  • The structural system of domestic high-rise apartments can be divided into two parts; the core wall system, which is composed of walls concentrated in the center and the shear wall system, which comprises a great number of walls distributed in the plan. In order to analyze the lateral behavior of each system, buildings with typical domestic high-rise apartment plans were selected and nonlinear static analysis was performed to investigate the their collapse mechanism. From the force-displacement relation derived from nonlinear static analysis, response modification factor was evaluated by calculating the overstrengh and ductility factor, which are important in the seismic response. The ductility of core wall system is small, but as it is governed by wind load, its overstrength is greatly estimated, and its response modification factor is calculated by the overstrengh factor. Due to a large number of walls, shear wall system has a large ductility, making the response modification factor considerably large.

  • This study is to prepare the emergency response procedures for an unmanned LRT (Light Rapid Transit) which is being commercially operated recently. This emergency response procedure adds several particular characteristics which happens in the hardware and software aspects at the unmanned LRT in addition to the present emergency response procedures. The emergency response procedure has to conform to the emergency response planning. For doing that this emergency response procedure includes three important sub systems. First of all, the functional emergency response system has been developed. Secondly, Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) is suggested for the better and faster emergency response between emergency response personnel and institutes. Thirdly, emergency response training and drilling system is also provided for emergency response personnel. Finally, a software program for emergency response training and drilling will be developed and suggested to be used for the emergency response personnel.

  • Output response for prototype system is analyzed according to the pole locations and the damping ratio changes. The system modeling is constructed for RLC-circuit and the output response is analyzed for both a unit-step and a sinusoidal input. The survey is conducted to estimate the understanding ability on the automatic control. A high understanding ability is shown up in analysing the transfer functions of control system. And improvement is manifest in the ability to understand the output response according to the parameter changes. But some difficulty is revealed in acquiring the output responses in time domain.

  • Dynamic pressure transducer needs to be flush-mounted on hardware due to frequency response characteristics of pressure transmission system. However, it is sometimes necessary to be mounted in recessed configuration due to insufficient space for sensor installation and for protection of sensor from thermal damage. Dynamic response characteristics should be considered due to distortion of original dynamic pressure signal in the pressure transmission system. In this study, small perturbation model and 2nd order reduced model were compared with experiments and a guideline for selecting a frequency response model was suggested.

  • System algorithms estimated by deterministic input may occur the error between predicted and actual output. Especially, actual system can't predict the exact outputs due to uncertainty and tolernce of input parameters. A single output to a set of inputs has a limited value without the variation. Hence, we should consider various scatters caused by the load assessment, material characteristics, stress analysis and manufacturing methods in order to perform the robust design or etimate the reliability of structure. The system design with uncertainty should perform the probabilistic structural optimization with the statistical response and the reliability. This method calculated the probability distributions of the characteristics such as stress by combining stress analysis, response surface methodology and Monte Carlo simulation and got the probabilistic sensitivity. The sensitivity of structural response with respect to in constant design variables was estimated by fracture probability. Therefore, this paper proposed the probabilistic reliability design method for fracture of uncorved freight end beam and the design criteria by fracture probability.

  • The effects of large rotations and p-delta on the dynamic response of a structure subjected to seismic loading and local uplift of its foundation were analyzed in this work. The structure was modeled by an equivalent flexible mat mounted on a rigid foundation that is supported either by a Winkler soil type or a rigid soil. The equations of motion of the system were derived by taking into account the equilibrium of the coupled foundation-mat system where the structure was idealized as a single-degree-of-freedom. The obtained nonlinear coupled system of ordinary differential equations was integrated by using an adequate numerical scheme. A parametric study was performed then in order to evaluate the maximum response of the system as function of the intensity of the earthquake, the slenderness of the structure, the ratio of the mass of the foundation to the mass of the structure. Three cases were considered: (i) local uplift of foundation under large rotation with the p-delta effect, (ii) local uplift of foundation under large rotation without including the p-delta effect, (iii) local uplift of foundation under small rotation. It was found that, in the considered ranges of parameters and for moderate earthquakes, assuming small rotation of foundation under seismic loading can yield more adverse structural response, while the p-delta effect has almost no effect.

  • Since Daegu subway arson fire disaster in 2003, there have been several copycat crimes such as at Seoul Metro line number seven and Hongkong Chuiwan line cases. Oil and gas were used for fire propagation in most cases as in Daegu case and such fire could be expanded to a whole subway cabin within several minutes. The fire may eventually cause the whole subway system stop. Fire damage can be minimized when fire occurrence and diffusion are blocked by stages or isolated rapidly. This study suggests an effective early response system that separates passengers from fire and a real-time fire extinguishment program by stages. Based on the subway arson case studies, the early response scenario has been structured by three stages, i.e., confirmation of fire and damage, early fire extinguishment, and information dissemination and passengers evacuation.

  • This paper calculates the effective capacity of EES providing the primary frequency control service based on its contribution to the frequency response of the power system. The amount of governor response from conventional generators which can be replaced by the primary frequency control from EES keeping the frequency response of the power system is defined as the effective capacity. The proposed method for calculating the effective capacity of EES is verified through case studies employing Korean power system. Furthermore, the application of the effective capacity of EES to power system operation is also discussed.

  • Colors reproduced by color imaging system are affected by various physical factors. The spectral response of the color image sensor is one of the important factors. We developed a spectral response characteristics measurement system which is composed of optical part and color analyzing part. The data from the optical part was analyzed by the color analyzing part and spectral response characteristics of R, G, B three color sensors were obtained. Using this system, the spectral response characteristics of a CCD color camera was measured. From this result, color rendition and linearity of the camera could be analyzed. This measurement system is $.$considered to be very useful for the evaluation of color image sensor characteristics. stics.
