarity to wild relative plants. In Korea, many wild plant species are botanically related to the cultivated plants that have a potential to be genetically transformed. The controversy for hazards of GMPs is continuing because the studies on gene flow or introgression are little. Based on the systematic criteria, we have surveyed Korean wild plant species that showed the similarity to cultivating crops. The consideration for feasibility of genetic pollution (introgression of transgene) is necessary for the successful accomplishment in the practical use of GMPs. Although the detrimental effects of GMPs on wild relatives have not been clearly verified, Korean wild plant species related to crop plant (potential GMP) have to be investigated with respect to the introgression. Korean flora consists of ca. 5,500 species. Among them, 1,448 species are classified as weed species (966 native, 325 naturalized, and 167 escaped ones), which is vulnerable to GMPs in term of introgression. We suggested the principal Korean wild plants related to major crops that might be affected by GMPs via introgression. The investigated species herein are selected based on the morphological and phenological relationship. It is necessary to verify the genetic relationship between cultivated plants and wild relatives sing more precise molecular techniques, which provide the information of likelihood for the introgression of transgene.

  • With the development of cognitive science and environmental psychology, there have been growing researches and discussions on the relationship between the residential design preferences and personality types. MBTI personality types have been earning popular credibility. MBTI means Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. It is based on Carl Jung's theory of psychological type. This study is based on Myers-Briggs theory to explain residential furnishing preference and explores the relationship between the four bi-polar personality types-Extroversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Perceiving and residential furnishing preference. These tests were conducted to two hundred and twelve adult residents who live in Seoul, Korea. These tests were analyzed several significances by Chi-Square with SPSS for windows software. (E) Extroverted residents prefer layouts for interaction with guests. (I) Introverted residents prefer centripetal layout around the bed. (S) Sensing residents prefer practical and functional layouts. (N) Intuitive residents prefer personal and conceiving layouts. (T) Thinking residents prefer for attribute of space. (F) Feeling residents for familiar conversation. (J) Judging residents prefer systematic and complete layouts. (P) Perceiving residents prefer adaptable and flexible layouts. In conclusion, personality types can have a determining role in preference of residential furnishing layouts. This study suggests that residential designers should take into account clients' personality types prefer effective designing and should provide a variety of alternatives reflecting clients' preferences. This will promote clients' pleasantness and satisfaction in dwelling at home.
